Ron Siler?

Post by Zhuge »

Is he staying amateur or turning pro?

He's not listed as a member of the USA team for the World Championships:

It would be nice to see him turn pro. In the amateurs he was competitive with Jose Navarro and Brian Viloria, winning one or two bouts against both of them, and you can see how well they turned out. He is a lot like Navarro, a quick handed and footed boxer with little pop, but is aggressive and good defensively. I'd say he's a notch to be a least a top ten contender, probably not a titilst but would probably do enough to be a challenger for one.

He's getting a bit long in the tooth as a amateur though -- isn't he about 28 years old? He was listed as having a pro debut scheduled a couple of months back, but that never seemed to have materialized (I believe it was originally listed on the Audley Harrison-Robert Wiggins card). One would think he'd be looking to turn pro since he isn't on the U.S. team for the championships.

No, he's only 25, born in 1980.

I have been training Ron and getting him ready for his fight on the 21st of this month. Ron will be 29 next month so we are on the fast track. He finally has all legal issues behind him. We are just waiting on an opponent, hopefully we will have one by the end of the weekend. He has been getting his sparring from Donte Strayhorn who is at the top of his game right now and is obviously bigger than Ron. Ron will be fighting at 115lbs. We had a great week of sparring last week so now it is time to let his body rest and just work on conditioning and keeping him sharp this week. He has had his issues but hopefully he is finally ready to stay on track, if so he is talented enough to have a title shot within three years max.

Gio - please tell "Face" that I wish him the best of luck as a pro. He was an excellent amateur and I always liked him as a person. Make sure he stays out of trouble, please! 8)

Ron's opponent did not get on the plane so unfortunately no debut this weekend. Hopefully he will not let this discourage him too much and will just get focused on the next opportunity.
