Re: Khan Barrera conference audio
if khan wins will it change the mind of the boxrec doubters ? or does he still have to beat Murray/Thaxton
Re: Khan Barrera conference audio
Good point... alot of people seem to be going for Khan - I wonder if it will be "I told you Barrera is past it, Khan is still shit".sweetscience wrote:if khan wins will it change the mind of the boxrec doubters ? or does he still have to beat Murray/Thaxton
This is a guy, who might be overweight and past it - but has forgot more than most fighters will ever learn.
I think its a tough fight to call, cause I geniunally believe offensively Khan is as good as anyway at the weight - well not Manny, JMM or Casamayor, but any of the other champions. Defensively, he is not.
However, Barrera could very well be added to the list - just don't think you can judge him based on these two glorified sparring sessions he has had. Question is, can Khan take the punches - cause I feel he will be needing to take them.
Such a tough fight to call. Certainly, if this was Murray vs Barrera I would be extremely confident that Marco would tear him apart.

How many more times do I have to state it - Khan will win the fight - he will stop MAb and then the b*llocks will start.sweetscience wrote:if khan wins will it change the mind of the boxrec doubters ? or does he still have to beat Murray/Thaxton
I do not understand whatsoever why MAB has chosen to take the fight unless absolutely ludicrous money is on offer!!!

Khan should win, ut remember Prescott looked lke shit in the videos we saw of him pre-khan.
Barreramight re-discover something and then its NIGHT Khan!
Either way - as someone said, Khan will most likely win a (vacant) title one day but he will lose ( get knocked out )a few times also.
Too fragile.

Both Don King and allegedly are stuttering a bit through this, getting things wrong etc. At one point, does Don call him Frank Maloney? Barrera seems to think everyone in the UK lives in London, and at one point Warren says "If I was a guy!"
Still, I love Kings style.

Re: Khan Barrera conference audio
How much sparring can Barrera do, or will he do, with the cut eye?
At his age he needs to stay sharp.
Did anyone see his last two fights? How did he look?
My thoughts, without answers to the above, are Khan on points or Barrera by late KO.
Is it 10 or 12 rounds?

Re: Khan Barrera conference audio
I have a question... when Calzaghe vs Jones was announced - I, who haven't particularly rated Joe as highly as some, said Jones is shot to pieces Calzaghe easy and I got accused (more so on another site, a Welsh Rugby one) of making a "nothing to lose" pick. Had Joe lost, I could have said "well got it wrong, but I was right in the long run" - had Joe won I could have said "well, I was right - Jones was past it, Calzaghe still shit". That wasn't why I thought that, but could see why some posters might think that.Spud wrote:

Just wondering, if this is part of reasoning with your pick? Cause I cannot understand why you think the "bollocks" will start. Barrera IS a class act. The Bollocks I see happening is people still think Khan isn't proven at domestic level and still, as Sweet Science suggests, think Murray and Thaxton are a test. Yes they will be, of sorts, but come on - this is an acid test and people should accept Khan has at least some world class attributes if he can beat him.
Cause he hasn't faced all the domestic names, and not fought for the British title, I believe Khan gets unfairly treated a tad by us "geeks". The guy has beaten a recent world champion, the man who beat an undefeated European champion, and a guy who drew with another former world champion.
Khan will deserve some of the bollocks if he wins, cause he would have beaten a guy who was around the top ten P4P 12 months ago, and is ranked in the top 10 in alot of independent rankings (as a Lightweight). When has Thaxton/Murray ever come close to doing that?
Sure, if Warren calls him the second coming of Christ or Muhammad Ali - then yes, that will be bollocks cause this isn't the old MAB - but if all Warren says is that he is now ready for a title fight... well I don't think that is too far fetched - Barrera was going to get one fighting these tune ups, and he still wouldn't look out of his place.
Alot will depend on what happens on the night, I am sure whatever happens the critics will have their knives ready. Comprehensively out boxes MAB - it will be Khan cannot punch, Chins Barrera in one - it will be Barrera cannot take a shot a lightweight. Something in between - it will be slow old Barrera can catch him - Thaxton will knock him out.

Re: Khan Barrera conference audio
If this was a fight between two proven lightweights of similar age then fair enough, but it has a familiar ring to it - As most of the other Khan fights do, apart from one in particular, and well all know what happened there.
As usual more questions will be asked than answered, and thats typical of Amir Khan's career to date - And that is because of the relucatnace to fight people who are live, and the same weight.
Barrera fits the bill perfectly, although with his pedigree I just hope he has enough about him at this late stage of his career and at this weight to make it competitive.
My feeling is we are in for a Hoya/Manny type of fight.

Reminds me of the last time I went India - A local noticed I was speaking english and asked where I was from. I repliedwhicker wrote:Barrera seems to think everyone in the UK lives in London
"England" and he didn't have a clue what I was on about. I then said "London" to which he said "Ah! London!"

Re: Khan Barrera conference audio
I think Barrera will be a stiffer test than DLH was for Pacquiao. Barrera is moving up after all whilst DLH was obviously drained by coming in at 145lbs. Always a bad idea for fighters to drop down a division at the end of their careers - see Chris Byrd also.Twinkle Toes wrote:If this was a fight between two proven lightweights of similar age then fair enough, but it has a familiar ring to it - As most of the other Khan fights do, apart from one in particular, and well all know what happened there.

I'm sure Barrera and his doctor will insist his eye will be just fine - Barrera, because he will see himself landing fast and cracking that china chin early, and his doctor because he's paid well, and does exactly what he's told.
But do we really believe than a cut eye that needs stitches is going to be A-OK in 4 weeks?

No but he is a 35 year old ex-super bantamweight - I cant ignore that fact, and neither should you.
Are you saying Barrera is a live fighter and is favoured to beat Khan?

Its a close one. OK, he hasn't always been a lightweight and his is getting on a bit, but he can certainly punch, and has a massive ammount of world class experience.
Its not a World Title Fight (IE it's not being billed as boxing at the very highest level,) its a clash of old master V prospect, and it will be an interesting one to watch.

so its ex Super bantam v's Ex Light Fly
Re: Khan Barrera conference audio
Well the bookies are struggling to split them. Yes I think Barrera is "live"... well depends on the definition I guess. No I don't think he is the fighter he was, but he is still damn good and would mix it with the likes of Campbell etc.Twinkle Toes wrote:No but he is a 35 year old ex-super bantamweight - I cant ignore that fact, and neither should you.

If this was a prime Barrera, ex super bantam or not - I wouldn't give Khan any chance.
Lets not forget, alot of the main contenders out there are past it Super Feathers - Campbell, Chavez, Casamayor etc.
Funny it seems to be the Khan critics are not giving Barrera much hope, and the Khan fans saying its going to be tough.

The last weight Barrera was competitive at World class level was 5 lbs south of Lightweight.
Re: Khan Barrera conference audio
Well thats primarily because he hasn't fought anyone at world class there.
We could have said that prior to Pacquiao vs Diaz then. Barrera would stand a decent shout against Campbell. Might not be favourite, but would surely be competitive.

Unless you have some inside knowledge that Barrera has lost an arm in a threshing machine - I fail to see how anyone could be quite so bright and optimistic about Khan winning.
This is Khan remember, the guy who was floored by Gomez and Limond, annihilated by Prescott - and this is Barrera, who is a legendary hall of famer lock-in.
