Where was Bunce?

Post by bennie »

The largest gathering of British and Commonwealth champions ever seen took place on Friday night at the magnificent City Hall in Cardiff to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the British Boxing Board of Control. Anyone who was anyone was there, and I don't just mean boxers. Mickey Duff, allegedly, John Shepherd, Frank Maloney, Jess Harding, Chris Sanigar, Ian Darke, Ed Robinson, Ray Clarke, John Morris, Claude Abrams, Barry Hugman, Eric Armit, John Jarrett, Nipper Read, John Ingle, John McDonald, Michael Pass, Gareth Jones, Robert Smith, Tommy Gilmour, Paddy Byrne, Simon Euan-Smith, Tony Connolly, Alec Kirby, Mike Shinfield, Enzo Calzaghe, Tommy Miller, Kevin Taylor, Billy Graham, Micky Vann, Nobby Nobbs, Richie Davies, Dai Corp...and so many other movers and shakers.
So where was Big mouth Bunce? Where were his smug BBC peers? It was a revealing indictment into what they really think of boxing and boxers. Only Duke McKenzie had the decency to show (and he came with his brother Clinton).

Who funded the dinner? If it was the Board wouldn't be money better spent on funding MRI scans

Indeed, Richie Woodhall was there. I had a laugh with him about his 'Why can't WE buy it?' question (referring to a potential Audley Harrison-Matt Skelton showdown) which he put to a squirming John Inverdale and taken aback Bunce.

Richie said that as the Beeb were a public service broadcaster, he felt it was the type of thing the Corporation should be doing.

The Board do was invite only. I would have loved to have gone but I was not invited. Why would I not want to go?

A fair comment.

It will be interesting to note what (if any?) money from this 'Sport Relief' event on Saturday goes into boxing also.

I thought sport relief money went to the 3rd world.

I must say, I managed to get a ticket, surely Buncey could get one if I could? Maybe he assumed that you had to be offered a ticket. Who knows.

I believe it is like Comic Relief.

Some to the 3rd world, some domestically.

As you say, like Comic Relief, it is a 50/50 split between foreign causes and domestic causes.

Sounds like a great evening.

Is it so unrealistic to assume that Bunce just couldn't make it? I am sure boxing isn't the only thing in his life.

Yes Mike H was there. Deep in discussion with Tommy Gilmour when I went up for a chat. Seems a nice enough fella.
