Sums him up, but I do not want to see him fight Malteser again.
Joe should have gone after Tarver to kick his ever loving delusional butt.
Damn, Tarver is so shit!
Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
I think he needed dawsons scalp for his career to be complete.
Dawson beat adamek and tarver, i think he's ready, calzaghe should have beat him then retired, i think he will never be respected by americans because he didn't beat a good young american fighter.
I thought about this a bit, i think dawson is the only fight left for him, it's too bad he retired, never get to see it, it is a fight he could have won.

Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
Isn't Joe kind not fighting someone who isn't 'ready' yet, he also would never dream of fighting a past prime fighter or any none top 10 overmatched type.
Dawson's arguably had a better 18months than Calzaghe by schooling Adamek and Tarver and winning a close 1 over Johnson. But in terms of being a massive draw then no he isn't ready yet sadly

Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
Dawson;s main worry is in the chin department and that's something that Joe wouldn't really threaten.
I think Joe;s skills may be at thier highest having fought a couple of boxers back to back. It's a shame that we won't see how he matches up with Dawson.

Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
I think Dawson's main problem was that he was too ready. His youth, speed and skills would have made him an extremely live and dangerous proposition and at Calzaghe's stage of his career he may not have found the motivation that last time to get "up" for someone like Dawson.
Presumably McIntyre, Jimenez, Pudwill and Salem were all "ready" though when they got their world title tilts?

Totlly agree with that, Calzaghe beat 1 true Prime world calss guy and that was Kessler will in my opinion will become a better fighter than Calzaghe.Eric t wrote:I think he needed dawsons scalp for his career to be complete.

Because, of course, he was really looking to fight Tocker Pudwill in his farewell fight and hand-picked all of those opponents. Try adding a sensible comment rather than just spouting the same old cliches?steve689 wrote:I think Dawson's main problem was that he was too ready. Perhaps we should criticise Dawson for fighting Jamie Hearn?
Far more relevant is how come Pavlik and Cotto have not been criticised for their obvious sub-standard opponents last night?

Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
If Calzaghe really did think Dawson wasn't quite ready yet then he should have fought him. I mean, Calzaghe is in the minority in thinking Chad is not ready to face him.
In my view, Calzaghe probably realised Dawson would represent a tough, tough challenge. Calzaghe, not being the hungriest fighter out there at such a late stage in his career, made the wise choice to retire.
I do not blame Joe one bit for retiring. He's achieved great success & is without doubt one of the best British fighters ever, maybe THE best, that's open to debate!
Calzaghe has retired, Dawson is the future of the LHW division.

I'm annoyed Cotto is happy to go after Clottey/Cintron and avoid Marg/Mosley, and I'm annoyed Pavliks team are steering him to Duddy and away from Abraham and the Wlliams/Wright winnergobbles wrote: Far more relevant is how come Pavlik and Cotto have not been criticised for their obvious sub-standard opponents last night?

Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
Clottey and Cintron both pose at least some threat though. Not to mention Marg is a mute point given the ban and he already beat Mosley.
Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
Both were coming off losses and (I think) the opponents were mandatories.gobbles wrote:Far more relevant is how come Pavlik and Cotto have not been criticised for their obvious sub-standard opponents last night?

Pretty much agree.steve689 wrote:I think Dawson's main problem was that he was too ready. I guess Calzaghe is keen on getting someone like Michael Spinks to come out of retirement
Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
Calzaghe does bring the criticism on himself a bit. But when he says Dawson's not ready, he means Dawson isn't a big name and won't make it a big fight. Not ready to make it big.
I agree, Pudwill, Ashira, McIntyre, Salem, Sobot were all ready. More than ready.

Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
I don't understand, if Dawson "wasn't ready" then why not fight him? Also, I think Dawson would be ready to fight Calzaghe.
Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
I'm trying not to moan anymore about Calzaghe now that he's retired, but he makes it a shit load harder when he comes out with this 'they're not ready' bullshit, he lives in a dream world IMO.
Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
It has been said above. The 'not ready' refers to financial pulling power rather than boxing ability.Dioufy wrote:I don't understand, if Dawson "wasn't ready" then why not fight him? Also, I think Dawson would be ready to fight Calzaghe.
Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
Oh okay, although I will disagree with Joe once again. If the fight took place in America than I reckon it would do good - it has to do better than both Hopkins and the Jones PPVs? By what I have heard, the Jones one did some awful business.Asterix wrote:It has been said above. Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
Calzaghe does have a way of speaking for the opposition. It is usually "so and so isn't ready or so and so isn't good enough" rather than "I don't want to risk it I have to get my own way and prefer big money for easier outings."
Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
Agreed. Dawson has some amazing speed and ability for a guy his size. He would have been a nightmare opponant for Calzaghe. Not the type of guy a 36 year old wants to be taking on.steve689 wrote:I think Dawson's main problem was that he was too ready. Re: calzaghe felt dawson wasn't ready yet
To be fair, I have stopped listening to Calzaghe, and certainly take everything he says with a cup of salt.
"Roy Jones is shot - there's no point in fighting him. What would I gain from being the 3rd man to knock him out?"
And he couldn't even do that.
