Messy fight. Bitterly-disappointed with Magee in Belfast - with both men to be honest.
Ian Darke is now talking about a rematch. Do us a favour, Darkie!

A very hollow win I thought. I think Magee can hit a bit but he's pretty cautious. He should have followed those straight lefts with a hook and I think Reid would have been in more trouble. I actually though Reid was legitimately hurt for a second in the last round from a straight left, their was a nervous look on his face but Magee didn't follow up.

I think what we saw from Reid early on was the fallout from the Ottke fight. He new he'd be up against it away from home and he tried to get the ref on his side straight away. I find it difficult to be overly critical of his antics, he was in the wrong, but i can understand his reasons. He'll probably be a little ashamed at his reaction to the supposed low blow when he watches the fight though.
I thought that two of the knockdowns were certainly legit, the fourth looked like a bit of a push and was a gift for Reid. Got to agree with Jim Watt for the other knockdown, it was basically a slip but a punch did land at the same time, giving the ref no choice.

Magee certainly has heart, but it was surprising to hear Watt say he has a good chin. Reid can hit, but Magee just seems too fragile to last at top level. I thought he was hurt by a right in the first too.
As for the low blow, I thought maybe Reid was complaining it was a LATE blow, as the ref had called break? Not sure about that though. I didn't tape it, thankfully.
But he was like Sven Ottke in there, the number of times he looked at the referee for help.

That's what I thought. The reply showed Reid turned away holding his stoumach, not his groin as I originally thought. Wouldn't be surprised to find that it was for hitting on the break. Still stupidly harsh though, a warning would've surficed.MightyWarrior wrote:As for the low blow, I thought maybe Reid was complaining it was a LATE blow, as the ref had called break? Waht a horiible fight though? Please God, no rematch!

Reid was the poor one. He might have lost all those rounds from 1 to 12 if not for the knockdowns. Maybe he was concerned his modelling career would be over if he got bashed up too much. He complained non-stop for the first 8 rounds or something like that. The cut on his head was as much his fault as it was Magee's.
Couldn't agree more. Reid was badly scarred (mentally) by Ottke and decided to get his own back...with Magee the unfortunate victim. I gave it to Reid exactly the same score as Richie Davies (113-112).glittermonkey wrote:I think what we saw from Reid early on was the fallout from the Ottke fight. I have a feeling that Darke and Watt were wrong when they were saying 'Well, Magee won the round but with the knockdown, that makes it 10-9'. I think you still have to give it 10-8 and I did so. Found it hard to score a round for Reid other than the knockdowns...fortunately for him, there were plenty of them!
Spot on, I was thinking about this whilst on my way back from the shops this morning and was going to post my views, but you beat me to it.glittermonkey wrote:I think what we saw from Reid early on was the fallout from the Ottke fight. Like many have aleady said it was a messy fight that failed to get into anysort of rhythm. I wasn't that dissappointed with Magee because as I've said before I've always doubted that he was truely world class, he just seems to have 'something' missing,
I was more disappointed with Reid, although I thought he just won the fight. Not for the first time he seemed to lack that finishing instinct. I think with Reid it that he is so much of a counter puncher and thinking fighter that he finds it easy to be 're-active' but not 'pro-active' and take the lead for any period of time.
His mind set seems to be at times lets not get hit but try and land a shot as oppesed to lets hit him then try and not get hit. Which is no bad thing, it just doesn't always make for a thrilling fight.
But please no rematch.

A classic fight of two counter punchers both trying to draw leads that the other wasn't capable of throwing
I gave the fight to Reid 114-111.
It was an ugly fight, but heart won out. I am pleased for Reid. He seems like a decent guy and deserves an extended moment in the sun
But, as everybody says. Please God no rematch
