well it's good that Michael didn't get busted up bad, down twice in rnd 4, though one of those he took a clever knee to get out the way.

The referee did what he was paid to do IMO.

Jennings was up at 6 or 7 , taking full advantage of the count, and clearly had all his faculties together. Why did the ref bother counting to ten in the first place if he wasn't going to let him continue?

he got up at about 9 1/2. He was on a knee from about 4, but he barely beat the count.

No point in it going on, why see a guy get hurt.

don't get me wrong I'm not advocating taking a 12 round beating....not under these circumstances i.e. when it looks to all the world inevitable.

but you have to draw a line somewhere. Am I going there to try to win the fight?? - cos that's what it is at the end of the day, that's why magazines do previews and people watch the fights, or, am I going there get paid and lose and not get beat up?

I couldn't see Jennings face on my stream when the referee waved it off, the camera was facing Jennings back and the referees face, the same image I suspect you were watching in fact.

All I'm saying is that Jennings wasn't "gone" when it was stopped. Obviously Jennings would have walked him down and stopped him at some point, in fact it's unlikely they'd have let him leave the corner, you can see that cos he was down 3 times before halfway.

I don't underestimate what Jennings did and it's one for the grandkids and a great achievement but yes if you're going to press me I'll be honest and say I would have preferred to see a "shit or bust" attitude. At least for another round. It's already been alluded to in this thread that Jennings never set his feet and really tried to whack the guy, FIND OUT what Cotto can take, FIND OUT how much his last fight affected him.

If you're just going to say stay out the way for as long as you can then look for an exit, then I can throw back at you, and people who make matches....Why lay on a MISMATCH in the first place. It's a fair question.

And in case it looks like a detraction from Jennings' efforts in there you only need to cast your eyes left at my tag to see who I was rooting for.

Spud, out of interest what would you expect Jennings would have taken from that fight financially. It's difficult for fans to get an idea sometimes.

Jennings obviously wouldn't say how much in a recent interview but he said although it was not a huge amount it was his best payday.

Like I have stated above - I reckon $150,000 - thats dollars not pounds!!!

I think that it went as expected- Jennings outclassed but not humiliated. He has gained a lot by hanging on in the 4th and seeing most of the 5th.

I think he might do well off this, too. Hopefully we will see him successful at European level before the end of his career.

There is certainly enough decent opposition too at Welterweight for him to have a good comeback fight. Matthew Hatton for example would be a cracking fight, and very popular in the North West.

like i said a few times now, we knew the score, we knew jennings was quite out of his league, but that does'nt mean you can't root for someone to win. i think some people get mistaken by rooting for someone to win, and actually believing that someone can win, a big difference really.

regard pavlik. yes i did'nt think he looked that good, and i've never thought he looked good. he's a big, strong, hard punching middleweight, but i tell you what, if you put punches in bunches against him he can't deal with it, you can smother him with punches, and he'll get outworked. his defense is also shocking. basically he's a good come forward fighter, but shit on the backfoot with a shit defense.

Jennings went out and gave it his best shot, but was badly out-classed, i think it was a good stoppage he was just going to get hurt in there, at least now he's safe and well. I would like to see him against Brooke for the British, and i think he would stand a good chance of wining.

I did a kind of round by round on the other thread.

Good stoppage in my eyes, Jennings out of his class. Tried his best but would not commit to his shots - mainly fell short or blocked. Was fighting to keep the stalking Cotto off although his best moment was just before the first knockdown when he got caught with a right and in reply stepped in with right of his own. First real commitment to a shot by Jennings but all Cotto did was step it up half a gear for 10 seconds with a left hook and a few follow ups and had Jennings over.

Basically Cotto fought within himself, Jennings did not embarrass himself but as soon as Cotto accelerated slightly, it was game over.

I though Mike did well enough that he can be proud of getting htere but no more - it was clear from the get go that both he and Cotto knew that he did not have the pop in his shots to hurt the Puerto Rican; what was surprising is that he didn't really seem to try. He finds himself in a similar position to Skelton now - found wanting at world level, probably not ready to retire and so stuck with maybe chasing the European belt or being a name opponent for the likes of Kell Brook.

What the fight brought home to me, was the fact that Margarito has an unbelievable ability to take a punch. Jennings was hurt by the first flush left hook he took, and the writing was on the wall after the body shot that followed.

Margarito must have eaten about what, thirty, fourty, fifty of the same shots, without even blinking!

I think after last night the WBO again leave a lot to be desired with their top 10 contenders.

Nothing Jennings ever did could ever have prepared him for this, and it showed.

If big talent Kell Brook doesn't get some good opponents to develop him, the same will happen to him, if he has the misfortune of being ranked to face a good champ. Let's face it, he's FW fighter, he will get a WBO ranking, and the WBO title will either be vacant/held by a poor champion OR he'll have to face a top fighter.

i dont see Hatton beating Cotto at 147 but always fancied his chances at 140 where cotto was very tight at the weight.

That's what I think, the version of Cotto that got hurt by Torres and looked awful against Branco and Malignaggi would have been worn down by Hatton.

I'd love to see Brook v Jennings.

I worry for Brook, being groomed as world class star in making. If he's never fought anyone by the time he gets his inevitable title shot, how will he cope if the top names are still around. Or will it be vacant title, and when eveyrone's pissed off at mismatches, bring over Andre Berto when he's shot. Don't want to be pessimistic, but the way British boxing is structured is fucked up.

Jennings credentials outwweighed the majority of those wthat turn uo in Germany every week for a world title shot.


Yes, he lost and could have continued but remember he had BRIAN HUGHES IN HIS CORNER AND NO WAY WOULD HUGHES HAVE LET HIM OUT FOR THE NEXT ROUND SO WE HAVE TO ACCEPT IT.

Out on your shield? I think they SHOULD personally - but Jennings did nothing wrong in my book - he danced and threw shots to deter COTTO but once he really stepped in with his unches he was hurt everytime - COTTO won as expected.

Jennings did his best and thats it in my book.
