Should this be allowed
Brian Peters has announced today that half the bouts on the Dunne -V- Cordoba card are AMATUER bouts , one is Kenny Egan and the other one is Katie Taylor a World womens champ. The tickets aren't that cheap infact I spent €65 for my ticket and half the fights are amatuers. Are people getting screwed in this case by Brian Peters

The Box Office will dictate if anyone feels they are being screwed.
So, if they are amateurs, who is getting all the money? I assume the amateurs are fighting for free?
Re: Should this be allowed
I've never heard of amateur-pro shows together, but I can't see why it would be illegal.
Katie Taylor is a top class amateur, so she will be a draw.
Actually, I'd welcome it. I'd rather see some top class well matched amateur bouts on an undercard than just a series of professional prospects v journeymen bouts.

I'm sure in Holland, Belgium, Denmark (Freiheit might confirm this one) to name but a few that came to my head that they mix amateur and pro shows.

Brian I think this is one of the best things that's happened here. Kenny Egan is going to get a crack at that Chinese lad how he lost unfairly to in the Olympics , were going to get to see Taylor on our screens instead of just clips and seeing her with medals. Brian peters has done a great thing here imo. This is a showcase of our most successful sport , there is going to be some great talent on show. I thought you would be delighted to see this happen.
Re: Should this be allowed
Its a great idea, about time. Its the way forward.
Re: Should this be allowed
Sanigar put a pro-am show on in St Davids Hall in Cardiff last year. Infact similar, I think it had 4 amateur bouts, 4 pro bouts (well not sure of the number but it was 50:50).
Its not illegal.

Agree.
And how will you know? To be honest i don't know any amateur boxers outside of the top few.
Re: Should this be allowed
I go to amateur shows all the time. They will be well matched. There are no journeymen in the amateurs, all these guys are looking for the win.Old bones Ian wrote:

And how will you know?
The amateur boxing officials that I know in Scotland match on age, experience and weight. If it looks one sided on paper, it won't usually happen without a lot of discussion between the officials and the two coaches and, lets face it, what good amateur coach would send their boxer in to a sure defeat.
I hope that a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised.

Most of the time am's are well matched, but i wouldn't be surprised to see that the chinese lad not quite be up to the same standard as he was in the olympics.
I thought Egan won that anyway.

Its a cracking idea - gives amateur fighters exposure - and the punters evenly matched fights.
I think eventually we will see the death of amateurism in boxing - after all, it doesn't really exist in many other sports. It will be more a case of juniors becoming seniors.

Re: Should this be allowed
There was a couple of very successful pro-am shows in Brum last year.
Re: Should this be allowed
This was quite an entertaining night. If I remember right Stu you are corrent of was four of each.stujones wrote:Sanigar put a pro-am show on in St Davids Hall in Cardiff last year. Infact similar, I think it had 4 amateur bouts, 4 pro bouts (well not sure of the number but it was 50:50).

The atmosphere was good with all the support for the AM's and the Pro's
Pity Sanigar hasn't done much since...... He's gone pretty quiet
Re: Should this be allowed
It will give FW ideas, giving good prospects generous 'expenses' to fight, easing them into the pro game, and on the othr hand will be putting bill on for little money.
I can see these bills being PPV and replacing top of the bill fights when high profile boxers mysteriously drop out last minute!

It was, a great venue... well I love the Hall. Shame it wasn't publicised more, I thought it was a bit empty - but yes it was good. That poor guy who brought half of the crowd ended up losing to a journeyman, he must have felt bad.GazMan85 wrote:This was quite an entertaining night. He was going to do it... before sealing Khan's signature - can't you remember the promises. When Khan hummed about going to China.Coco wrote:It will give FW ideas, giving good prospects generous 'expenses' to fight, easing them into the pro game, and on the othr hand will be putting bill on for little money.

Rob Turley was the guy who lost. He always bring a big crowd to Newport Centre when he fights there. Do you go to the bouts at Newport Centre Stu?stujones wrote:It was, a great venue... well I love the Hall. Shame it wasn't publicised more, I thought it was a bit empty - but yes it was good. Re: Should this be allowed
Surely what could be done, is that promoters pay the amateur club that the fighters come from - the clubs get paid, and pass on some to the fighters as expenses or an 'appearance fee' - the promoters then get first refusal (or exclusive contract with particular clubs - dangerous waters, but just thinking off the top of my head on signing their fighters.
Amateur boxing clubs always are looking for funding - this would surely provide a framework which benefitted them, and promoters in that they get new talent for their shows - and can cut a deal with particular clubs perhaps.
The long talked about merger between professional and amateur codes seems long overdue - does anyone know what happened to this? allegedly seemed keen initially, but nothing seems to have been said about it in quite some time.

What do you mean by "amateurism?" Do you mean the fact that amateurs follow different rules to the professionals?jamesmcdonnell wrote:

After all, almost every sport in the world that is done professionally is also done by amateurs, although usually the rules are the same.

It'll be all Hunky Dory on the night!
Re: Should this be allowed
I can't think of a sport that DOESN'T have a lot of amateur participants. That said, a lot of them will never perform in front of a paying crowd, although a lot do.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I mean Corinthian spirit - competing for free.
I've paid to see amateur football, showjumping and athletics in the past.
