Katsidis based in Thailand?
Katsidis based in Thailand?
Just curious, does anyone know why Smith and Katsidis train in Thailand? Seems a little curious to me but I'm sure there is a reason.

I didn't know they did? Don't you mean the Philippines?Jason77 wrote:Just curious, does anyone know why Smith and Katsidis train in Thailand? Seems a little curious to me but I'm sure there is a reason.

In either case, it must be because there is more sparring and better training in Thailand and/or PI, both boxing-mad countries, than in Australia.

He should be training in the states. Working with someone like Mayweather or Roach. He needs someone who can teach him defence and how to slip punches. At the moment he isnt improving.

In Thailand, boxing is the number two sport, with the number one being muay Thai, a variant of boxing. I don't know about the rank in the Philippines, but suffice to say it's a lot more popular there than in Australia.
It's not Aus-bashing (again), I just answered a question. In Australia, boxing comes behind footie, rugby, cricket, swimming, tennis, even soccer and several more. By pointing out that Katsidis may find more boxing-specific opportunities in countries where there is a passion for the sport, as opposed to one where there is not, is hardly "loving it". It's just the way it is.
Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
I understand boxing is big in Thailand. But I was wondering if it's something more specific - like a specific sparring partner or something? It just seems curious. Surely he would be better off based in the States?
I used to train with Smith way back in the day when he was based on the Gold Coast and was handling November Tschingilia (spelling?). I was having a brief foray in boxing after quitting Thai-boxing and in conversation with Brendon I was talking up Western boxing in Thailand but he didn't rate any Queensbury boxers from Thailand. That was way back in the day but...

Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
There are loads of world class Queensbury rules boxers in Thailand. Muay Thai is more popular, but a lot of muay Thai fighters compete and train in Queenbury rules too. Yes, the States would be better still, but Thailand is cheaper and much easier to get to from Australia. Aside from that, I don't know of any specific people or reasons beyond the above why Katsidis chose that.

This is completely of topic, is anyone aware of the result last night with the Hussein fight?

Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
Wow, it's really not going to plan for him is it.
Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
Thailand has produced 37 World champions, starting with Pone Kingpetch. All have been in the lighter divisions. A month in another country will not hurt Katsidis and could freshen him up for his next fight.Jason77 wrote:Thanks for that clip. Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
I know a lot of people say this but it would IMO mean a complete split from Smith as all the coaches mentioned are very hands on (in the literal sense of a lot of pad routines). I can't really see a Smith/Katsidis split on the horizon. Hopefully something could be worked out with Mayweather or Roach as a defensive coach or coaching advisor, etc, but I really can't see it happening in practice. I mean how does it work: pads with Roach Mondays and Wednesdays, Smith Tuesdays and Thursdays? Would Roach be content to observe and advise Smith? Would get confusing for Michael. I know there's other precedents like Jones Snr and the Mundine camp, etc, so it would be great if something could be worked out. There are just a whole bunch of very practical issues to deal with as well as people's egos.ben k wrote:He should be training in the states. Working with someone like Mayweather or Roach. Yeah but i can't see Katsidis beating Marquez,or the diaz's if he doesn't get rid of Smith.Jason77 wrote:I know a lot of people say this but it would IMO mean a complete split from Smith as all the coaches mentioned are very hands on (in the literal sense of a lot of pad routines). Katsidis is the one who needs to make a decision, will i be a Gatti or do i want to be remembered as great boxer.

Well Smith should realise Mike needs some extra training, Why not let him work with Roach or Mayweather. Smith can still be in camp with him and can still assist and help train. It is selfish on his behalf to not let Mike get the best training possible.

Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
Katsidis will be training in Pattaya in the near future...and there is probably better sparring between 130 and 140 in Australia than in Thailand...
Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
There is a reason why he hadn't returned to OZ for yonks, but at the moment I'm not prepared to tell why.
There's a good chance he'll never land on OZ shores again.

More to do with law - Constabulary are most likely to be prominent in his welcoming party.Asterix wrote:Sounds like there's a conflict for him in Australia.AntonS wrote:There is a reason why he hadn't returned to OZ for yonks, but at the moment I'm not prepared to tell why.

Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
is this to do with previous problems, or something new?
Re: Katsidis based in Thailand?
Yeah thats a fair reason not to enter the ring, hope he bounces back soon.AntonS wrote:Indonesian opponent was Hep B positive and therefore withdrawn by Boxing Authority of NSWHounddog wrote:This is completely of topic, is anyone aware of the result last night with the Hussein fight?

New. At this stage I guess they want to interview him, however, in the event they decide to charge him, it would stuff up his travel outside OZ for a while so it's best to stay clear of it for time being.toppity wrote:is this to do with previous problems, or something new?
