Super Fly division in UK

Post by Chris the fighter »

Should we have one? There are quite a few good little men in this country (well four) Culshaw, Kelly, Robinson and Booth and they are fighting each other. But their is no British super fly division so they are not fighting for a British title. I think it may be a good idea.

No, it's a crazy idea, there are less than 20 boxers below bantam in the UK. Are you suggesting that they should have two titles available to them ? every other fight would be a title fight.

Remember in wrestling when they used to have midget wrestling? Maybe boxing should do that.

Chris, form a healthy and safety aspect that might be a good suggestion, however what John says is ultimately why it will never happen. From Bantam down is an absolute nightmare to try and rank (both world and especially domestically). Alot of the guys in the rankings at the top of this forum at those weights have losing records or are novices.

Incedently, as there is no strawweight (or minimumweight) in the UK, what would have happend if Mickey Cantwell would have beaten Eric Jamilli for the WBO Strawweight title in 1998 - would the BBBoC have sanctioned any defences?

Didnt they sanction Paul Weirs minimum and light flyweight fights? If they did then it surely wouldnt have been a problem.

Oh yeah, good call. Its amazing to think that had Henry Cooper accepted to fight Jimmy Ellis (which was winnable) for the newly founded WBC title he wouldn't have been allowed to defend it in Britain.

How things have changed.

So why don't we have a strawweight division? Surely there must be some people that small who will box.

I remember a few yeard ago when people were thinking of the idea of a super-cruiserweight division.

From a safety aspect, it would be a good idea, considering the advantages that natural heavyweights can have over the Chris Byrd's and James Toney's of this world.

But much like the idea of super flyweight, I just think it would be another silly move in boxing.

The division would take many years to establish itself. (Cruiserweight has been around about 20-odd years and is still in the process of developing!)

Plus, I feel that many natural super-flys would still fight at fly, with it being a more established weight class with more to gain, just in the same way that a super cruiser would rather settle for being a small heavyweight.

And Stujones,

wasn't the potential Cooper-Ellis fight lined up for the WBA title?

I thought I read that, but I could be wrong.

Alex, I think extending the limit to 14 stone is a sort of compromise to the super cruiserweight notion. I personally am against the notion of a 14st Cruiser weight devsion (not against the BBBoC, they had to follow suit). I honestly think its come as a direct reaction to the successes of the likes of Jones, Toney, and Gomez at Heavyweight - its to prevent middles from embarracing the very poor heavies thats out there.

Stujones, I remember hearing that also. Is it a general Cruiserweight limit or is it exclusivly the WBO that are enforcing this?

I agree, I am against the notion also. It's safer, yes, but at the same time, a 14 stone fighter at the moment is technically a heavyweight and I don't see why it should change.

Or perhaps I am just too traditional?

the 4 major belts have already moved the division up from 190-200 and that is in effect. The BBBC have followed suit and the division changes to 14st 4lbs in September...just in time for Haye-Thompson.

No!! For no other reason than the fact that theres already too many weight divisions producing too many champions in too many governing bodies without adding more!

Adam, 14st 4, or 14st? I thought it was 14 stone even.
