If you take the boxing related art that Roger has shared here. Put most of it on display in a room full of Hall of Famer's, boxing enthusiasts, collectors, fans, boxer "groupies" (yeah, they exist) . . . I think the result would be a great Exhibition, to say the least.

Thanks for the kind words Rick. Funny, now that I can see,I hope I can keep my focus. You see being blind in one eye made me look inside myself more. For me that's scary, but very rich. Now that I want to see everything in front of me that I couldn't see before,I hope life doesn't become superficial. That's great stuff. Jofre and Medel are always interestung to watch. Too bad there's not more of them on tape. Just a sidelight. I always liked the way Medel wore his hair. Gaspar Oqtega had the same haircut. I tried to have the barber cut my hair like that when I was a kid. Never came out right. Mayba i didn't have any Indian blood in me that's why.

You say you're going to go to Brazil with Monica to do a documentary on Eder Jofre. Your the guy that understands what this guy was like in the ring. He was ,perhaps, the best small fighter who ever lived. He demolished some great fighters. He never had a downward turn like a Duran or a Pep or an Olivares. He came out of retirement to win a Feather Title. You're the guy that can open this guy up to the younger generation of boxing fans who don't know about him.
Poor Joe Medel. He had to come along when Eder was the Champ,or Joe could have held that crown for a while.

I always enjoy watching Jofre, and the same for Jose Medel. In late 1965, I saw Medel outpoint Jesus Pimentel at the Sports Arena. Medel was down once, Pimentel hit the deck twice. It was the first of two times I saw him fight live. The second was three years later, when he lost to Lionel Rose in a non-title fight.kikibalt wrote:Eder Jofre vs Jose Medel I & II

Thanks, Roger. I'll do my best with Jofre, when the time comes. I'll prepare myself long before I meet the man. This is somebody I truly respect. You made clear what he was as a professional boxer, but he would evolve into a political career, as Mayor of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Monica was from the state of Bahia, on the north-east coast, however she lived a year in Sao Paolo. She didn't know Jofre from boxing or was aware of who he was, aside from the Mayor of Sao Paolo. Monica's father had been Mayor of a small town in Bahia, Terra Nova.
As for Medel, you said it all. He came up in the era of Eder Jofre. Your point relating to Duran, Pep & Olivares is also very true. Jofre was just . . . smarter? How else can we see it? We all make choices, seems Eder Jofre made the right ones.

I never had a brother. I was the only son and the oldest child in an Italian family. I was always treated special. My sisters came second. Not that they weren't loved by my parents, but they were girls. Nothing great was ever expected of them. Greatness was not an ambition for an Italian girl. My mother always gave in to me. Sometimes I think Latin women are closer to their boys than to their husbands. The boys are always seen by their mothers as children stiil. Innocent until that girl comes around and steals him from his mother. Lots of stories on that theme.
Last time I heard, Finnegan ain't a Latin name. But Chris Finnegan had a brother. Lucky guy in my opinion. Forget the race card on the brother thing. It doesn't make a difference. I wish I had an older brother. Yeh,older. I'd either want to out do him, or he'd set the groundwork for me. Be a mentor. Be my best pal.
Maybe that's all conjecture. I never had a brother. The Finnegan brothers. The Quarrys. The Zivics. Jake's brother Joey in his corner. Maybe when Kevin passed,Chris lost his cornerman. His best friend. Maybe that's why he passed four months later.
Maybe that's just conjecture. I never had a brother.

Frank . . . I fought the night of Lou's fourth pro fight, at the Olympic. I remember his career was going pretty good until he fought a very awkward Eltifat Telabi. I remember that Talebi was from Eastern Europe and would overwhelm a lot of boxers with his strength, and lots of blows coming in from every angle. Telabi wasn't great, but Lou didn't know how to deal with the guy and dropped a decision. I lost of track of him after that, and seeing his final record is appreciated.
I can picture Lou Blades perfectly . . . Blue trucks, white shoes, stand up style, good jab, stiff straight puncher, not afraid to mix it up. If he had a guy hurt, he'd jump on them and try to end things early.
-Rick Farris
Funny I see you mention Eltefat Telabi, you have an amazing memory! Eltefat was an Iranian who won the Golden Gloves in San Francisco in 1970 along with Ray Lunny III, Jesse Valdez USAF, who later won a sliver in the Olympics, Pete Ranzany, Lloyd Marshall Jr., and Nasser (Nick) Aghi who was Eltefat's cousin. The two cousins were apparently wrestlers at one time and when you described Talebi as awkward you were being polite, strong he was but didn't have much luck in the pros.

Re: Classic American West Coast Boxing

Rick,
I thought you would get a kick out seeing this Referee Magazine from 1967 highlighting one of your boyhood hero's Jerry Quarry and one of mine Nate Collins. Jerry knocked out Al Jones in the third and Nate knocked out Aristeo Chavarin in the first. My father, my brother and I are going to the fights Saturday night in San Jose with Nate, I'll try to pick his brain for some tidbits for our thread.
