The state inspector who supervised Antonio Margarito's hand wrapping Jan. 24 at the Staples Center testified this morning that Margarito was found to have a suspect bandage wrap inside a knuckle pad that was to be placed atop both his fists before a title fight against Shane Mosley.
Inspector Che Guevara testified that in three years and 150 hand wraps he had never seen such a pad.
"It was sweat-soaked, thinner and harder in certain areas, not hard as a rock, but firm and hard," Guevara said, adding it had a stain "like old blood" on it. "It was not flexible. It was very firm."
The harder pad was first discovered, Guevara said, by Mosley's trainer Nazim Richardson, who oversaw the wrapping. Margarito's taped right hand was then unwrapped, where another harder insert was found. State commissioners felt the insert in a plastic bag today.
The other insert is in the hands of the state attorney general's office. The "foreign substance" on the insert has yet to be identified and won't be known until mid-March, a state official told the California State Athletic Commission at its disciplinary hearing for Margarito and his trainer Javier Capetillo.
The commission will weigh a possible license revocation for the fighter and trainer. More details to come on Fabulous Forum.
As I've just said on the Current scene, Margarito and his trainer should both be banned for life IF convicted of using a hardening agent IMO (which is looking highly likely) and they should think themselves lucky they ain't in front of a proper court. The sports dangerous enough as it is

Hate casting aspertions before all the evidence is weighed so I will just say that if and until proven its still an if, this is what it seems at first glance, then a simple revocation of the licence is no way enough, anyone involved needs locking up.
Its a disgrace if proven and If so I hope we never have to hear his name being announced in a boxing ring again
In 1986, Lewis and Resto were both put on trial and found guilty of assault, criminal possession of a weapon (Resto's hands) and conspiracy. Prosecutors charged that the bout amounted to an illegal assault on Collins and that Resto should have known that the padding had been removed from his gloves. Resto served 2.5 years in prison.[1]
Thats only the second time if ever heard that name . Cant remember where I heard it before , I think there was an argentinian called che before . Apparently he done a lot of traveling on a bike and some other less important stuff.

Nah, the guy you are thinking of was called Ernesto
I don't think it increased his power given it always took so many punches for him to hurt his opponents and its not like he was ko'ing anyone cold. I think if anything it protected his hands and its been blown out of all proportion. I'd question if plaster/dried gauze is any harder than bone anyway. I could be wrong but surely he'd be more of a concussive puncher if his gloves were properly loaded
The Cotto fight was a mismatch until the 6th then all of a sudden Miguel couldn't suck it up, bottom line is Margarito had illegal raps that night also and smashed Cotto's nose to bits with them.
The collins lad....is he the guy that died? I remember some guy havin metal of some sort in his gloves and he smashed a poor young irish lad to bits....too brave for his own good that night.
I think margz should face a ban anyone that cheats in our wonderfull sport need shaming big time.
"Antonio Margarito's trainer, Javier Capetillo, has essentially fallen on the sword in the hand-wrapping scandal that is playing out during today's hearing in front of the California State Athletic Commission in Van Nuys.
Capetillo just told his attorney that he accidentally implanted inserts into the hand wraps of his boxer.
"I committed a big mistake," Capetillo said. "I don't want this young man [Margarito] to have problems. I'm here to cover any responsibility. I take full responsibility. I committed this innocent mistake."
Capetillo explained he accidentally pulled the insert from his training bag and placed it in Margarito's knuckle wraps on Jan. 24, just before Margarito's fight with Shane Mosley.
The commission has the power to revoke both Capetillo and Margarito's licenses."

He had relatives in Cork, apparently, a family called Lynch.
I think Margarito will get away with it, I can see his coach being banned for life... but then what is stopping Margarito work with him "unofficially".
Incidently, I'm just wondering what are people's views on convicted drug cheats with boxing. It might not be as "direct" as a glove tampering incident, but if someone can punch say 2/3% harder as the result of steriods, or make weight more confortably (and therefore, fighting at a lower weight than he should be) as a result of diruretics... then shouldn't criminal proceedings be brought against him - should something happen?
I don't know why, but I cannot help but think that this alledge disgusting crime (which I think it is) has helped gloss over Shane's wrong doings.

Guess we would have found out which method of cheating was best if they hadn't discovered the illegal wraps

Well I am not suggesting people are wrong for suggesting criminal proceedings, but should the same occur for steriods use also?

Billy Collins was a young prospect who was beaten so badly ,that months after suffering from depression and very bad sight died in an alcohol related car crash. Billy's father caught the opponent by the hand after the fight and noticed that the glove didnt feel right. The horsehair was removed from his opponents gloves by his coach and the fighter recently admitted that he knew all about it. It makes me think how many fighters got away with this type of thing throughout the tears. The names of both the trainer and fighter escape me but (and correct me if im wrong) the trainer was the same trainer who was with Arron Pryor when he fought arguello and the bottle incident.
Im sure someone knows the names of the trainer and fighter involved?
Calls illegal pads an "innocent mistake"
Javier Capetillo, trainer of Antonio Margarito, had his trainer’s license revoked after testifying at today’s California State Athletic Commission’s disciplinary hearing. Capetillo stated that he accidentally put illegal pads into Margarito’s hand wraps prior to his bout with Shane Mosley. “I committed a big mistake,” Capetillo said according to the LA Times. “I don’t want this young man to have problems. I’m here to cover any responsibility. I take full responsibility. I committed this innocent mistake.”
———-
Earlier, CSAC Inspector Che Guevara testified that the pad inside Margarito’s hand wraps was “not hard as a rock, but firm and hard.” Inspector Mike Bray testified that there was “a white substance smeared across the pad, like a cast plaster.” The pads, confiscated by the commission before Margarito’s fight last month with Shane Mosley, are still being tested by the Commission. Margarito and Capetillo are currently on suspension pending the outcome of this case.
———-
Last week, Margarito’s previous opponent Miguel Cotto commented to Fightnews.com on Margarito’s current plight. “Margarito and his team are responsible for their acts,” said Cotto. “If they used the illegal handwraps or not was their decision. If it’s true they will have to face the consequences.”

Trainer was Panama Lewis and the fighter Luis Resto as someone said earlier I think. Just read about it in the book 'Four Kings' as it was on the undercard of Duran v Davey Moore. Trainer did a year's bird and the fighter 2 and a half. Both had their licences revoked for life, but Panama still works as a boxing advisor apparently.

Wonder if he's ever worked with Margarito
It is hard to ban someone from the sport of boxing
Straying off the point slightly , I have the book four kings haven't read it yet is it a worthwhile read?
