I was there for this one, and I think Simmons was a bit lucky. Due to the antiquated and fucked up rules governing non european/world-title fights in this country, Simons was able to win due to an accidental clash of heads which opened James' eye up like a tin of beans.
Had the fight been outside of this country, where they have sensible laws governing such circumstances, James would have emerged with at least a draw.
The fight would have been a technical draw, or in some jurisdictions a no-contest, because less than 4 rounds were completed, therefore no scorecards would have been involved, and James would have retained his title.

thanks James.... you see how just reading the result can give you a completely wrong impression of a fight!!!!

I mean don't get me wrong, Symons was giving a good account of himself, and the fight was in the balance stilll, but he'd been decked in the second, and was looking increasingly tired. He did have success against James, but the impression I got was that James would ultimately have ridden the storm ands stopped him. He was much fresher and was blocking a lot of what was thrown.

before the fight thats how i thought it might go, a fired up Symonds starting off well but getting caught late on and stopped as he runs out of gas....
Symonds sells a lot of tickets so look for the Maloney hype machine to swing into full flow

I don't see any reason for complaint from Chas, people are just calling it as they saw it, there's nothing exactly inflammatory in these comments, certainly not any I've made.
Christ, surely we're allowed to express an opinion on fights without fear of hypersensitive egos. Fact is, it was a good fight, but it was certainly in the balance still at the point at which it was stopped. James was under pressure, but Symonds looked very tired, and as I said, under most other jurisdictions, the result would have been either a technical draw or no contest, presuming of course that the referee saw the clash of heads, which was unintentional, but did occur.

Yes, Symonds made it abundantly clear that he intended to fight a rematch, which is top form, and bloody good business sense, hopefully the fight will be televised this time, and these are precisely the kind of scraps which make for cracking TV, and they don't cost a bomb either. It's the sort of thing that in an ideal world the BBC would be able to pick up on.
Thanks for the report on this one. I really wanted to be there but was out of the country.
From your account the only fair course of action would be to hold a rematch as soon as Brett's cut is healed.
I gave Chas a chance of winning beforehand because of his strenth and frenetic attacks, but at the same time thought his lack of experience over 3 minute rounds may prove crucial down the stretch. I gym mate of Symmonds told me Chas leaves his training to last minute so was mindful of that too, this being his first 10 rounder.
Look forward to the rematch.

I just brought the tape of the show from Steve Holdsworth, even though I was there, I wanted to watch the fight again, you can't see the headbutt clearly but can see the cut happens without a punch being thrown.
Great tear up though.. If anyone wants a copy e-mail Steve Holdsworth on [email protected] and tell him Kev at BritishBoxing.net sent you.
A great card well worth the money...

James, I didn't mean it like that - I haven't seen the fight and of course I am greatful for your accurate (in fights that I have seen) assessments. I just thought it was quite odd that you were commenting on his fight just as Chas was joining up.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I don't see any reason for complaint from Chas, people are just calling it as they saw it, there's nothing exactly inflammatory in these comments, certainly not any I've made.

That is what forums are for, if a fighter cannot take any criticism (and not saying Chas can't) then really he's going to find it very hard in this sport.
