THE heavyweight nicknamed "Solo" is living up to his moniker, going it alone in phase two of his journey to become a world champion.
Solomon Haumono is determined to get his stop-start career motoring full steam this year. Speaking for the first time since since splitting from Anthony Mundine's camp, he said: "I have learned a lot in the past year. Now I have people behind me who are genuine in trying to achieve the goals I have set for myself.
"I have taken a lot into account, and I'm just looking forward. I am a just person, this is the way it is and it's not going to stop me from going where I want to. Credibility, people will see as the year goes by. The quality of opponents and promotions we're trying to do, I'm trying to bring it back to the clean image and trying to bring the sport back to where it should be."
Haumono is running 15 to 20 kilometres a day at 2am on a full stomach as part of a radical training regime designed to give him "the edge" on opponents, which he hopes will include Kiwi Shane Cameron by year's end.
The former league hitman will be busy in the ring this year after a seven-month lay-off, and starts with a bout against Oscar Talemaira on February 21. Haumono (15-0, 14KO) has already knocked out Talemaira - in one round - in a previous bout, and this will be merely an exercise in removing ring rust, in the country town of Moree.
Two weeks later, he will fight veteran Colin Wilson in an Australian heavyweight title elimination battle, after which he should fight for the national crown vacated by close friend John Hopoate. Haumono said he would "never" fight Hopoate.
"By the end of the year, if all goes to plan, I will have the Australian title, a regional title, and will be regarded as a threat in the heavyweight division," he said. "I will make it clear, by the time the year is out, you will see some quality fights with me. They will be fights not for entertainment but actual sport. That's why I'm in the game. I am not here to entertain people, I am an athlete."
Haumono celebrated the birth of his fourth child, daughter Talita, last week. "As much as I have hopes of what I can accomplish this year, nothing can bring me more joy than what the year has already given me, my daughter," Haumono said.

Re: solo to fight in moree feb 21st
Good to see, i hope the fight with cameron happens.
So if he wont fight hoppa, i'm assuming Mirovic is his opponent for the vacant Australian title?

Re: solo to fight in moree feb 21st
I don't think that fight is happening, Talemaira is fighting Leapai on the 20th of feb. unless Talemaira has had a steel jaw implant and can survive the fight(highly unlikely) with leapai, he will not be allowed to fight.cace wrote:THE heavyweight nicknamed "Solo" is living up to his moniker, going it alone in phase two of his journey to become a world champion.

Re: solo to fight in moree feb 21st
Solomon was quoted in one media report to be preparing for 10 bouts in 2009. On his past form, where is the wisdom in this. In his first carnation, Solomon has 8 fights in 2 years between 03-07-2000 and 14-06-2002. On his return in 2007 he peaked at 5 fights for that year but tapered off with only 2 in 2008.
We've heard all the blub before from Solomon's corner that "today is the pond - tomorrow the world". But it never happens - just a fight diet of bums, has-beens and never-wasers. About time to start stepping up Solomon!
Now why stage the bout in Moree? Brawls in the local pubs there will draw bigger crowds.

Re: solo to fight in moree feb 21st
There is no fight program listed for Moree for February 21. Haumono's next fight is against Colin Wilson at Campbelltown on the St Clair/Zappavigna card on March 11. As reported earlier in the thread, Talemeira is fighting Leapai in Queensland on February 20.
Would not be an exhibition or promotion would it?

By the way, the last fight held in Moree was for the New South Wales Heavyweight title in 1957.

Big Bob's not that old is he? Maybe he is!

Wrong Bob. Bob 'Jock' Murdoch (173lbs) TKO 10 Ross Jenkins (205lbs).Beltane wrote:Big Bob's not that old is he? Maybe he is!
Re: solo to fight in moree feb 21st
Is it possible that Solo said he would fight the winner of the Talemeira/Leapai fight and the journo got confused? Sounds more likely.
