Ali and Chuvalo.
I wouldn't put Mercer along the lines of those two b/c even as old men Ali and George were never knocked down, and Mercer was down against Holy in his prime as well (I know it was a body shot but it goes along with the whole toughness argument).

McCall is probably up there as well but what punchers other then Lewis and Bruno did he ever face???

I would not count Ali. Great chin, but two knockdowns I can think of ( Cooper and Frazier )

Chuvalo definitely

Ali got up from both those KDs. Frazier and Foreman knocked Chuvalo OUT. (Of course the fact that Chuvalo was easier to hit than Ali probably had something to do with that, but that's more subjective than just looking at KDs and KOs.)

But both had outstanding beards.

Chuvalo was never knocked out, or even down. The Frazier fight was a stoppage on a horrible eye gash and against Forman he was stopped on his feet. Chuvalo was only ever hurt against George, who's one of the top 3 hardest punchers of all time.

Without a doubt, has to be Ali. Over his career he has to have taken the most poundings than any other heavywieght. That was the main reason
he won most of his fights. Especially the big shots he's taken.

If Chuvalo ever fought like Earnie Shavers, the hardest puncher ever, then Shavers would be the only man to ever knockdown Chuvalo and most of all knock him down.

McCall or Mercer.
Wasn't McCall supposed to have been fired from being Tyson's sparring partner because Tyson couldn't hurt or dominate him? I heard that but I have no idea if it's true or even if they ever sparred together for a fact.

Tyson should get a mention in his own right, he has a fantastic chin.

Ali. You don't need a better chin than that.

That's what I've always thought but I've seen on some other web-sites by some knowledglable posters that claim Oscar Bonavena may have scored a knockdown over Chuvalo, but very few people seem to have seen the fight.

Holmes deserves a mention. If he did get knocked down a few times, his powers of recovery were second to none vis a vis the Shavers fight. Depends how you judge chin I suppose....

They didn't knock Chuvalo out. Frazier stopped Chuvalo on a badly cut eye and a broken orbital bone, and Foreman stopped him by backing him into a corner and throwing a huge barrage of punches at him until Chuvalo's wife threw her purse into the ring.

In other words, Chuvalo was never actually knocked out or even down in 98 professional fights.

Chuvalo gets my vote for the best chin in the last 30 years.

Chuvalo definitely

Sonny Banks also scored a knockdown over a young Ali, he was also dropped as an Amatuer by a fighter who's name I cant recall (Hudson?) although Ali got up to win in both cases

Ali was also stopped as an Amatuer when he was about 15 by Kent Green although I think he was stopped on his feet by a much older fighter in that fight.

Still had one of the very best chins I've seen on a heavyweight.

Top three chins at heavyweight IMHO are...
3. George Foreman. Surprised to see he wasn't mentioned. Young & Ali notwithstanding. Even as an older man the younger fighters couldn't knock him down, had to outbox him (ie Morrison, Briggs, etc.)
2. Vitali Klitschko. I think Vitali has a great chin. 36 fights and he has not had so much as a standing 8 count. Did not fall vs. Lennox or Sanders (a little bit stunned though). Maybe voting Klitschko up this high is too early, we'll see.
1. George Chuvalo stood up to Ali, Ellis, Foreman, Mathis, Frazier, Bonavena and Terrell. He lost to each one of them but they never knocked him down, let alone out.

Chuvalo-Bonavena

Post by klompton »

Bonavena dropped Chuvalo twice. The first was somewhat questionable but the second was definately legit. Arthur Mercante blew the call on both, one of the few times Ive seen him screw up. I have the film of that fight.

I would say Oliver McCall must be up there, Has he ever been floored?

one of the best displays of taking a punch has to be Ray Mercer in his match with Tommy Morrison, some of those left hooks he took would have floored alot of other heavies
