John Fewkes: Glyn, Gethin and my supposed drink problem

Post by dbflex »

Fewkes talks about the failure to make weight, the loss to Martin Gethin, his fall-out with trainer Glyn Rhodes and why he hasn't been back yet.

As usual all feedback (on our site or on here) is welcome.

Sounds as if its going to be hard for him to get back to top form, its a shame that he can't go full time as a boxer, but everyone is feeling the squeeze financially.

Good honest interview from John, sounds like he needs to get himself in the gym and buckle down, but it's gonna be tough for him if he's got to work for a living as well as train. Johns exciting to watch and he's in a stacked British division at the mo, so there are plenty of BIG fights (and opportunities) out there for him.

He was refreshing to interview – open, honest and did not refuse to talk about any subject.

Thanks Flex, good interview. Fewkes definitely didn't look right in the Gethin loss - I feel at his best he'd box rings around Gethin. I was really impressed with him against Watson and Tontchev. If he can get some financial backing, get training and get back to that form, he'd be a handful for anyone at domestic and Euro level.

It appears boxrec has become a dating website! Lol, what about Fewkes? Anyone else read the article and have any views? Anyone hate it? (I can take it)

I thoguht it was a good interview -very open.I like your interviewing style as well -you seem to get quite a bit of info out your interviewees.

He's got talent, John Fewkes. I first became aware of him when he beat my old flatmate/gym mate, Tony Montana a few years ago -no mean feat, as Tony was very hard to hit.

I sicnerelt hope he gets to fight regularly and sorts his weight out (which will happen if he fights regularly). I think he can pick up some good wins along the way.

just to throw a slightly negative comment in, I'm not keen on fighters saying 'I had to work a fulltime job and training is hard' or words to that effect, when the guy who beat them (Gethin in this case) is in exactly the same situation.

good interview though cheers :TU:

on a pro-Gethin level i was going to rant about boxers and excuses. then i saw a piece on bbn where Martin says he had flu vs Lawton and thought he was winning......

anyway i hope he beats John Watson- anyone know much about Watson???

Not really, should be a good scrap. Lawton might feel he should have got an elimination chance or something though seen as he beat Gethin; or am I missing something?

It would be fantastic to see Fewkey get back to his best - although I have got to say I think there are limitations on how far he can go - British title definitely and maybe a European title shot - but quite simply he has to live that life and stop f*cking around - he has a bloody good trainer and should start listening to him!!!

It is common Knowledge around Sheffield that Fewkes is a top piss head. The truth is he was getting away with it for so long and it all caught up with him when fighting Gethin.Glynn fell out with Fewkes because he was on the piss while training for the fight its as simple as that.

Well, if this is true then no-wonder things have caught up with John. Fighters competing at a lower level than Fewkes do not drink when in training, so its amazing to even think John was doing that while in training, but if he was, he was!

Let's hope for his sake he's no learned from this.
