which british boxer do you have the most respect for?

Post by ra2006 »

For me it has to be Jon Thaxton. OK, he might not be world class, but he has a heart the size of iceland and he is not afraid to blemish his record with anyone.

The guy goes into a ring with anyone with the firm belief that he has a punchers chance and he is one of the most genuine person out of it.

Froch for his loyalty. Moore, Jennings, Thaxton for their patience and down to earth manner and Haye for trying to do things differently. Audley for his perseverance in the face of explicit evidence of his failings and a fair few bob in the bank.

Beyond these shores; JMM.

Haye and Froch for the route they have taken to their titles. Clinton Woods would have been a fair shout if it hadn't been for Tarver...

Not currently active but Carl Thompson deserves a mention.

Ryan Rhodes for his perseverance and resurgence. Likewise Ian Napa (for his awesome 'Dapa' nickname too!).

Rendall Munroe for his work ethic.

Not sure I can have so many choices but Moore stands out too - hope he gets his just rewards soon; and Hatton for doing it for Britain on the biggest stage of all.

This probably won't go dow too well, but I've got a lot of time for Matt Skelton. Ok, he is lousy to watch at times, but he's made the best of what he's got, put up a really good performance away from home against Chagaev and appears to carry himself with a fair amount of class outside the ring.

I was thinking that myself. You have to admire somebody that manages to make the most of what they have, particularly at his advanced age.

Got alot of respect for John Simpson, never ducked a challenge, and has come back when people thought he may be finished. He's only 25 as well, seems to have been around for quite a while now.

In the current boxing climate you cannot fault guys who risk blemishes on their records to fight the best and never duck a challenge. Therefore John Simpson and Ian Napa stand out for me.

I have respect for all the fighters who WANT the best out there and are willing to take the small chunk of the pie, pack their suitcase and go seek them.

If Haye & Froch pull off their 2009 schedule abroad then I will be chuffed.

On the flip side, these cretins who talk about earning big cheddar before even signing to go professional, with magzine shoots and diamond watches think they are earning my respect, then they are truly more blind than than their PR manager's.

good point, but after watching boxing and boxers over the last thirty or so
years, I trust my intuition and Rogan isn't the type to make excuses.

Carl Froch a Gentleman?????

i can only assume you know him personally

What about all the slating of a retired legend like calzaghe
and the patter from a few years ago about being britains biggest superstar " bigger than Beckam" im sure he once said

Fair play he had a great fight last one but hes not very respectful to anyone that i can recall

Froch is an arrogant git, I admire the way he wants the big fights and really hope he gets them and does well but how about a bit of humilty Carl?

Calzaghe boasted arrogance as well making wild claims like when he said he'd stop Froch in 3 rounds despite being unable to crack an egg. Didn't he also say he'd be the third person to KO RJJ?

Oh dear Jimglen - I think even Froch himself would struggle to bullshit us into thinking he's a respectful gentleman.
His gob's wider than the Mersey and if I hear "smoke his boots" much more I think I'll throw up.
That's not to say he isn't very talented and a good boxer.

I actually respect the journeymen.
The lads who turn up week after week knowing they won't get a result but knowing they're giving the so called stars of the future a work out.

Look at Harry last night.
He'll probably give me hell for putting him in the journeyman catagory but he's a great example.
Rescued Limond's show at 24 hours notice, his first foray into promoting.
Hope he got a good pay day for his 24 minutes work.

I know some posters will be totally against this, Rhino in particular, who hates boxers who turn up to survive but lose, but what would we do without them ?
