MCall vs Lewis 2 question..

Post by Robinson »

hey guys

I just re watched this fight...

What happened to McCall's purse ? did he end up getting paid.
Ratner said on the HBO telecast that they were holding onto it
as they investigate.

What were the findings.

I know McCall was being paid and had a 'job' to do, but sometimes
a fighter is in their for other people and not just himself.

I feel sorry for the man. He chose the drugs and all that, and made
those silly mistakes. But I just find it sad to have to see a man with
such skill and talent unravel like that.

I also found it interesting how good Oliver stood up to those clean shots
Lewis did land when he was not looking or when he was walking away.

I find it interesting how the HBO guys are bagging him a nd saying
how un professional he is...yet a few years prior they spent 12
rounds of McCall-Douglas fantasising about Don Johnson and
did everything but commentate..should their pay check be with held ???

Thanks again guys

Not being a smartass, but Don Johnson? As for McCall, yeah, whatever happened to him during that rematch, only he really knows.

You need to watch the HBO McCall-Douglas fight....

the commentators fantasise about Don Johnson and Melanie
Griffith for most the fight.

On a human level I had sympathy for him, but anyone has to admit the guy was completly UNprofessional . . .lots of people on the lower end of the totem pole work to make fights happen, and to completly bottle it like McCall did, for whatever drug-induced reason, is a pretty crappy thing to do, for the sport and for the people who worked hard to see him succeed.

Agreed.

I think sometimes fighters get pressured into things and fight for
others more than for themselves...sometimes...but $3mil is a good
incentive, or however much of that he actually takes homer after
tax man and everyone else gets their part...so maybe $800k.

In any case I could not feel annoyed or angry at him watching it,
and I feel the same way as Foreman did....

it is all going to be alright."

Their paychecks should always be with held, as far as I'm concerned.

In fact, they should have to pay us for having to listen to their shitty excuses for "commentary".

Who says you have to listen to them? My TV has a "mute" button. Its a great feature when watching fights, and adds alot to my viewing pleasure. :TU: :TU:

Not for me, it deprives me of being able to hear the sound of the punches landing and the crowd cheering.

Besides, why should I have to mute my own TV?? They should just do the friggin' job they're paid to do, and do it right! :box:

Don't know what happend to Oliver's purse although I'm sure it's easy to find out.

Sad night.
It's not funny.
In front of everyone he melted down.

What can you say ?
As long as Oliver found the right path in the end that's all I care about,he had a hell of a chin that kid.

I agree. My reaction was to feel sad and concerned for him.

I think Foreman was the only one who saw it like this on the
night.

Other athletes get away with a lot worse things, and people
feel sympathy or find excuses for them.

I agree with the previous comments. My Dad and I were watching this at the time. McCall was doing just enough not to get knocked out by Lewis it seemed, but otherwise doing nothing to defend himself or initiate some offense. In a recent article Emmanuel Steward was quoted as saying Lewis should have not hesitated in taking advantage of the situation.

I was told that Don King was paid the purse, but he never paid Oliver.....not even to this day. I guess Oliver didn't have the money, sense, or both to file a law suit.

Oliver should have been paid.

That is BS.

I guess that's why we have more people playing other sports.
They get looked after better, and risk less/

McCall also fought a strange lethargic un-interested 'fight' when gifting the crown to Bruno. As I recall he did nothing but look sad and unhappy until he suddenly woke up in the last couple of rounds and nearly knocked Big Frank out.

He's a strange fellow.

quite a year for mills lane back then.
in february he had mccall's bout, then in june it was holyfield-tyson II, and in july he was forced to dq henry akinwande for his clutch-job against lewis. (a year later he had the no-contest hopkins-allen I)

McCall took him million dollar cheque after the Bruno fight down to the ghetto to show it off & promptly got mugged at gun point for it.

Hope he cancelled it!

Oh man, yeah, I was a McCall fan, very disappointed in that Bruno match. :witzend:
