Jermain 'No Intentions' Taylor on Calzaghe and Froch

Post by DG. »

“First, it would have been one of the highlights of my career to be in the ring with a champion who has proven himself like Joe Calzaghe! The best always want to fight the best, and I wanted to fight Joe. As a fellow champion and warrior, I know the price we have to pay in the ring. Joe retired healthy, wealthy and with a Hall of Fame career. Although I am disappointed that we won’t face each other, I applaud his decision to leave on his own terms, and wish Joe the best of luck. As for Carl Froch, he is no Ray Leonard, and certainly no Joe Calzaghe, and can’t be mentioned in the same breath as those two great champions.Carl Froch never earned the right to be on the same canvas as Joe Calzaghe! Other than in his hometown, a bare few know the name Carl Froch, and how to spell it or pronounce it.”

Idiot.

Learn how to pronounce Froch and you have the key to victory, Jermain.

The problem Froch has, is that he thinks he always needs to say exctly what is on his mind, hence his daft comments about Calzaghe's retirement which just sound sad and bitter - even the presenter on Setanta said something like "you think he never had a career-defining fight because he didn't fight you".

Contrast that with the statements from Taylor and another from Dawson. Sometimes you just have to keep your gob shut and show some respect for a fellow boxer, but Froch thought Calzaghe's retirement was all about Carl Froch

Terence wrote:Taylor: Hopkins x 2, D Winky Wright, Lacy, wins over Spinks and Ouma.

Froch: Pascal, Reid and Magee.

Clearly, Taylor is not afraid of Froch, he just wants more money, because he can ask for it on the basis of his wins/name. Froch's team need to wake up.
Portents of future rule.

Froch is no respecter of reputations. He will test Jermain's will, killer instinct and stamina, something that let him down vs Pavlik.

It's good that he's going for the meaningful fights. We need more of this.

Taylor can run but he can't hide.

Because JT and promoter are afraid to fight Froch away from home.

If it happens I think it'll be Sky. ITV I doubt can make fights like this happen.

I don't know what Hennessy's relationship is like with Sky right now.

I seem to remember ITV have problems screening overnight fights because they make so much money off that crappy Quiz call thing. However, you would think they could get a lot of mileage out of it, including a Sunday morning replay.

It doesn't make sense to pay pots of money on an ad funded network to show sport in the middle of the night. The economics doesn't stack up and ITV admitted as much after Calzaghe - Lacy.

I suppose it depends how watertight Hennesey's contract with ITV is. Lets face it Froch is the jewel in the Hennesey crown so will ITV be willing to carry on with the rest of the stable now Froch has bigger fish to fry and and possibly a bigger chippy to sell them in??! Apologies for the rubbish metaphor.

Taylor showed Hopkins's, greater, rep little respect in the early going first time around, that won him the fight.

Taylor went for, far more, meaningful fights.

Froch can run his mouth but he can't hide the truth, they probably cannot even get him a #10 boxer over for a UK based fight.

Clearly, the WBC want Taylor as their main man. Froch is out-gunned in this one, even before they get into the ring. It is not nice, but it is true, he needs to stop playing silly beggars & hope that Taylor gives him this opportunity.
I don't think taylor wil last as a super middleweight. Lacks the artillery.

Froch is the hungrier fighter. He will eat Taylor, if JT steps up to the plate.

I think Taylor can be very successful at SM. I was at the second Pavlik fight, and I actually scored by a round to Taylor. If he could have sustained his attacks he would have won comfortably.

I'm going to assume it was his weight issues that caused these limited attack spurts.

Personally I think at 168 he might be too prolific, accurate and classy for Froch.

from ITV4 the other week:

so Carl, how do you see Amir Khan's fight going with Marco Antonio Barrera?

"Well it's a like Roy Jones and Joe Calzaghe isn't it. A prime Roy Jones would've destroyed a prime Calzaghe, wiped the floor with him".

Lol I did laugh at that one.

Maybe an idiot but he's sooo right.

And as previously mentioned, if Calzaghe didn't have a career defining fight (load of bullshit) then why should he fight another no mark like Froch  ?

We need the Cobra to rub these guys up the wrong way, shake things up, shame some of these TV honeys into the ring. Demanding the best fights. Boxing is cutting down on the easy money mismatches, you have to do more to get your money. If these jokers don't want any of it, let them do Celebrity Big Brother or Dancing On ice. Let's see how many real competitors there are at 168. Inkin deposed, Bute falling to pieces at the end of Andrade fight, already it's narrowing down. My guess is Taylor will be wishing it was 2 years ago when you could get a few million $ for fighting a welter-cum-light-middle-cum-middle.

I just see Froch being another Witter .. he even seems to have developed a bitter obsession with another Brit boxer :(

Nobody(big names) really needs Froch .. whilst Froch, as highlighted by the 3names put forward in his defence (Pascal,Reid and Magee) has yet to have a big name opponent .. and he`s how old?

His bitter obsession with Calzaghe just makes him look a bigger tool than he already does :(

that's not what I meant!!

the question was about Amir Khan's fight!!.....It made me laugh against the backdrop of the slangin match between Froch Calzaghe that even such a straight forward question gets dragged into it.

I expect a prime roy jones would possibly have beated Joe but not as easily as some say, I think Joe could box to the level of his opponent and if that had taken place prime for prime against such a dangerous opponent as Jones I think Joe would have been like greased lightening round that ring, in addition to boxing he wasn't afraid of a scrap either.
Thing is when Jones WAS at his peak would Joe not have been lagging a bit in experience due to the age gap maybe? I don't know, not saying he would.
Also did it not come out in the wash a bit back that RJJ was on banned substances??
Bit like the joke of Shane Mosley saying I TOOK drugs, ONCE , for Oscar De La Hoya fight....but it's okay cos I don't take them no more.....Oh, okay...carry on Mr Mosley.......Bullshit! Have his licence and tell him to piss off IMO.

No, Roy Jones was NOT confirmed as a drugs cheat. This has been covered here in great deal before, he failed one test, but the second sample from the same test passed as clean. They always take two samples to make sure one is not tainted.

Roy did look suspicously big for the Ruiz fight, and I've always had my doubts, but the fact remains he never failed a drugs test.

I was talking about a fight with Jones hypothetically, Jones had already moved up out of the division by 1996 so it was never really an option anyway, though they could have fought at 175.

I will bow to your superior knowledge on the one then if that is the case. Apologies, I thought he'd failed one there was that much hoohah on here I, wrongly, took it as fact.
What about Mosley (without wishing to go off thread, something I never do  )...did he ever fail a sample?? or did he just come out and make a confession?? what would his incentive have been to make such a confession? Are you able to clarify or was it a quiet news day on Boxrec that day as well?

I thought Taylor was going to be all that at 168. However, v Pavlik 2, he could not sustain attacks. I thought weight was the problem, and while it was a problem, it doesn't mean he's going to be this super vibrant, lively fighter. He will always fade down the stretch, because vs super middles it'll be bigger men and this is a strain.

I expected/hoped taylor would really sizzle vs Lacy but if anything he looked tentative and lethargic after a nice start.
