Who Was Heavyweight Champion...

Post by Goodnight, Irene »

...when you were born? Heavyweight is the flagship division, so it was my choice here, but you can add other, relevant weightclasses if you wish. A chance for us to learn a little more about one another.

Me = Larry Holmes.

I was born in 1985, so I believe the Heavyweight champions at the time were Larry Holmes (later in the year Spinks would defeat Holmes) and Tony Tubbs who beat Page for the WBA title.

GI

I do this as a joke in my family.
:P
Instead of Chinese calendar years or whatever i pretend to 'tell about a person'
based on what year they were born and who the HW champ was...and how
'healthy' there reign was.

I was born in a strong year of Holmes. It means I am confident, focused, and
always determined to establish my place in the world.

Or something to that effect...its just as effective as star signs, monkey or
chicken symbols etc.....but its more fun :PP

I got the weak end of Holmes' time, being born in '84, when he was distinctly on the slide. Still, a long, distinguished reign. Sure, it had faults, but they all do, in truth.

HW: Leon Spinks
LHW: Mate Parlov (WBC) / Victor Galindez (WBA)
MW: Hugo Corro
LMW:Rocky Mattioli (WBC) / Eddie Gazo (WBA)
WW: Carlos Palomino (WBC) / Pipino Cuevas (WBA)
LWW:Saensak Muangsurin (WBC) / Antonio Cervantes (WBA)
LW: Roberto Duran (3 months vacated :( )
SFW: Alexis Arguello (WBC) / Samuel Serrano (WBA)
FW: Danny Lopez (WBC) / Eusebio Pedroza (WBA)
LFW: Carlos Zarate (WBC) / Jorge Lujan (WBA)
Fly: Miguel Canto (WBC) / Guty Espadas (WBA)

Interesting little exercise, great idea.
If this turns into a tourney( ), i'm entering the little fella's, WW and below.
But Leon Spinks? That's a sobering thought, what would you read into that, Robinson?
Why couldn't those damn judges give Ali one more gift decision, eh?
It might have changed the course of my life!

Witherspoon,

The time of Leon is a unique windown of time...

your life is one of short lived joy followed by many disappointments.
Leon Spink's are generally quick to smile, party goers that seem to
shy away from worldy challenges, even though they have an outward
apperance.

It depends on what day of the year of L Spinks you were born that
determines your personality...the more details of hour, day etc help
one work it out...it co relates to how much coke the champ had at the
time.

The year of the champ readings is a science.

The entire thread is an elaborate rouse to place a legitimate estimate on BoxBuzz's age. No luck luring the cagey old vet out yet. We await with baited breath... 8)

Wow. This is freakily accurate (I even have a younger brother who outshines me, runs his own department at Barclays).
You should think about the commercial potential of Year of The Champ.

The heavyweight title was vacant when I was born. And no, it wasn't during the period following Jeffries' retirement and before Marvin Hart won it! :D .

Haha :) It is often more accurate than tarot cards, star signs and
numerology.

My year of the champion method does not fail....the gloves of the
goddess and the ring of the Gods, will always answer those that
ask.

My guess is he's referring to Ali's 1979 retirement.

No, I am older than that. :D
Well, I guess it matters if you consider Jimmy Ellis the champion or not. I go back and forth between that myself.
