Alfredo Angulo . . .
Just what I expected.
The scar tissue under both eye brows told me something, as I looked into his face.
Less than a round went by before he was bleeding. He cut in his last fight, too.
He's macho, will try to bull his way to a championship before the blood totally blinds him.
He's willing to take a punch, and he'll have no choice.
Today, they'll make sure he wins a title. Something like . . .
TWBOC Federal Grand National Super-Welterweight Northern Sierra Latin Championship of the World.
In ten years he'll still be fighting. He'll have more than eighty fights on his record, losing the last nine, seven by TKO.
He'll lose his license in California. Something about an MRI.
He might find work in T.J.
Another Palooka is still trying to fight down there. His name is Margarito?
They say he'll fight anybody, he once held a world title. Not doing well, kind of sad.
They shouldn't allow him to fight, but what the Hell, everybody's got a right to make a buck.
The year is 2017 . . . Angulo vs. Margarito in TJ. Sounds like a dream match.
I'll call Rog, see if he wants to drive across the border with me. Who better to see a fight with in TJ?
Roger will appreciate the irony.
Maria and Monica can go shopping, or do what women do.
After the fights, a quick stop off at the BOOM-BOOM Room, to discuss what we just saw.
"Man there was a lot of blood! They really shouldn't allow these guys to fight anymore."
What more can you say?

Rick---
These are the three fighters I spoke to you about. They were all from Mexico City and were famous fighters when I was just starting my boxing career. I saw all of them fight, but only on a black and white TV set that was in the little corner grocery store near my house in Guadalajara. And I had to pay the owner of the store 20 cents to watch the fights and had to sit on the floor with my back against the wall.
Alfredo "Canelo" Urbina---He was a heavy puncher with either hand and had a good style also.
Mauro Vasquez (Baby Face)---They called him Baby Face because he was a good looking guy. He hardly ever got hit in the face and his hair was never messed up. He was a very smart fighter.
Bernabe "Baby" Vasquez---He was not a very hard puncher but he boxed well and was fast. Also he was fighting everywhere, one fight after the other.
What can any of you readers tell me about them?

Re: Classic American West Coast Boxing
Rodolfo, I must plead ignorant to Mauro Vasquez. I never knew too much about him, but was impressed when looking up his record just now. Baby Vasquez seemed to be one of these guys with a 'have gloves will travel attitude', fighting everyone. Sadly, he passed away last August. Alfredo Urbina was a fighter I have researched over the years. This guy has to be one very underrated fighter. I never had the pleasure of seeing him fight like you did, but his results always astounded me. Wins over Jose Napoles, Eddie Perkins, Joe Brown, Chango Carmona and Lauro Salas, not to mention draws with Sugar Ramos and Carlos Hernandez -champions all- are staggering. Was there ever any mention of a fight between you and he ever discussed? Urbina passed away in 2002.El Gato wrote:Rick---

I saw Baby Vasquez fight in Tijuana at the Auditorium at the end of his career. Probably middle 60's. He was fascinating to watch. He was fighting a young up and coming fighter who ,I think, was from Tijuana. Vasquez had around a hundred fights. Like you say he couldn't punch very hard. He made this kid miss a lot,and then countered enough to win an easy decision. I wrote about this fight earlier in the thread.
Al Urbina beat Napoles the first time they fought. Urbina's body attack worked that night. After that I read in the Mexican press that Jose, when he fought him again, said he wasn't going to let Urbina get off to a good start. Wanted to finish him off real fast.

Mauro Vasquez

I seen Mauro Vasquez in some thrilling fights in L.A., anybody from my era will not forget his thrilling fights against some of the top fighters of the day, to name a few that I seen Vasquez fight live against.
Battling Torres
Cisco Andrade
Paul Armstead
Ike Chestnut
Gil Cadilli
And our friend Vince Delgado
There were other fights of Vasquez that I seen live.

Baby Vasquez

Another fighter that I seen fight live a few time, like Gato and Roger said, Baby was not a puncher, couldn't break an egg but, could he box? damn right he could, one of the best boxers of his time and that the reason he was able to fight some many fights.
Fighters that I seen Baby fight live against were,
Noel Humphreys
Paul Armstead
Mauro Vasquez
Jimmy Fields

Frank, I was reading an old article about Urbina's fight with Bunny Grant, where he lost a sqeaker down in Jamaica. After the fight he and his manager (his last name was Lopez) were saying they were robbed just like the Carlos Hernandez fight. Was the Hernandez fight that close?kikibalt wrote:Alfredo Urbina

I never had the opprtunity to see any of these boxers fight. As a kid, I would read about them often. I was particularly interested Alfredo Urbina, who I know whipped Jose Napoles in one of Mantequilla's early figts in Mexico. Baby Vasquez, and Mauro Vasquez, names I would read and try to visualize them in action from the writer's reports. To be honest, it's one of my few regrets, having not scene several of these great Mexican warriors in the gym. Whenever a Mexican stars would come to L.A. I made it a point to watch them in the gym. I learned a lot just watching guys like them train, not to mention the great entertainment.
