Backside!!!! Nate Campbell loses titles pon de scales

Post by DG. »

On the scales.

By Jason Kotar

WBO/IBF lightweight champion Nate Campbell initially weighed in at 138 lbs. for Saturday’s bout against Ali Funeka. He was given two hours to lose 3 lbs., but arrived back at the scale slightly after the two hours had expired. Campbell weighed 137.5 upon his return, and thus loses both titles. The bout will still take place, and if Funeka wins, he will claim the vacant title. Funeka weighed in 133.5 on the first try. Ironically, Campbell’s previous fight with Joan Guzman was cancelled when Guzman didn’t make weight.

Oh well.

It's a lightweight curse isn't it? Corrales-Castillo 2 and 3, Corrales-Casamayor 3, Guzman-Campbell, now Campbell-Funeka.

Yes. Funeka wins - gets the titles. Doesn't - two vacants.

I can imagine it being an interim fight... and I don't have a problem with that. Barrera could walk into a world title fight at any time. In some ways it would be more meaningful a title fight than Johnson vs Woods 1.

Doesn't look like Khan would qualify for the full belt...plus it would probably mean allegedly paying a bigger purse.

I wonder if this puts the fight in jeopordy then. Barrera could be offered a vacant world title fight to fulfil his dream.

If Khan is in the top 10 and Warren "has a good relationship with the WBO" then I recon it could be, however does Khan want his carrer to be hampered by manditories this early, I think he would be better (if he win's this) with a non title fight then chasing european honners. Would certainly be better for us fans.

Great fight and great card. Hopefully a TV company will pick it up on delay.

Come on mate, it's the WBO! If Amir gets it of course he's not going to have to fight a mandatory (unless the mandatory is a seventy-four year old semi-retired Venezuelan superbantamweight).

So a vacant WBO title. This must be just what the doctor ordered. Let's see what happens.

Barrera was at one point being mooted to challenge Campbell, so who knows he may have been about the creep up the ratings anyway.

So Warren has Khan, and if Khan wins that'll be a good event and get Khan ready for a vacant title fight vs Alex Arthur perhaps, cue more PPVs. And if it blows up in Khan's face, it looks like Warren may have Prescott, whose fight with Humberto Toledo this month I think has been blocked.

Have to wish for the Khan defeat if there's a prospect of fewer PPV fights on British TV. One defeat and I can't see justifying another Khan PPV fight. I wonder how many bad losses it would take for Hatton to be off PPV. (If both keep winning, perhaps a UK megafight some day?).
