This is not a world class level fight.
I didn't say it is. ;;-)
Yeah, I know what you are saying.

Thing is, even if MAB isn't a world class lightweight, this does not mean he won't be too good for Khan.

I have a question... when Calzaghe vs Jones was announced - I, who haven't particularly rated Joe as highly as some, said Jones is shot to pieces Calzaghe easy and I got accused (more so on another site, a Welsh Rugby one) of making a "nothing to lose" pick. Had Joe lost, I could have said "well got it wrong, but I was right in the long run" - had Joe won I could have said "well, I was right - Jones was past it, Calzaghe still shit". That wasn't why I thought that, but could see why some posters might think that.

Just wondering, if this is part of reasoning with your pick? Cause I cannot understand why you think the "bollocks" will start. Barrera IS a class act. The Bollocks I see happening is people still think Khan isn't proven at domestic level and still, as Sweet Science suggests, think Murray and Thaxton are a test. Yes they will be, of sorts, but come on - this is an acid test and people should accept Khan has at least some world class attributes if he can beat him.

Cause he hasn't faced all the domestic names, and not fought for the British title, I believe Khan gets unfairly treated a tad by us "geeks". The guy has beaten a recent world champion, the man who beat an undefeated European champion, and a guy who drew with another former world champion.

Khan will deserve some of the bollocks if he wins, cause he would have beaten a guy who was around the top ten P4P 12 months ago, and is ranked in the top 10 in alot of independent rankings (as a Lightweight). When has Thaxton/Murray ever come close to doing that?

Sure, if Warren calls him the second coming of Christ or Muhammad Ali - then yes, that will be bollocks cause this isn't the old MAB - but if all Warren says is that he is now ready for a title fight... well I don't think that is too far fetched - Barrera was going to get one fighting these tune ups, and he still wouldn't look out of his place.

Alot will depend on what happens on the night, I am sure whatever happens the critics will have their knives ready. Comprehensively out boxes MAB - it will be Khan cannot punch, Chins Barrera in one - it will be Barrera cannot take a shot a lightweight. Something in between - it will be slow old Barrera can catch him - Thaxton will knock him out.
Stu - Your post deservesa reply.

I honestly feel strongly about the outcome of the fight.

I will state again MAB is one of my all time boxing heros and I simply cannot understand why he feels compelled to fight Khan other than money!!! - I also cannot understand the money side of things when it was only recently he was a partner at Golden Boy & he has been in some massive fights which surely should have paid a nice some.

But lets get onto the fight - its the longevity of MABs career and the superb but importantly hard fights that he has been in that makes me severly question what he has left other than the desire to balance the books at the bank - For me MAB is one of those fighters who falls into the cateogory when he loses what he had he will go down hill fast - that for me is the biggest reason why I see him losing the fight against Khan.

Secondly - MAB used to be a lightening quick puncher - but never a single conscusive one and as such the naturally bigger Khan should be able to take MABs more solid punches if he stands around long enough for MAB to be able to land them - I honestly believe MAB has aged quickly.

Then thirdly - lets speak about Khan - and lets be honest here - offensively Khan is good to watch - he is naturally bigger than MAB and has a bloody good range of punches which suggest to me he could put MAB under pressure quite early in the fight - the question I have about Khan is whether he punches himself out of gas. But nonetheless he is very very good on the front foot when he has fighters under pressure.

I completely agree with anyone who questions Khans chin - he clearly has problems there - but come on - is MAB with the ageing factor and not being as quick as he was going to be the opponent who is quick enough and strong enough to stop Khan in his tracks - I do not think so.

Finally - for all his faults - Mr W arren is a very shrewd operator which has whether people like it or not a top promoter - in addition his Matchmaker - Dean Powell knows his stuff - ask yourself this - why on earth would they put Khan into a fight like this - unless they were very confident - or yes you could put it the other way - they want their man to lose to save the expense of paying over the odds purses for Khan??

Every angle I look at this fight leads me to believe Amir Khan will stop MAB and look very good in doing so - when in reality despite MABs status as a legend of the ring - SN & Team Khan have got Khan in exactly the right time to face MAB - and they simply have to be congratulated for doing so

:o :o Trust me - I would love MAB to win - I would love to see Mr W arrens face if it were to happen - but alas - I just cant see it happening!!!

I have to agree that Barrera looks to have slipped alot in his two most recent fights, and in theory Khan being very quick on the offence could give this version of Barrera nightmares.

But you cannot ignore what the Khan hype overlooks. This being that St.Clair was never in the slightest bit of trouble against him .. and a shop worn Michael Gomez is nowhere near the class of a shop worn Barrera.

Barrera put down Marquez with a single punch and he only seems to come apart against better than average punchers with quick hands .. Khan has the fast hands, but doesn`t hit nearly as hard as his record suggests .. and Barrera will without doubt carry enough to get Khan out of there if he lands.

Khan is doing his usual delusional talking about how great he is now under Roach  .. but all he has had is one predictable win against the level of fighter he always looked good against.

If Warren thinks by beating Barrera it will be a sign that Khan is ready to win a world title then I`m not sure who I really feel sorry for .. Warren or Khan

what happened with MAB and golden boy? people are of the opinion that MAB is fighting amir purely for money, does he have money troubles? surely he would have a few million banked from over the years (although wouldnt be the first boxer to squander it all)!

Good response, I am on the fence untill I get a good look at Marco at the weigh in and all. I think your under estimating the body punching and durability of Marco a tad. I do agree, that I don't think Marco will be able to one punch KO Khan - however, I think he hits as hard and as fast as Gomez, much better defensively and much quicker than Gomez.

Marco might have lost half a yard, but kind of like Ryan Giggs, has adapted and still very much "elite". I honestly think he could take Campbell, but for the reasons you have stated, I am more concerned (as a Barrera fan) about this one. Khan's bigger and faster than Campbell, if not as rounded... but I think its the "not as rounded" factor that could be his undoing.

Its such a tough fight to call.

As for why Barrera is fighting on... its the desire to fight for the world title at Lightweight. To be the first mexican - he said that before he announced he planned on retiring, he wanted to do this... and indeed signed to fight then champion Jesus Chavez - before Chavez did in his arm/shoulder. That is my hope about Marco - he saw the champions - Campbell etc and thought, with Pacquiao moving up... beatable!

I think if it was all about the money, then Barrera would get paid more handsomely having a rematch with Marquez or a 4th encounter with Morales (who is apparently considering a comeback) - than Khan.

Tonyevs - I think the only times Barrera has ever fallen apart was the first fight with Junior Jones (who was inspired that night, where did that chin come from) and the 1st fight with Pacquiao. Sure he has lost others, but they were very close.

Although I disagree with your last PG, Tony. It depends on the manner of the win. But Khan could learn so much from this fight that he will be ready. I maintain, I think Barrera beats Campbell.

He was just treading water, especially in that one in China. As the commentator said, it was more like a sparring session, and Barerra finished it easily. That said, the opponents were very limited.

Barrera will be pesky and crafty but he's a small, fat, soft lightweight.

How much does the fight tell us about Khan? How much does the fight develop Khan?

It probably buys Khan agood world ranking in some of the alphabet orgs. It's an occasion, it gets a lot of press and is name enough for PPV. Everyone can make some money. But...

How many questions does this fight really answer? I think a fight with someone like Anthony Peterson or Yuri Romanov (or Prescott, LOL) would answer more questions.

Alot will depend on Barerra's ability to absorb Khan's punches.

I completely agree!!!

However, due to his age and the magnificent battles he has been in the past - I honestly believe MAB will get stopped - I am going to put a "but" in here - as long as Freddie Roach is there on the night - without a sound cornerman the biggest danger for Khan in my opinion is something similar what happened to David Haye in the carl Thompson fight and that is punching himself out of gas!!!

Yes but lets not forget the press release from Ray Hatton 'I actually had Barrera beating Pacquaio' I personally had Barrera up before the Setanta broadcast went down :witzend: I did have MAB beating Marquez though and he did outbox Pac and land cleaner shots for periods

Then your wrong because hes been physically declining since 2000 and been getting by on his wits since moving to 130.

Not sure how this is going to go, Barrera has always had problems with fast high paced fighter, is old, slowing and small at 135 but Barrera also has more skill than anyone not named Hopkins

BTW if Khan beats Barrera he can beat Campbell too. Campbells being talked about as the top dog but he twice lost to Peden (who Barrera dominated), is 36 himself and has 5 losses in 4 years
