Boxrec Hall of Fame Voting Results (February 2009)
The results are in.
For the first time no fighter received the 75% vote total which insures election. So, we have to refer the rule which states that the fighter(s) with the most votes are elected.
Jack Britton,Ted Kid Lewis,Lloyd Marshall,Philadelphia Jack O'Brien,Holman Williams and Tony Zale all had tied for the most votes (9) and therefore all are elected.
A complete run rundown will be coming soon.

I know how you feel. I voted for the legendary Bert Gilroy but, as usual, there was an English-led conspiracy to deny Scotland's best big fighting man his rightful place in the pantheon.NumberOneBigDog wrote:wow those are some obscure names....hall of fame? please.
Shame!

Re: Boxrec Hall of Fame Voting Results (February 2009)
Hehe, I deliberately removed Ted Lewis from my own list, so that he would have one less vote and allow Marshall and Zale to get in.
D
Wait... does that constitute voter fraud?

Yeah, it's not like they're also in the official Hall of Fame or anything...NumberOneBigDog wrote:wow those are some obscure names....hall of fame? please.

you have to be kidding. these are no names. You need to read up and get the big names of the sport. Zale is about the only name on that list worth considering.
Re: Boxrec Hall of Fame Voting Results (February 2009)
Go up higher on the page and look at the BoxRec Hall Of Fame. We've selected 79 fighters already I believe. This was just the latest round. Still, there records are nothing to sneeze at.
Re: Boxrec Hall of Fame Voting Results (February 2009)
Dude, most of them are already in the official HOF, and have been for quite some time. They're about as far from "no names" as you can get.NumberOneBigDog wrote:you have to be kidding. these are no names. You need to read up and get the big names of the sport. He's the type that thinks Tyson is the best heavyweight ever.

Thanks to Alp again for organising the HOF ballot.
Always a fun exercise. Also always gives me a chance to look through other people's thoughts.

Re: Boxrec Hall of Fame Voting Results (February 2009)
We had to make this rule. It's a complete waste of time to do this if we aren't going to elect anyone.
Overall, the Hall of Fame has gone well. So far, the selections have been good and there has been much less bias in regard to eras, weight classes etc. than I thought there would be.
Of course everyone has their fighters that they can't believe keep getting passed over, but that is to be expected.
I have been thinking of how to improve things for a long time. I finally have come up with a solution that is fairly simple and will address all of these problems.
In the next election, voters will have to vote for a minimum of 15 fighters from a list of the fighters who were on at least 2 of the ballots of this past election.(And of course didn't get elected.)
What this will do? It will address the following problems:
1. Problem-No one got 75%. (Only one fighter did the previous election.) It may be a while before anyone does again.
It will increase the chances of fighters getting 75% of the votes because votes won't be "wasted" for guys who have no chance.
2.4. "Small" ballots-some people don't vote for 25 people. That hurts the % of every fighter not on the that ballot.
With the new system everyone will have to vote for 15 fighters. And they can't just name a few serious candidates and a bunch of "joke" candidates. They will be picking from a list of only the fighters who got at least 2 votes in the previous election.
Again, this increases the chances of fighters making 75%.
3. When no one is going to get 75%, that means the fighter(s) with the most votes get elected. This increases the chances of "flukes", like this past election where 6 guys tied for first. For example, I voted for all 6 except for Tony Zale. Had I voted for Zale, he would have had 1 more vote than everyone else and would have been the only fighter elected.
This will be less likely to happen with the new system since hopefully fighters will be making the 75 barrier again and we won't have to rely on who had the most votes.
4. Takes too long-From a personal point of view, it's taking too long to compile the results. In the last election, I had to count the # of votes for 112 different fighters. It gets longer each election.
In the next election I will only have to count 62. (Thats the number of fighters who were on at least 2 ballots but weren't elected.)
By weeding out all the fighters who only got 1 vote (44 this past election) it will take me much less time next time.
-The only exception to the rule will be any fighters who have reached the 10 year retirement requirement for the first time.
We will alternate this every other election with the way that we have been doing it.
It might sound complicated but it's really not.
In a way it will actually be easier to vote; you will get a list of fighters to choose from and vote.
Let me know if anyone has any questions. I will also review this in 3 months when it's time for another election.

Re: Boxrec Hall of Fame Voting Results (February 2009)
Why not add the possibility for each voter to pick 1-2 fighters who didn't get 2 votes in the previous election, that'd be a maximum of 14 or 28 new fighters to count (with 14 voters last time), but they'd get a chance either to get elected this time or to participate in the next vote. At the same time drop the fighters from the list who didn't get at least 2 votes after each election, why keep all 62 if they don't get anyone voting for them.

Re: Boxrec Hall of Fame Voting Results (February 2009)
Well, that would be better than what we have been doing, but not as good of a plan as I mentioned.
If people could vote for 1-2 fighters that didn't get votes, that still could cut into other fighters chances of making it. Fighters miss being elected by one or 2 votes every time, so that can make a difference.
There would be less fighters to count than there has been but more than the plan that I mentioned.
Besides, a fighter who received zero votes last time chances of being elected the next time is very remote.
And we will only do the plan that I mentioned every other time. Fighters who haven't got any votes (or just one) can still be eligible every other time.

Now if you would have said Professor Irwin Corey I might have thought you less vacuous of the ability to perform comical analytical theorizing.
Now do share with us an "aborginal" musing or two.....Sir Collins.

I have no problem with the rule or how this resulted. All were deserving and going to get in sooner or later, so what's the problem?
Alp's solution for the next tournament is fine, but after that I'd like to not restrict to names to those that were on two other ballots. It's always good to inject some fresh blood and fresh ideas. There are always guys we may have overlooked.

I'm absolutely in agreement with you!
But there is a trouble, a very big trouble in this elections: only few boys knows the South American boxing past, and, of course, greatest fighters like Jose Carattoli, Jorge Fernandez, Justo Suarez, Eduardo Lausse, Rafael Merentino and many others, had no chances for to be included
