When it first happened, i thought it would hinder Benitez, because it looked like the blood could flow into either or both eyes.
From what i saw, i don't think that the cut was a huge factor, Leonard dominated with his jab, although i think Wilfred had a faster one, when he used it. I got the impression that Leonard was just too strong physically. When Benitez countered he had some success in the mid stages, but when Leonard stood with him he always came out on top - Leonard's speed of combinations.

- He looked impressive against 23 yr old Ossie Jaws Ocasio, 13-0. I watched this week as Holmes felt out the awkward Ocasio and drops the hammer the last few rounds, 7 TKO.

Unfortunately Ossie proved his class, going 10-13 after this bout.

Watched Tiger get robbed in the Griffith rematch, same old news. Tony Ayala feel out and then blast out Angie Dundee trained Steve Gregory.

Louis/Primo, a very good fight, /Buddy Baer 1/2, very good, /Tami Mauriello, short but sweet after Tami rocks Joe in the opening seconds.

Last but not least Funeka/Campbell, a pretty good fight with the weight controversy as a dramatic backstop.

Tyson vs Williams, a terrible break for Mike, wrecking his leg like that after such a great start. Probably a long time injury he managed by not running for years.

Joe Louis/Lee Savold compilation. Really enjoy watching the older stiff legged more boxing oriented style Louis adopted in his old age.

Joe Frazier/Stander, a very underrated classic in Nebraska. Just the midwestern seersucker suits by the announcers and the wild outfit by Chuvalo as a guest commentator, it was the 70s afterall, was a bonus on top of a full blown action packed bout between two bulls. Stander won the first two, Joe the last two, but Stander was always in the bout and much stronger than Joe was. He never quit firing punches and finally got the plug pulled on cuts.

Then I watched a compilation of Freddie Welsh/Packy McFarland. Freddie has some good skills but McFarland was was the original energizer bunny. 20 rd draw, but Packy won most every min of what I say, great offensive skills and energy like Calzaghe.

Rex Layne/Bob Satterfield. Layne was as tough as they come, a very underrated win for Rocky as Satterfield really took it to him in a great slugfest.

I agree with this 100%. Stander was under-rated and over looked.

Rooney-Moore- Rooney always seems stiff to me.

-Roberto's best fight bar none. He really took it to the big man and relished it as much as he did his steak dinners.

I was watching the Hagler fight last night and can see how great both truly were. Hagler was in his prime and Duran goes right at him, only occasionally backing off. If Hagler had slacked off in training, he might have been in some trouble. Leonard could never fight like that and had to take flight against a much slower battleworn Hagler.

Speaking of good little guys, I finished Arch Moore, 175, against Embrel Davidson, 210, and built like a Mack Truck. Moore boxed as he usually did, relaxed, grappling a bit, picking his shots. Davidson starts finding the range for his left hook and lands a left-right hook combo on Arch who moves around him to his right. Embrel throws another left hook and (((BooM))), Arch's right hand detonates and he drops like a sack of rocks, completely out, 1st rd KO.

Davidson KOed Marty Marshall twice, once before and after this bout. Marshall later won a split over Liston after breaking his jaw and went the distance in the rubber, lasting 2 of 3, so Embrell could crack. What a work of art the ol Mongoose was.

The last fight I watched was Danny Lopez vs Roberto Castanon, it was a two round slugfest and Castanon really showed how brave he was against a man who was much bigger and better, it was really Little Red at his rip roaring best.

Round Seven of Liston going up against George Scrap Iron Johnson; he took alot of punishment and he gave Frazier problems, but imo, he wasnt half the stuff Bigfoot Martin was made of.

Holyfield/Lewis v Mercer. Really enjoyed both fights. Admire the way Holyfield pulled it out when he really needed to turn the fight.
Lewis was frustrating to watch against Mercer. When he let his hands go he was landing some brilliant combo's, I mean really jaw dropping ATG quality bunches. But he spent long spells just being totally non-aggressive. And Mercer being Mercer, made it a real fight. Also noticed that when Lewis went on the offensive and was made to miss he finished up totally off balance and out of position (backed up on the ropes) several times. Obviously he corrected the flaw against Holyfield (i think, have to re-watch now), but against Rahman (complacency?) he lapsed.

Lewis v Tyson - Tyson looked really lively in round one. I let myself believe that he showed up for a payday, knowing he was washed up and had no chance. He really gave it his best shot, took his beating like a man and went home quietly. Credit to both guys.

Tyson v Douglas - first time i watched it in 18 years, WOW. I never saw the HBO version before and the interview with Larry mechant after the fight was the most emotional I have ever got watching a fight. I cried

I would like to call out whoever it was who said Mercer was robbed. I distinctly remember reading such a comment very recently on this board. Please justify!

- I said Holmes didn't beat Mercer, not even close. Not a robbery because Mercer was more interested in acting like a lazy thug. He POed the judges.

He almost broke Holmes' neck after choking him out. He was lazy though, and more interested in trapping him in the corner and then slapping him with little taps. Holmes was feisty, but he spent most of the time illegally grabbing the ropes which he started doing late in his title days as his legs went, and backed to the ropes. Mercer could've imposed his considerable strength advantage over Holmes, but probably wasn't in first rate shape and chose to coast.

At any rate, it was the only significant bout Holmes won in his comeback. He was literally the 250lb weakling of the division.
