Competitive one-round fights

Post by oliverfennell »

On the back of Holt-Torres 2, what other fights ended inside the first round but were highly competitive while they lasted?

Benn-Barkley springs to mind. Any others?

I don't personally know of any. But that Holt - Torres fight was crazy. For me, not knowing any other fights that swung so much in such a short time is part of what makes Holt - Torres so unbelievable.

From the Old Timers, Fitz-Maher was apparently a good fight while it lasted.

Gannon-Carter featured a couple of knockdowns/staggerings either way before Gannon was (somewhat questionably) stopped on his feet. I believe there was also a point deduction somewhere in the mix as well. Gannon came back in a rematch and outclassed Carter, stopping him in about 5 or 6 rounds.

DePaula came out swinging against Foster and got credit for a flash knockdown, which Foster disputed. Foster than fired back and scored three flash knockdowns of his own in quick succession, which forced an automatic stoppage.

Don't know a damn thing about Fitz-Maher, except it ended with Maher out cold.

Here is a discription of the fight from the NYTimes (2-22-1896) describing the fight:

Image

Another account that I've read (I don't have a copy) indicates that Fitz was more than a "bit bothered" by Maher's right; Maher landed hard and seemed to really rattle Fitz. Whether Fitz was hurt or playing possum isn't clear, but he kayoed Maher as the latter was moving in for the kill.

Apols I've just watched it again myself...from memory I thought the winner got put down quite heavily too and got up to win but that wasn't actually what happened. My mistake!!

Isn't every fight competitive for one round, pretty much?

Springing from mind, Roy Jones versus Reggie Johnson wasn't competitive for even five seconds. Dude landed less than 50 punches in a twelve round fight.

Coetzee/Spinks was competitive as long as Leon was swinging for the fences in his bull rush.

Never landed anything, but Coetzee is having fits trying to establish punching distance. The famous short bionic right hand across the ear slows up Leon to a walk, and the bells do toll for him not long after, but not before Leon previews the soon to be appearing decades later Judah Chicken Walk.
