David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
Sorry if I missed it but anyone know anything about this? He was doing well after the defeat to Okine, beating Bami for the British light-welter title and defending it against Morrison. Why did he give it up and has he retired? He'd be a tough match for anyone at domestic and European level. I know he was with Anthony Farnell for a bit who posts on here.
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
Hasn't he had a few problems making 140lbs? That would be my guess.

I suppose. He was always a bit on the small side at welter though - but had some cracking wins at that weight too.
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
Some good wins, but pretty poor performances IMO. He won them fair enough but neither the Morrison or Bami fights brought much excitement.
Whats happening with Morrison?

Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
Morrisons fighting Paul Mcloskey next for the British title. March 13th
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
Is he with Hayemaker now?
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
it said on skysports he vacate the title when injured with the deal being he fought the winner of mcluskey v lines !
think it would have been his second pull out and was in fear of getting stripped from the bbbc.
mcluskey fights morrison now though on a matchroom promotion so i take it barnes is still injured. agree with stujones he seems to have lost that agressive zip he had to his style when he was at welter!

Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
good fiter loads of ability. Hell look good at welter.
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
yeah but surely given the ongoing farce at 147lbs, that is incentive to move up. He has experience over Kell Brook and is a good defensive fighter able to look after himself. That gives him a chance.Dioufy wrote:Hasn't he had a few problems making 140lbs? That would be my guess.
Also with his championship past he shouldn't have to wait too long for a shot I wouldn't have thought.

Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
He was a good prospect but fell to pieces rather alarmingly in the Okine fight. It sort of reminded me of a Michael Gomez style capitulation. He was being touted as quite the prospect before that night to. I think he peaked the night he disposed of James Hare in 6 rounds. It been by and large a steady regression since then. I think the British title level is all that he can hope for now. But with McCloskey, Morrison, Lynes, Daws, Nigel Wright and Bami out there , he has plenty of winnable and very decent domestic match-ups to engage in. Indeed with a few of them he already has. I have to agree with a previous poster though. He was pretty exciting at welter but at the lower weight its been like watching paint dry.
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
He's with Hayemaker now. He got stripped of his belt due to the injuries which meant he couldn't defend it. I went to the Bami fight and it was a great atmosphere and a good performance in my opinion. Problem with him is every time he has someone for the taking he never seems to go in for the kill. I always think he has more potential but he never seems to fulfill it. I know you could say it about a lot of people but it seems if he got his head right he could easily compete at European level. Should be interesting to see what pans out now he is with Hayemaker.
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
Could turn out to be a waste of talent unfortunately. McCloskey will be looking at European next as he is rated highly, if he gets past Morrison of course (which I expect he will) so Barnes could yet get involved in the domestic mix again.
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
agree barnes is a "shudda been" sort of fighter. tons of promise tons of disappointment. theres still time but not so much of that now...
as a lynes fan i was impressed with mccluskey's defeat of my guy. he looked canny, slippery and confident under pressure. he should beat morrison and i hope he'll gain a european belt soon.

When I think of Barnes, I think of Audley Harrison. Got it all potentially, but just something missing from his arsenal.

Ahhhh - a thread about "Smudger"!!!
A brilliant lad who if lived the life that he should do could do whatever he wanted in the sport.
Hard up bringing and one of the most talented boxers to come out of the Army - problem is - he hasn't in my opinion lived the life and the little success he has had went to his head at the wrong time. However what I will say he has had a lot of bad luck on the way to and IMO has at some stages perhaps been guided wrong - just an opinion.
Remember seeing him in the Army boxing gym 9 years ago - and thinking that lad has talent - then a little while later the Army Boxing coach at the time saying to me near my house that "Smudger" had done a runner - then a little while later seeing him make his professional debut at in Manchester on the undercard of Farnell/Takaloo - I thought good luck to the lad he had obviously seen the light - but Smudger was still on the run and made his debut on Sky TV!!!! - on the day he got sent to Army Prison I remember speaking to the lad he was a tadge nervous but I remembered saying to him he had one bright future ahead of him as long as he kept his nose clean.
Smudger as I know him is still young enough to make something of himself - but in my opinion there are still issues and if only someone took the time to look after the lad properly - he could make himself and everyone around him proud and more importantly boxing would be proud.
I sincerely hope Daivd Barnes is given the time and people are patient with him - but at the sametime I hope Smudger realises time is short and he needs to get his finger out of his arse or otherwise he will definitely end up in the never ending list of fighters who we all think of "what could have been".
Come on Smudger - time to prove yourself.

Two words spring to mind when I think about DB....Arrogant Pr*ck. He thinks he is some sort of gangster, un-doubted talent but too fragile to go beyond european level.Spud wrote:Ahhhh - a thread about "Smudger"!!!

Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
I've been on the forum for about half hour this morning and so far you've bandied around rumours that Gavin is a coke-sniffing, trampbeating, ill disciplined dosser who's trainer isn't upto the task, you've claimed Bellew doesn't have the slickness or speed to make it and his power is over-rated, you've said that Jennings did give 100% on Saturday and now you've said that Barnes is an arrogant gangster prick.teddy007 wrote:Not at the momentChambers2 wrote:You got a good word to say about anybody?teddy007 wrote:Two words spring to mind when I think about DB....Arrogant Pr*ck. There's seems to be abit of a negative theme to your posts this moaning
Re: David Barnes - why did he give up the British Title?
