Only when I read the paper. I don't particularly remember sub-heads. The story didn't go on the back, so that would have been a picture which I don't remember at all. I certainly didn't write that Calzaghe was Britain's only unbeaten champion. I said he was the third longest reigning world champion in history and one of only two boxers to hold WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles at the same weight.
I normally just read through my copy to see if anything has been changed. It's subbed and laid out in the office, I wrote that in about 45 mins while sat on my sofa.

The sub headline underneath the picture on the back page (which took up half the back page) read "Britains only undefeated world champion retires"

If you dont write that then who does?

And if its your sub-editor then you probably need to have a word with him because having inaccurate headlines like that which has YOUR name underneath it makes YOU look like you havent a clue what you are talking about.

We get the Telegraph on our reception and thats why I spotted William's garbage but two people emailed me by 10am saying have a look at the back page of the Times and see if you can notice the mistake.

I'll add it to my monthly list of moans. Thanks!

Having looked it up now, it is not actually above my name, at least. My name is above the story under :Calzaghe retires at the summit", while the unbeaten bit is on the back with the main pic and just a link to the story.

That wouldn't have been a sub, probably someone higher up. As a writer, you supply the number of words requested and hope for the best, your actual power over what appears is pretty limited, unless you are in the office that day and actually see it on the page. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's a real pain. I remember I did a big piece on Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield in December before they both boxed in Germany and was really happy with it, but the headline just referred to them as "Fortysomethings" which killed it, because it just sounded like any old boxers, rather than two big names.

At least in sport they are unlikely to rewrite my words too much, if it goes up to the front of the paper, it's a different story, as I discovered with the Peter Buckley story which I got slaughtered for.

Apologies for being offensive, but the handful of times I've met Marsh, he's been an utter moron.

Not lazy. It just proves that he is not really a boxing journalist and probably doesnt follow Boxing that much. He just doesnt have enough knowledge of the sport.

Steve Bunce would never had made a mistake like this.

True - Bunce is usually factually correct, even if his subjective ramblings are utter drivel.

I remember both his "world title" fights being live on ITV - great atmosphere from the circus tent in Basildon. Manley was no great shakes at world level to be honest, Marsh was solid and well schooled but had little power. He got a terrible cut against Kameda.

Terry - good articles.

Out of interest, how did you find him? As mentioned above, I've seen him at a boxing fayre and at a couple of other events and he didn't seem the most pleasant man, but reading the article, he is obviously somewhat complex.

Loynesy, always found him an interesting, friendly and challenging guy, with a decent sense of humour. Fayre's are not the best places to catch people, and he himself admits that his after dinner spiel used to be poor. Bad timing perhaps? The last speaking engagement I saw him perform was quite good, engaged the crowd and dealth with a heckler in good humour. I would recommend the book, and the one on the Warren case, forget its title, Lords of the Ring, I think
I'm sure you are right, I agree, a Boxing Fayre can be an awful place to chat to someone unless the speaker is a natural wit/upbeat and I certainly haven't spoken to him in any depth - it was just an impression that I am happy for you to have corrected.

I'll check out the books.

Thanks

I remember reading that Marsh "accidentally" fell off a wall while being interviewed, in the hope that the clip would end up on the prime time "Auntie's Bloomers". He was right. This kind of cynical crap tells me everything I need to know about Marsh.

Joe Calzaghe recently beat up an old man on late night TV, just to get his face out there, that is cynical! We have had this conversation before, badly, we could agree that peope have done worse things to get on TV.
Yep - I remember our previous conversation about Terry Marsh. I always liked the view that he retired because he knew he was on a collision course with someone with genuine talent - Meldrick Taylor, and knew his unbeaten record would go. I just don't like the guy, but I admit people have certainly done worse to get their faces on TV. He is not quite on the level of Jade Goody.

As for Jones against Calzaghe - I don't have a problem with that one. There were plenty of "experts" who even picked Jones to beat Calzaghe. Jones had lost his chin, but Calzaghe had lost his punch, so it kind of evened out there. I thought it was a pretty entertaining match to be honest, and I really enjoyed seeing Jones getting taunted, after watching him taunt overmatched opponents for years. Jones was probably about the third best lightheavy Calzaghe could have faced, and I see no disgrace in that.

Terry was forced to retire, right - cause of medical reasons?

Terry had a freak like ability to absorb body shots, I rememeber sometimes he used to just cover up his face - allowing his opponent free reign on his stomach and Terry would be just almost laughing.

I remember the banter with Camacho. I was young then to remember all about it, was it going to happen? It seemed like it was all set.

Fighters who have no outside charisma should not try to showboat, it highlights just how banal they really are. Joe's showboating was the worst in living memory. He did not strike a blow for the 'victims' of what Jones once did, he just looked like he could not pull out 12 x 3 minutes of work against a man who was just there to make a bit of dough.

It was a poor spectacle, Joe's last effective fight was the Kessler one, I would actually watch that fight again, the full fight as well.
I'm not going to fall out with you over it Terence - I've mellowed a bit since the epic "Marsh row" I've never met the guy and you have, so you've had a chance to appreciate his finer qualities. I also appreciate your writing these days - I didn't much back then.

What's this showboating "that worked" idea? Are you suggesting that unless showboating results in a knockdown it hasn't worked? I thought it was all part of Calzaghe's mind games which did a good job of stealing the show from Jones and demoralising him.

I'm not entirely uncritical of Calzaghe - I think he could have done more to get himself big fights earlier, but he's still a big favourite of mine.

Well it wasn't in ring showboating, but remember Carl Thompson's ring enterance ahead of the Eubank fight (can't remember which one) - where he is trying to dance and be cool. That was up there for one of the worst showboating.

Marsh retired after he said he had epilepsy and had suffered blackouts. It was a story he sold to the papers (Sun I think). He then said it was untrue when told he was going to get kicked out of the fire brigade because of it as well. Warren always said the epilepsy story was untrue and just dramatic nonsense to make some money.

Yeh epilepsy was he reason he cited for retiring. He went back on that a year or so later when proposing to make a comeback. He was training for 3 months or so with Benn’s first trainer at the Central pub in East Ham. I remember the first time he came up there with Colin McMillan (who I think he was advising at the time).

Anyways the comeback fell through.

An interesting and complex character is Marsh. He gave a bit of a mini rant, once, over why he is and always will be a socialist whilst subsequently appearing on the local news looking to be a prospective Lib/Dem candiddate for his home town of Basildon.

I was always under the impression (although I was a kid) that the epilepsy story was leaked... and that was the reason why he was under suspicion for the shooting.

Not sure if that was the case, but I do believe he had epliepsy as a kid and thats why any comeback was foiled.
