Macale Merton

This man went undefeated for 30 years as a bare knuckle fighter, but at the age of 51 he decided to turn pro and take on MARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER for the middleweight title. He was stopped dead in his tracks by the commissions at the time, though he passed medical tests, because he was "too old" at 51 years of age.

I remember watching that clip .
It was in the late seventies early eighties.
I was fighting amateur at the time.It looked to me back then like that guy never had a fight in his life.
It still looks that way.
At this particular time there were two forty and fifty something fighters who were active and were decent.
Bobby Halpern was one of them.So was Dr. Herbert Odom from here in Chicago .
This Merton guy could have obtained a liscence if he wanted to.Halpern was liscensed in New York, Odom in Illinois.
Either one of the guys I mentioned would have torn that guy to pieces.

That was a good PR film, nothing more.

The BS sparring, running up stairs, a few exercises, jogging next to a peddle bike, and watching old fight films and fantasizing on what he should and shouldn't do in the ring is one thing......but...........well it looks good for the little video, but it doesn't mean you can go with the MW champion of the world or deserve a title shot.

Hagler would have eaten him up and spit him out. :TU:

Did I just say that? :surprised:
