well it's good that Michael didn't get busted up bad, down twice in rnd 4, though one of those he took a clever knee to get out the way.
The referee did what he was paid to do IMO.
Jennings was up at 6 or 7 , taking full advantage of the count, and clearly had all his faculties together. Why did the ref bother counting to ten in the first place if he wasn't going to let him continue?
I did a kind of round by round on the other thread.
Good stoppage in my eyes, Jennings out of his class. Tried his best but would not commit to his shots - mainly fell short or blocked. Was fighting to keep the stalking Cotto off although his best moment was just before the first knockdown when he got caught with a right and in reply stepped in with right of his own. First real commitment to a shot by Jennings but all Cotto did was step it up half a gear for 10 seconds with a left hook and a few follow ups and had Jennings over.
Basically Cotto fought within himself, Jennings did not embarrass himself but as soon as Cotto accelerated slightly, it was game over.
Its brilliant to see Michael Jennings come out of the fight fit & healthy - but don't you or anyone else kid yourself - that fight was a mismatch.
Cotto was ultra controlled and cautious certainly for the 1st 3 rounds - the moment he opened up Jennings had nothing there to make Cotto think he was in a fight.
I have nothing but admiration for Brian Hughes and the Collyhurst gym - they are fantastic people and even Michael is a good lad - but please lets keep this thread real and honest - yeah its brilliant to see Michael get a very good pay day and its even better to see no damage or anything - but the fight was a mismatch.
Proud of him, such a nice kid.
Gave it his all against someone leagues above any kind of level he's fought at b4.
So glad he didn't get a beating, well done Michael Jennings, fought top of the bill in Madison Square Garden and did himself proud.

Basically as I said then Spud yeah? Cotto took his time, fought within himself but as soon as he moved up half a gear and accelerated marginally, it was game over.

He did his best yes, however we all know the difference between our top domestic class and real world class is a massive gulf. Hatton, Joe etc are the exception, very much the exception and not the rule.
Jennings gave it a go the best way he knew, it just was never going to be enough against a world class beast like Cotto, MJ showed courage to come out for the fifth round after 2 knockdowns, well done to him. There's still fights back here for Jennings and I hope he has enjoyed the experience (obviously hard to do) like he said he wanted in BN.

Wouldn't have a clue mate - my educated guess would be $150,000 possibly a bit less certainly not a lot more!!! - I couldn't see Bob Arum paying much more than that when they could have got an opponent even cheaper!!!

he got up at about 9 1/2. He was on a knee from about 4, but he barely beat the count.

Jennings obviously wouldn't say how much in a recent interview but he said although it was not a huge amount it was his best payday.

Like I have stated above - I reckon $150,000 - thats dollars not pounds!!!
As spud says, topping the bill at MSG is the stuff dreams are made of, sharing the ring with a probably future semi-legend to boot. Wow, great memories to have one day.
A win would have been better but all the same a great experience which most of us would sell our left testicle to have had ourselves.
