Rendall Monroe's next defence- quality bill lined up

Post by whicker »

Rendall Monroe's next fight looks to be supported by a cracking undercard- two title fights and some well matched bouts too. Tickets are £35 general admission, and £75 ringside.

http://www.frankmaloney.com/News/news/1481.html

Should eb a really close one again- I'd say Kiko might just have the edge this time.

In the chief support to the Rendall Munroe-Kiko Martinez rematch later this month in Barnsley, perennial Nigerian threat Ajose Olusegun defends his Commonwealth light-welterweight title against Derby's "Super" Scott Haywood.
Olusegun has won all 25 contests since turning pro in 2001 but the slick, stiff-hitting, 29-year-old southpaw is probably too good for his own good and, even fighting out of London and ranked No. 3 by the WBC, struggles for work.
Credit then to Haywood for stepping up to the plate. The tall challenger earned his chance when he edged out Wolverhampton’s previously unbeaten Dean Harrison over 10 rounds for the English light-welterweight title last September. Flashy Scott brings workrate and plenty of boxing skills, although he lacks real power and has conceded to a couple of opponents (both on points). Haywood, 19-2 (4), is going for it here at the age of 27 and looks capable enough to go the full 12 rounds but not to better a man like Olusegun.

If Ajose's such a world-class talent, why is he bothering with someone like Scott Haywood? It's just a really, really pointless fight.

Wasn't this the guy who was calling out Hatton and Witter not too long ago?

Jez Wilson against Conception should be a cracker. Really looking forward to that one. Anyone going? I should be covering the show for BBN.

Jim,

Long time no see.

I would have gone to Glyn's last show but had trouble with trains. I'll be in Barnsley that night though.

I think Jez can take Conception. Ross against McFayden should be a good one as well.

I've just been looking at the odds on this fight and Skybet have got Martinez as 50/1 to win by KO in the first, 40/1 for the second and 33/1 for the third. I like Munroe and hope he wins, but I think these are very generous odds considering how Kiko fights (15 of his 20 fights have ended in first 4 rounds), I've had to have a lickle tipple on that, so you're probably best steering well clear

I don't like to say this but I wouldn't be surprised to see Munroe blown away in two rounds. He hasn't been convincing since the first Martinez fight, and has been wobbled and been very easy to hit by men who shouldn't trouble him. I hope I am wrong though.

I bet Munroe is pissed off that Bernard Dunne is getting a world title fight first, while he has to make do with defending that EBU strap.

No his not we could has made that fight next for Munroe but we are not in the fight game just to make fights, When Munroe fights for the world title it will be when his team believe we can win it and make a few denf. not just to say, He boxed for a world title. Please tell us were Dunne goes from here after he say well i did fight for the world title. Maybe Munroe will take him for a final denf. of his EU title before becoming the NEW WORLD CHAMP.

Yeah. Right. I suppose it must be hard to get a world title fight when you can only sell 2000 tickets in Barnsley when Dunne can get 12000 at the o2 in Dublin.

Its a shame Sky will not allocate 3 hours for this bill.... great little domestic card. Top 3 on the bill are better than the main events of a our favourite promoter. For me, toughest fight to call, and the potential show stealer, is Buckland vs Docherty.

In the chief support perennial Nigerian threat Ajose Olusegun defends his Commonwealth light-welterweight title against Derby's "Super" Scott Haywood.
Olusegun has won all 25 of his contests since turning pro in 2001 but the 29-year-old southpaw is too good for his own good and a lofty No. 3 ranking with the WBC just exarcebates his "Who needs him?" reputation. He won the title with one-sided decision over Stoke strongman Gary Reid in London in 2007 and regained against Crook bogeyman Nigel Wright.
Credit then to Haywood for taking him on. The 27-year-old secured his shot when he outscored previously unbeaten Wolverhamption brickie Dean Harrison for the English light-welterweight title in Nottingham last September, although it was tight, and he brings height, reach and good boxing skills to any of his fights. In 21 Haywood has lost only to tricky Sheffield man Tony Montana and Sheffield fireball John Fewkes, both on points, but is now on a winning run of seven.
While there is always a chance the talented, ambitious, hardworking Haywood could surprise a demotivated Olusegun, the champion is much the harder puncher and that power will surely tell over 12 rounds.

Southpaw hope Paul McCloskey defends his British light-welterweight title against former holder Barry Morrison in a cracking Ireland v Scotland showdown in the rather incongruous setting of Widnes on March 13.
McCloskey, an unbeaten but previously unheralded fighter from Dungiven in Northern Ireland, proved a revelation in winning the title against Dagenham’s established Colin Lynes late last year in Dagenham. McCloskey took the fight at a week’s notice for an indisposed David Barnes and was given no chance against a renowned stylist who had once held Junior Witter to a close 12-round decision and had just lost the European light-welterweight title on a robbery of a split decision to Gianluca Branco in Italy; nevertheless, after a slow start, McCloskey proved much the stronger, quicker, more unorthodox, more effective man, and finally forced Lynes, the best domestic left-jabber since Howard Winstone, to sit it out at the end of the ninth round, spent, bemused, beaten. The new champion, a former top amateur with solid pro wins over the likes of Nigel Wright and Cesar Bazan, looks one to watch. This is McCloskey’s first defence.
To Morrison, outpointed by Lynes on a unanimous 12-round decision in Scotland in 2007. One would assume, then, that the Motherwell mauler is headed for defeat here but styles make fights - look at Antonio Margarito’s fabulous win over Miguel Cotto, who had licked Shane Mosley.
“Braveheart” Barry is not in their league but can undoubtedly fight and won the British title (the first Scot to raise the light-welterweight belt proudly aloft) with an aggressive, hardworking decision over useful Londoner Lenny Daws – another man to have stopped Lynes in nine rounds – but then dropped it to Lynes, who in turn relinquished it to concentrate on the European scene. Once upon a time fighters never unbuckled the wonderful Lonsdale Belt till it was theirs for good but money, television money, talks.
A lot of those fighters spend the rest of their lives wishing otherwise.
Anyway, the tough, gritty Morrison secured a second stab at the British title last year and was outscored in a rather tame affair by the talented Barnes, a slippery southpaw like McCloskey, although McCloskey is slippery in a more aggressive way. This leads me to believe that Morrison – that both men - will have his moments an exciting, flowing affair. McCloskey is not easy to nail, with good reflexes, and he possesses the kind of strength and power that makes him difficult to tame but Morrison has never been stopped and we can expect a real thriller.

New IBF cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek makes a quick first defence against unbeaten Kronk man Jon Banks in Newark on February 27.
Adamek won the title in December in Newark (where he now lives) with a thrilling and gruelling split decision over Philadelphia's Steve Cunningham. The transplanted Pole was hurt several times and also dished out the hurt and it is surprising to see him back in the ring so soon against a 'live', young challenger like Banks, the Detroiter who was lined up to fight Enzo Maccarinelli in London late last year before he pulled out with an ankle injury.
Banks has a marketable 20-0 (14) record, the great Manny Steward in his corner and clearly his choice of 'name' opponents. He must be able to fight, but Adamek can also fight at 36-1 (24). The champion's only defeat came on points to the slick Chad Dawson down at light-heavyweight - and he had Dawson on the floor.
Yes, Banks is six years the younger man at 26 but home advantage for Adamek levels the balance, and his great experience then tilts it his way. While you wonder about Adamek's freshness, he must be favoured to come through another thriller.

Slick Canadian star Lucian Bute defends his IBF super-middleweight title against Colombia's rugged Fulgencio Zuniga at the Bell Centre in Montreal on March 13.
Southpaw Bute, an obvious rival to WBC super-middleweight kingpin Carl Froch, is unbeaten in 23 paid fights and looked like a potential pound-for-pounder when he won the title in 2007 with a chilling 11-round stoppage of another rugged Colombian, Alejandro Berrio, and picked off American veteran William Joppy for 10 rounds in a defence last year. Then came Mexican threat Librado Andrade, who floored Bute in the dying seconds of their 12-rounder in Montreal in October and may even have stopped the champion but for a blatant piece of hometown refereeing from Canadian Marlon Wright. The third man delayed his count, after an exhausted Bute had staggered up, and made a prolonged show of ordering Andrade into a neutral corner. The bell then rang. Bute was a mile ahead on points, so he took a unanimous decision, but the jury will be out on his stamina (and on the standard of refereeing in Canada) for quite a while. Bute had faded alarmingly from the 11th round against Andrade.
Zuniga will know all this and brings strength, aggression, workrate and stamina. The 31-year-old challenger can also whack a bit but was outboxed by Germany's Denis Inkin for the vacant WBO super-middleweight title recently, and Bute is an expert boxer, slippery, controlled and sharp. Zuniga is not dissimilar to that man Berrio, in fact - dangerous but reckless and possibly a little bit past his best. Zuniga looks made for the talented, massively supported Bute.

But who getting the money let hope Dunne is getting well paid for his trouble and what could be his last fight in the big time. Let hope he can still draw big numbers after this.

I don't think Bernard is short of money, I saw him on RTE commentating on the Irish Amateur Championships, he commentates on all of the boxing shown on RTE from pro fights to the Olympics so I'd say he has plenty of money from that, as well as his own fights.
