The 13th Round

Post by jayc »

Was it unlucky? I'll put up Ray Robinson against Maxim and Conn against Louis as evidence that it was. Can anyone think of any other fights which were lost in the 13th round by fighters ahead on the scorecards?

Well you could say the 13th was the round that foretold what was coming in the 14th for Tommy Hearns. You just knew he was talking on water and sinking. :TU:

Marciano-Walcott comes to mind. Rocky was behind on all three scorecards going into the 13th.

The great Roberto Duran would have been the champion against the great Marvin Hagler for the World Middleweight Crown....Hagler won the last 3 rounds in my scorecards to retain the title. Damn!!!

- Marv certainly never picked up many favors from the refs or judges. Probably looked a lot like the guy who mugged them coming and going from fights.

Near as I can tell, Billy Squires was the first unlucky victim of the 13th rd in a title fight, falling to Tommy Burns in Oz, perhaps a forewarning of things to come. Squires was improving rapidly, lasting 1, 8 and then 13 rds in his three title fights with Tommy, so was understandably quite miffed when Jack Johnson cut in front of him in the queue. Notice how Jack ducked Billy Squires afterwards.

Now, the wicked witch of the east must of smiled upon Ad Wolgast with back to back 13th rd KOs in title fights against Owen Moran and Joe Rivers. Then she disappears and and doesn't show up for some stretch until Benny Leonard gets crossed with her and DQed in the 13th against Jack Britton. 13th rd disappears for another decade, and then starts making more regular scattered showings.

Alas, R.I.P. 13th round, passed away from a broken heart after new regulations limiting fights to 12 rds. We didn't know you well, but you were legend in your fashion.

Dave 'Boy' Mcauley V Fidel Basa. Although I'm unsure of the oficial scoring I seem to remember Mcauley being ahead.
