McIntyre back with a bang

Former British welterweight champion Kevin McIntyre got the chance to rebound from his crushing first round stoppage at the hands of Kell Brook, by fighting for the first time in front of his hometown Paisley fans at the Lagoon Leisure Centre. Rebound he did, in emphatic fashion with a second round stoppage of the Isle of Wight fighter Jay Morris (10st 4lb).

McIntyre (10st 11lb) set out his stall, in the scheduled eight rounder, right from the opening bell against the imaginatively nicknamed “Isle of Wight Assassin”. A right hook lead to the body from McIntyre hurt Morris early on in the round and had Morris down for an eight count. McIntyre could sense that this was the shot to win the fight and threw more venomous rights with nothing coming back from Morris in return.

Right before the bell yet another right hand lead, this time backed up by a straight left to the body, had Morris down again and referee Sean Russell administered the standing eight count. The second round didn't last long with a right jab from McIntyre followed by a left hook to the body visibly hurting the Isle of Wight boxer. McIntyre sensed the stoppage and moved in, landing a right hook flush to the chin and Morris turned his back, clearly not fancying anymore punishment.

Russell called a halt to proceedings at 53 seconds of the second round.

After the fight McIntyre, who was clearly delighted with the win said “I hope that that this sends a message to the British Boxing Board of Control that I am back in business. I will not be celebrating until the British title is back round my waist”. Performances like that will no doubt throw McIntyre right back into the British title mix, once Kell Brook inevitably gives up the belt to pursue bigger things.

The last time Edinburgh fighter Jason Hastie (9st 5 ½lb) met Crawley's “Rockin” Robin Deakin (9st 6 1/2lb), there was some controversy with Deakin feeling he had been robbed (when he hadn't) of the decision. This time, Hastie made sure Deakin had nothing to complain about, winning all four rounds of an entertaining fight. There was clearly a bit of bad blood between the fighters, as any fighting on the inside was more reminiscent of WWE wrestling than anything else.

Hastie was the quickest to the jab and constantly looked to follow it up with a straight right hand, a couple of which “rocked” Robin early on in the fight. When Hastie chose to box at range he controlled the fight, with everything coming behind his sharp left jab. Although Hastie does not posses one punch knockout power, the sheer number of straight right hands took their toll on Deakin, who looked all out of ideas by the third round.

The fourth and final round saw Deakin offering little in the way of attack and was content simply to survive by staying out of harms way. This was a dominant win for Jason Hastie who had a simple formula of a left jab followed by straight right hands, but it was one that Deakin simply didn't have an answer to.

Paisley local boy Kris Carslaw (11st 4lb) got a great reception from the crowd and he did not disappoint his fans by forcing his opponent Duncan Cottier (11st 13lb) to retire in his corner after the second round of a scheduled four. Switch hitting Carslaw showed his class from the start by landing his jabs with either hand at will. London fighter Cottier looked out of his depth and midway through the first round he seemed to stumble and his legs looked like jelly, despite no apparent blow from Carslaw. It was only Carslaw's confusion at the situation that saved Cottier and gave him the extra time to cover up before receiving a barrage of left and rights to the body.

The second round saw Carslaw picking his punches and leaving Cottier bemused with his switch hitting style. Carslaw was looking for an opening and when he saw one, he made sure to capitalize. A fantastic right uppercut rocked Cottier's head back and saw him back up into the corner. Carslaw knew his opponent was hurt and threw a flurry of punches to Cottier's exposed body and when the stoppage looked inevitable, Carslaw seemed to back off and let his opponent off the hook. Cottier's corner had seen enough however and a bad cut under Cottier's right eye (probably caused by the uppercut) was given as the reason for them pulling their fighter out.

Carslaw, who was a former world champion kickboxer, moves to 6-0 and looks a fighter with real potential.

Edinburgh fighter and a sparring partner of Alex Arthur, Garry McMillan (11st 2lb) took a points decision over four rounds against the durable Alex Spitko (11st 2lb) of Mansfield. Southpaw McMillan landed a big left hand flush on the chin of Spitko within seconds of the opening bell which shook Alex right to his boots. Soon after, a right hand detonated on Spitko's chin and it looked like the Scot might have a short night's work ahead of him.

Spitko, to his credit, wasn't deterred and kept coming forward to put McMillan under pressure for the remainder of the opening round. Spitko came out in the second with a nice right and left hook combination which seemed to stir McMillan into action as he landed a great right jab backed up by a straight left to leave Spitko reeling. McMillan threw his jab with some weight behind them and Spitko did well to stand up to them. After a dominant opening two round, McMillan seemed to tire and was holding on to Spitko whenever the fighters were on the inside, much to the frustration of Spitko's corner. Both fighters tried to land their shots on the inside before being tied up but it was Spitko who did enough to take the round.

The fourth and final round saw McMillan land with the jab before stepping in and holding. It was not pretty to watch but it was effective and in my eyes enough to win the round. Referee Vic Laughlin scored the contest 39-38 to the Edinburgh boxer (I had 39-37) who now moves to 7-1-1 in his pro career.

Youth triumphed over experience when Kris Hughes (9st) of Bellshill, with a pro record of 3-0, outpointed Wolverhampton boxer Delroy Spencer (8st 9lb) who was competing in his 93rd fight, over four rounds. Southpaw Hughes was clearly the better fighter and held the centre of the ring for the entire fight. Hughes was first to jab all evening but left himself wide open to counters from Spencer whenever he moved to throw a left hand. Spencer moved well for the four rounds and proved an elusive target but his lack of aggression saw any chance of winning rounds disappear.

The dominant jab won Hughes every round but there were precious few occasions when he managed to follow it up with anything that gave Spencer anything else to be concerned about.

In attendance at ringside was the super-featherweight Commonwealth champion Ricky Burns who defends his title against Michael Gomez at the Bellahouston Leisure Centre on the 27th of March.

BBN managed to get a word with Burns who looked in great shape. Burns said, “Training is going well and I just wish I was in the ring tonight. I can't wait to get the opportunity to smash Gomez up”. When asked what he felt about Gomez's performance at the press conference (where Gomez got in Burns face and started a bit of a shoving match) he responded, “That guy gives boxers a bad name, he can try and get up in my face in the ring if he wants. Lots of people are coming up to me telling me that they want to see me smash him up and I will stop him”.

Apart from the dire main event it was a good show.

McIntyre looked impressive and seemed really fired up afterwards about going back after the British title. Jason Hastie outclassed Deakin but doesn't seem to have much power, although that may develop a bit in the future.

Kris Carslaw is a good fighter but he really needs to step up in class and away from easy four rounders pretty soon.

i missed the main event , Went in for Kris fight and he had already won , then watched Kevs fight before the lure of the pub was too much for me to hang about.

Good set up though hope for future shows there.
