HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
Ok....the supreme 'alien' council has sought out a mix of the
'worse' fighters ever to challenge for the title. They did their
best to narrow it down to 16 men. The most undeserving as
such.
Men who were considered but did not make the 'cut' were :
Al McCoy, Abe Simon, Jimmy Darcy (was he a title challenge
or exhibition?"), Scott LeDoux, Richard Dunn, Marvis Frazier,
Lorenzo Zannon, Jesse Fergusson, Jack Roper...
The 16 men....
12 rounds, no 3 knock down
Scott Frank (211lbs) Vs Jewey Smith (183lbs)
Joe Kennedy (195lbs) Vs Pete Rademacher (202lbs)
Jim O'brien (176lbs) Vs Brian London (206lbs)
Tony Ross (214lbs) Vs Harry Thomas (196lbs)
James J Walker (178lbs) Vs Johnny Davis (190lbs)
Jack Roper (190lbs) Vs Jean Pierre Coopman (206lbs)
Alfredo Evangelista (209lbs) Vs Terry Daniels (195lbs)
Leon Spinks (197lbs) Vs Ron Stander (218lbs)
The first night of fights will commence in a few days, all men have
adjusted to being 'transported' from before their title challenge..so
all are in good shape.
How do you see it lads..

Joe Kennedy never fought for the title. His match on September 24, 1901 at the Reliance Club in Oakland with Jim Jeffries was a four-round match in which Kennedy would win a prize for staying all four rounds with Jeff. Jeff stopped him in two. Kennedy then became Jeff's sparring partner for his upcoming bout with Gus Ruhlin.Robinson wrote:Ok....the supreme 'alien' council has sought out a mix of the

- You were already corrected on the Joe Kennedy challenger status, so you need a sub.Robinson wrote: How do you see it lads..
Since you have Leon in there, and he beats Ali who challenges in the return, you have to say that Ali must have been worse than Leon at this point in time. Leon can barely be found to train for the rematch, yet it's less than comprehensive or even debatable that Ali truly whups Leon. He certainly can't keep Leon off of him, so you have to include Ali, unless you are unable to withstand the outrages that would follow.
I see Tony Ross/JP Coopman as the easiest to beat and my hands down pick for the softest touch.
Alfredo is the toughest nut here.
Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
I can go before the fight commitee with those proposals.
1978 Ali or even 1980 Ali as a challenger.
Joe Kennedy fight was a non title fight..?

Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
To include Arturo Godoy as one of the 'worst' challengers is pretty ridiculous . . .
There is quite a disparity between some fighters here.

Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
He was included because he got his title shot (the first one)
going in with a loss prior, as did Abe Simon.
It was decided by a committee so while I agree with you
my say was not the final one.
These 'aliens' have their own agenda when setting up
these tourny's.

I dig the twist here, but to be honest there are far worse fighters who fought for the heavyweight title.Robinson wrote:Ok....the supreme 'alien' council has sought out a mix of the

Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
If going into a title fight with a loss qualifies a boxer for this tournament, George Chuvalo would have to be on the list. He "earned" his first title shot with a loss to Eduardo Corletti. He had lost 2 of 3 before getting his shot at the title.
Of all the title contenders I have seen, no one comes close to Jean Pierre Coopman for being inept. I haven't seen that fight since it happened, but from memory Coopman might be the worst fighter to ever fight on national television. Prime vs. prime, Coopman vs. Gastineau might be a good one.

who are the fighters you suggest ?
Galt,
Chuvalo was eliminated in a previous tourny....but going into a
title shot off a loss never makes sense to me unless it is say
a returning 'legend' who has already done a lot prior...Ali, Holmes
etc...

Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
It may not make sense, but it doesn't automatically make that guy one of the 'worst' challengers . . .tons of absolute dogshit undefeateds in recent years who got title shots who should've never been near a heavyweight belt . . .Jorge Luis Gonzales, Ed Mahone . . .looks like soon to be title challenging Chris Arreola, who would def. be near the top of the list if he gets one. He makes Ron Stander look like Willie Pep.Robinson wrote:pound per pound

And Godoy was Dq'd in his fight before Louis, it's not like he was soundly beaten. And Godoy gave such a good account of himself vs an all-time great fighter he got an immediate rematch. If you're looking at the Louis era, you have to turn to Roper, never beat any top ranked fighters and lasted about 2 minutes in the fight.
Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
For you DF....
Godoy is out of this tourny and in a new one....
The things I do for you......the committee was reasonable
and were happy with the changes. We had a bit of time to
play with anyhow.

Oh boy. Some bad ones were some of the fighters Burns gave title shots to, a few of Jack Johnson's title opponents, a select few bum of the month guys from Joe Louis, a few from Patterson, a few from Ali, and too many bad alphabet title bout " opponents " to mention.
A few names? Jewey Smith who fought Tommy Burns, Ross who fought Jack Johnson, Battling Jim Johnson who fought Jack Johnson, McNeeley who fought Floyd Patterson, Brian London who fought Ali, Ferguson who fought Bowe. There are tons of them.
Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
Brian London and Jewey Smith are in the tourny...

that were taken into consideration...

Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
If you had Jack Root, Bill Squires, Jack Finnegan (some dispute this as being a real heavyweight title bout), and maybe Jem Roche...you'd have a better list...
Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
I think we are going to need a 32 man mega tournament !
Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
32 man tourny will be up in a day or two...

Re: HW mythic tournament 5- worse title challengers
Is "Jim" O'Brien a challenger? Is he being confused with Philadelphia Jack O'Brien? No way Philadelphia Jack O'Brien should be in there.
Not sure how Spinks is here. Doesn't how the guy fought in the title fight count?
No Johnny Paycheck? He is usually one of the first guys I think of.
Tom McNeely probably also be there.
I'm assuming we aren't counting all the stiffs who have fought for alphabet soup title in the last 10 years or so.
Btw, how does this tournament work? Do the losers advance?![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Jim Obrien that faced Tommy Burns.
http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer
And not the great Jack O'brien.
I left the ABC guys out...otherwise it would get too confusing.
Spinks is here because he may have a chance at winning...
imagine him in a tourny of champions.
