Most one sided defeats of Brits in world title fights
Most one sided defeats of Brits in world title fights
We've seen a couple of really one sided losses by Brits, in world title fights.
Last night Jennings was methodically taken apart by Cotto (vacant WBO welterweight title). Last year Lockett was hammered in 2 or 3 by Pavlik (WBO middleweight title). Last year Woods doing very little vs Tarver...)
What are the most one sided since, say, the 1990s?

You beat me to it. Nicky was down from the first jab, and his head was getting knocked back as though he was being hit with a baseball bat.Coco wrote:Michalawski v Piper

I didn't think Chavez v Holligan was that bad, because Holligan had a couple of decent rounds before the inevitable beatdown.Coco wrote:Tyson v Bruno

How about Mosley v Adrian Stone?
Re: Most one sided defeats of Brits in world title fights
I don't think that this was a beating. Stone just got taken out, I believe in the 3rd or 4th, from a clinical combo from Mosley. Mosley looks like the best around when he does that.Shirow wrote:How about Mosley v Adrian Stone?
Overshadowed for me by the fact he said he took drugs before boxing De la Hoya.

Yup, that was a one-sided brutal beating.Autobarn wrote:You beat me to it. Nicky was down from the first jab, and his head was getting knocked back as though he was being hit with a baseball bat.Coco wrote:Michalawski v Piper

Agreed Stone was doing okay he wasn't getting battered or anything. But as he backed Mosley up to the ropes in the third he smiled at Mosley to which Mosley replied by cracking him with right hook which scrambled his senses and a series of rights finished by a left-uppercut/overhand right combo sent Stone out for the night.NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:I don't think that this was a beating. Ensley Bingham V Winky Wright is a largely forgotten one.
Re: Most one sided defeats of Brits in world title fights
Fernando Vargas v Howard Clarke at Madison Square Garden... Howard got an IBF world rating on the back of beating Jason Papillion in an eight rounder in the depths of the night on an undercard... then found himself boxing for a world title at the Garden... in New York City he could have been completely overwhelmed by just being there, but set out to enjoy the experience and remember it, as well as try his best to win. After taunting Vargas playfully at the weigh-in, Vargas was seriously cross and Howard wandered off, grinning: "Round One to me, I think!" In the fight he kept at a distance well enough for three rounds, then he and Pat Cowdell in his corner thought, we can do this all night, but let's at least have a go a bit - and Vargas put him away. He was down five times, I think. I've always liked Howard. He had more ability than his performances after 1999 showed.

yeah, all Winky's fights in Britain were too easy, Foster Sr, Bingham, Dodson.whicker wrote:Ensley Bingham V Winky Wright is a largely forgotten one.
It's a shame Adrian Dodson was thrown in so early. He was a talented bloke - tipped for big things - and was ruined by that fight. A horrible fight for a prospect as when you fight Winky there is no target to land on. Ppl seem to have forgotten about Dodson completely these days.
Re: Most one sided defeats of Brits in world title fights
I cannot remember his name but some Irish or Scottish guy got blown away in the 1st or 2nd round of a WBO title fight in the 90's and for the life of me I cannot remember who it was. Possible at light welter.

Down three times in 90 seconds (I think) against everyone's favourite ganja-smoking, body-boarding, big-wave-ridin' Mexican hippie surfer stoner southpaw Jose Luis Lopez.teddy007 wrote:banjo wrote:Eamonn Loughran?

I remember Loughran was thought of as the coming man in the welterweight division, but got brutalised. It was live on ITV as well...
Here's one for the thread: Michael Hunter versus Stevie Molitor.

I don't remember it clearly but it was one of the "Most one sided defeats of Brits in world title fights" as i recalled. I think it's probably just the dramatic, clinical finish that stands out most in my mind.black panther wrote:Agreed Stone was doing okay he wasn't getting battered or anything.
