Fancy calling people who boo him whilst he is making his pro debut over 4 rounds idiots, unbelievable...

You mention him showing disrespect, yet you booed him in his first ever professional fight?

Hope this isn't the start of a new trend. Booing in the British events isn't something that happens all too often; I know they booed Williams-Harrison but frig me it was awful. Booing is commonplace in American shows and if someone hasn't been stretchered out within the first two rounds then they start howling and hissing.

Does seem that way Steve. I'm sure we'll hear "I paid my money, I can do what I like". It's just a shame a guy can't even get through his first pro fight before the boos start. He seems to be in a Audley Harrison situation already where fans can't wait to get on his back

I believe a lot of the booing was coming from Rogan's fans, a natural and normal bit of international rivallry.

Is this for certain whicker?

I would have thought it was because after all the hype he has heaped upon himself and showing a confident (some would say arrogant) nature, people were maybe expecting a scintilating display. When it didn't materialise then the comparisons with Audley Harrison were starting to rise.

not for certain, no. I'm just speculating- Rognas lot were sat to my right, and that is where it sounded like a lot of the booing was coming from.

Watching it live, especially after the other two, it was not the most exciting of performances, but no, I didn't boo.

On another note, did Gavin throw a low blow round about round 3? There was a bit of reaction to that.

I couldn't work out why and what they were booing.

Sounded rather planned to me...I wonder if Degale has f*cked off a certain demographic.

I like the lad. I think his chat is funny.

Met him before the Olympics - went to see him in the ams somewhere - and told him I was from BBN.

"Yeah, but you've got my record wrong, doe..." he said, in his typical yootful London lilt. He's not trying to be funny but I have to smile...maybe I'm getting old, I just find the confidence funny.

i was out saturday night.

pubs where boxing is often shown didn't seem to have it on. Eventually when got in one that was showing boxing they had the NIA bill on.
That seemed an odd choice to me .....x number of olympian novices punching out one-sided debuts or Thaxton's Euro title? I'd have switched on the latter.

unrelatedly:

who was the boxer that got slung out the Games for indecent behaviour and didn't one of them allegedly film it on a mobile fone?

From memory I think it was Saunders, and as the words "indecent behaviour" and french female reporter (along those lines) were involved, I assumed he had lobbed his c*ck out in front of her.

Can anybody on this forum shed definitive light on what allegedly (or more likely, actually took place, given he was sent home)?? Or will it just get swept under and forgotten about - as I'd like to know what sort of thing some people think is decent behaviour before I get excited about their boxing.

Also and sorry it's my neck of the woods and I don't know, does anyone know the latest on the the other Olympian Bradley Saunders' situation regarding the cocaine in the garden incident and consequent police involvement as I've heard nothing in ages.

thisisthenortheast.co.uk

that's the Northern Echo's website. I just looked at it in date order and apart from breaking the news they haven't covered it since. So it could be ongoing or it could have been dropped by plod. If so surely the paper would have become aware of it. So I assume it's still being investigated and as such Saunders would still be ranked etc..

you know how these things are sometimes unless its bad news the papers wont cover it. i just googled him and just comes up with pieces on the arrest and nothing else.
As far as I know he got bailed to reappear at a later date whilst the coppers sort the case.

I believe they found a big stash of gear at the bottom of his garden and both Bradley and his mrs are saying they know nowt about it.

This is only from my increasingly hazy memory though...

Degale seemed really rankled by the booing in the post-fight chat.

Perhaps the boxing public are tired of his exposure already ?

You can have too much of a good thing... and Degale has been in papers, magazines, TV and Radio for months now without throwing a shot.

More exposure for boxing the better i feel, fan of Degale or not.

We are all living in tough times and IMO it might be a bit of jealousy but still not acceptable as we should be getting behind our fighters not trying to bring them down. I notice a lot of people ringside stood up and applauded James at the final bell in response to the boos and although i am not sold on Degale i still want the kid to do well and not fall on his arse and will support him.

If the boos were genuinely directed at deGale personally, rather than just generated by the pro-Irish/anti-English fans (in which case, why didn't they boo the other English boxers too?), then he'll find the road to fan support a very long and difficult one. Boxing fans, once they have made their mids up about someone, can be very hard to budge.

The only time I think booing is justified is if a boxer intentionally fouls and/or is especially unsportsmanlike. For anything else, it's uncalled-for at best and outright disgusting at worst (for example when the unconscious Audley Harrison was booed after being KO'd by Sprott, before we even knew if he was alright).

Rivalry?

Thats like saying Man United and Stockport have a rivalry

I think DeGale as a fighter and a person is Marmite.
Unfortunately, those who don't like him, boo.
I remember the crowd booing Audley on the way to the Ring against Williams in their first fight.

These types of "fans" only ever turn up when high profile fighters are fighting so it's not all bad. I'm not saying you need to know everything about the game to go and watch a few fights, but I can't be near the people who like to go just because they can then be associated with the fight or the sport...fortunately these types tend to go to and watch MMA!

And Degale did beat him rather handily in the Olympics. I'm hoping that was the reason for the booing.
