Danny Williams doesn't deserve a Tyson fight...
Someone help me understand what Danny Williams has done to merit a big fight with Mike Tyson! Looking at every one of Tyson's opponents since the Pete McNeeley fiasco in 1995, all of them have brought something to the table. Even Lou Savarese had chinned Buster Douglas, and Julius Francis was British and Commonwealth champion (and had beaten Danny).
But Danny brings nothing. Absolutely nothing. He was destroyed in a European title shot last year, lost his British and Commonwealth titles this year in a performance that merited calls for his retirement - and is clearly over the hill.
If Harry Mullan were alive today he would be slating the Board for allowing a faded Danny Williams to fight Mike Tyson whilst pulling a young unbeaten Gavin Rees out of a 'world' title shot.
Danny Williams doesn't deserve a Tyson fight. It needs to be said.

I agree DW brings nowt to the table, but did Neilsen (other than the hopes of a nation?) or Etienne? This is merely emblematic of the mentality (and lack of confidence) in the Tyson camp. He generates money against any old chancer, so why take risks with the golden goose.
At least Danny is an improvement on Kevin McBride. But then again so would Brian McBride be.
I'd love to have seen Skelton in there. Though again, that name would mean nothing globally.

Of course, but the $20-30m paydays are nothing but a memory now, just like Tysons endurance and boxing skills.buzz wrote:Oh I don't know, I bet this is PPV still.Kilburn wrote:Tyson doesn't bring as much to the table himself these days though. I think the McNeeley farce was a heckuva lot worse than this.

Skelton would last about 20 seconds with Tyson. He's way too open and green.deadpan wrote:I agree DW brings nowt to the table, but did Neilsen (other than the hopes of a nation?) or Etienne? The whole 'deserving a Tyson fight' is an oxymoron.
Does nobody get it. It is what you dont have not what you do have that gets fights with Tyson.
And since when is being British/Commonwelath champion a voucher of credibility whne we're talking about a top 20 heavyweight.
Julius Francis brought a crowd, british TV and no risk.
He got the fight.

It's all about making money for Tyson whilst pandering to his lack of confidence.
I don't think Tyson is too concerned with his Boxing reputation or his place in history anymore.
But I agree with your general point Tyson should be fighting a better opponent.
Is this true?007 wrote:Isnt it Skelton v Purrity next?
Not a bad match IMO.

What after being out of the ring for eighteen months and only having fought less than a round in nearly 2 and a half years.KOJOE90 wrote:Bingo! matebennie wrote:But Danny brings nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Williams is an acceptable opponent.
Remember, the oh so great Lennox Lewis once fought a guy named Justin Fortune.

But my thinking is Williams will freeze and get KO'd very early even by a faded Tyson, another quick win will do little for Tysons 'ring rust'. Although the money will help him!knockout artist wrote:What after being out of the ring for eighteen months and only having fought less than a round in nearly 2 and a half years.KOJOE90 wrote:Bingo! matebennie wrote:But Danny brings nothing. Yes Lennox did fight Furtune and got widely critisised for fighting an unknown Australian midgit Chef.

Yes but Harry slated the Laing/Duran match for the same reasons, and look what happened there. 8)bennie wrote:Someone help me understand what Danny Williams has done to merit a big fight with Mike Tyson! The Tyson camp are obviously looking for a no risk fight, and they think they've found one.
Hopefully Danny can give them a surprise. It's a long shot, but apart from Sam, no-one's ever blown Danny away - and maybe he just took Sam a little lightly? Which often seems to be a problem with him - no chance of him taking Tyson lightly.
I agree, Danny doesn't deserve this fight - but neither did McNelley, Etteine and Neilson. Lets not forget, Mike Tyson is now just a contendor who hasn't fought in a year.
Would a thread have gone up if Howard Eastman gets an injury doesn't fight for a year and then takes on Farnell - exactly the same scenerio - a world class contendor taking on an exposed but solid domestic fighter.

I'm not sure if it's about "deserving" a Tyson fight. Tyson, after all holds no title and the only beneficial thing for Williams is the biggest purse of career (I would guess). To earn that he will get KTFO.
I agree that Tyson's handlers should be more ambitious in his choice of opponent but that's a measure of how far he's fallen.

Tyson has had precisley 49 seconds of fighting since 2002, and has nothing but his tattered reputation.
Williams has at least been active in recent times, despite his flaws he is an active boxer who arguably still has some hunger for the sport.
Tyson is a broke former champion looking for a few quick paydays before he retires.
Williams in my opinion has as much right as anyone else.

I think Tyson's people have made a decent match really.
While I don't think DW will last long, he is, at least, an active heavyweight, though not in the same class as Tyson.
Williams seems like a decent guy and will give it a good shot. Tyson's trainers will hope it goes a few rounds and DW is capable of that until he gets knackered and Tyson catches up with him
After a year out and after having thrown about 3 worthwhile punches in the last 5 years, this is a decent tune up for a man who has only had 20 ish rounds under his belt since 1997.
From DW's POV, he will cling onto the fact that every fit, live, active heavy Tyson has faced has given him trouble. DW is, at least 2 out of three.

I'm with that man. 'Deserve' a Tyson match? You 'deserve' a title shot, but Tyson is a circus and as such there are no fast rules about opponents. It's a lucky dip.
