How well do you think DeGale will do in the pro ranks ?
How well do you think DeGale will do in the pro-ranks ?
Some people, most notably David Haye and Chris Eubank, feel that DeGale will not be a big succes in the professional ranks. David Haye feels that DeGales' style is more suited to the amateurs and wont be able to make a full transition to the pro ranks. Eubank feels that giving DeGale a retainer of one million pounds, will de-incentivise the fighter and is convinced that he will not make the grade because of it.....
What are your thoughts on this ?

Honestly? From what I've seen of him as an amateur...
English title. British title challenge.
It all depends what other domestic guys are around at the time he reaches that kind of level.

Re: How well do you think DeGale will do in the pro ranks ?
with his style its going to be an interesting career if he has his heart in it. after the first half dozen feelers he is going to get drawn into wars which will be very entertaining and watchable but i fear this will not lead to a long career. he may get a euro title shot..i wish him all the best though.
Re: How well do you think DeGale will do in the pro ranks ?
So hard to predict, completely different sport these days. Thats why I cannot understand why SN has invested so much worries - look at the success of Khan and Harrison.
But even their careers are better than the one time American percieved Golden Boy - Ricky Williams.
I think he can be lazy in 4 x 2's - some people called it relaxed, I remain to be convinced. He does look good when he opens up though.

Do well then eventually challenge Sutherland and lose. Thats what I hope but I honestly think he will become a British or European champ and thats it. FW has probably the hardest Olympians to make a guess on how they will do. Maloney is lucky because if Jefferies has power he could do big damage and Sutherland we will know more about this year and Price could do well with Hayemaker aswell

From what I've seen of him I would agree Brit/Euro titles into fringe world class - depending, of course, on how deep his division is when he's beginning to reach his peak. I also wish him well and will happily see him prove me wrong.

Degale and Groves looked shit, how the hell can you call that boxing (its more like fencing.)

Haye has the ache because he couldn't sign DeGale and they had a war of words. Haye also has Groves, who has made it clear he will be using DeGales name to put himself in the limelight(nothing wrong with that, afterall it's business! Still don't agree with "He would trade that Gold Medal for a win over me" line that Groves came out with the other day though!
)
Eubank, although I love the man, is a bit of a mentallist who loves nothing more than trying to tell everybody, young fighters especially how to do their thing. I had to laugh when he was telling Adam Booth that haye needs to do this and that on Buncey's show the other day...Chirs, Haye held more belts at Cruiser than you, Watson, Benn and Collin's won between you at Mid and Super Mid!
DeGale has the talent to go to the Eurpean and maybe World level and mix it. It's all about application with him as shown in his bout with groves(which I still think DeGale won to be honest)He needs to be tested and not be allowed to coast. That's when he switches off.

I can't see Degale doing much better than British title.
Darren Sutherland is the one to watch. I am ready to put my house on it!
Darren's style is that of a pro- strong, puncher. Apparently he has been dominating in sparring aginst good pros.
Sutherland also has a very likeable down to earth personality.

I thought the same with regards to Eubank on the boxing hour......yiddo14 wrote:Haye has the ache because he couldn't sign DeGale and they had a war of words. He has some thougtful insights at times and obviously he has the experience to give advice to up and coming pro boxers, but the guy's silly persona detarcts form what he is saying and also, he seems to expect an almost reverential silence when he speaks, a bit like the Pope
As for DeGale, i agree with what most posters hace said in their replies, that he will do well at domestic and European level, but fall short of being able to mix it at a world class level. I'm not sure whether having the one million pound reatainer will act as a de-motivating tool or not, but the bigger question is whether he can accomodate his style to be reasonably successful in the pro ranks......
As with all British fighters, i wish him look, but i have a gut feeling that he will fall short.

It's so early to say for sure but I hope a Degale-Sutherland match can be made at some point in the future.

Considering his promotional team I expect him to win a world title and defend it against excellent opposition for the next 35 years.
UNLESS..
He picks one of his own opponents to stamp his authority on his own career and gets spanked in a round!

I'm not that interested in following his career - The first four years will be a complete waste of anyone's time apart from the people who are lining their pockets.
I'll take some interest when he starts fighting people from his own weight and with a winning record.
See you in 5 years then..

Iv'e said that for a long time that Warren will feed DeGale plenty of no-hopers and it wont be untill around 15 to 20 fights before we can really start to gauge what his true potential could be.....
I'll see you in three years....

Re: How well do you think DeGale will do in the pro ranks ?
Degale will be protected and kept away from real dangers and get a world title shot on his own terms. He has some world class attributes and if he works on his whole game he will be world class. Footwork/distance/timing, fast accurate shots. But will he buckle down to be a 12round fighter (which takes lots of 5am roadwork) with a 2million signing on fee?
Re: How well do you think DeGale will do in the pro ranks ?
I would expect no less! He will get lots of opportunities, lots of guys will come fight him on FW terms - semi retired fighters, decent names coming off beatings, underpower fighters from smaller weights - and then the inevitable title shot at the right time, in the right place. All the good British fighters will call him out, but he will not likely answer the call cos he's the man, the money fighter, and anyone good will have to expect small money, perhaps FW options on them in case they win, and no real money unless a rematch happens i..e you have to beat him twice to cash in. There will be so many good fights that don't happen, and because he was such an investment, they won't be able to bring punchers and strong guys in ...in case he gets hurt, the very fights that would develop him into a (more) complete pro. So even more so he'll need the fights at the right place, at the right time.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Degale will be protected and kept away from real dangers and get a world title shot on his own terms. We all know the routine so hopefully they surprise us.
I hope it isn't like that. I hope he'll have strong ideas of how he wants his career handling. Not the usual "I leave it all to FW, the best promoter in the galaxy"...Hope I don't sound cynical, but things condition me to be that way.

Thats been the case with Calzaghe, Hatton and Khan, although people forget the first 2 were protected for years. Hamed was let of the leash a bit more though by Frankie though and Frank himself claims he often offers his fighters fights and they don't fancy the risk/effort reward ratio.Autobarn wrote:I would expect no less! Re: How well do you think DeGale will do in the pro ranks ?
I think the difference is that Hatton and Calzaghe had to build up their careers for quite some time, before they started to make Warren or themselves any money, particularly Calzaghe. Khan has been a different case, because of the publicity he recieved and has become a cash cow to Warren, hence all the low quality fights to keep the show on the road. The prescott defeat stunted the the progress, hence Warren's big gamble that Barerra is shot and Khan bests a "name" and re-launches his career. The same applies to DeGale, in that he has had the publicity and so will become a cash cow to Warren and therefore needs protection. You can see how much Warren hopes to make out of DeGale by the amount of money he has given him upfront, abiet that he will recieve it in installments......Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Thats been the case with Calzaghe, Hatton and Khan, although people forget the first 2 were protected for years. Hatton was making £500k per WBU defense and were talking blown up SFWs, that looks to be more than Khan's getting and most of those fights weren't any better than an old M Gomez or Limmond and Hatton was 30-something fights in before he stepped up against Tyszu. Khan's moving faster than Hatton, there wasn't any Prescotts for Hatton
