Light Heavyweights

Although in recent years I have hardly seen a local show (due to my excessive traveling) I noticed that there is a huge influx of light heavyweights coming up and unbeaten (eve if it is only 1-2 pro fights). Micevic, Staron, Soi, Kerry Foley, Bolling, Hunter Sam, Phil Malley and so on. Would love to hear your opinions on who is for real, who needs work, and who isn't go anything further than domestic level.

I like Foley a lot but am afraid his whiskers won't hold up internationally. Malley beat Sam a few times as amateurs but the little I've seen as pros, Sam looks the hotter prospect. The others I havent really seen.

No, not at all. My name is Michele Prinzi. I have done a bit of matchmaking and agent stuff and am always around boxing as I love it. Tried starting a promotional company a few years back but didn't have the resources or the time in the end! But I travel as I am an engineer! Do a lot of short contract work in weird places. Always keep in touch with my boxing friends. Mainly in Queensland.

sadly i have to agree with you "Foley whiskers"commeent.unfortunate. sadder still is he seems to get tagged easy and early. pity-he does have genuine power.

I've seen Sam and Bolling fight a couple of times, and out of the 2 i think Bolling at this stage.

Kerry Foley I've seen fight a bit, and i like him, he's young, and has good crowd pleasing power.
I agree about the whiskers, some better defensive skills required, but you have to give him an A for heart, i heard someone on this forum say he had a cracked cheek early on in his last fight and came through with a KO win.

Also Sam Bienke, Joel Casey, Shaun Quagliotto, Wade Foley and Eric de Mori. All young up and comeing light heaves. Someone should get them all together for a round robin type thing.

I tell you what you should start looking at if you want to promote. The UK has the Prizefighter format. 8 fighters in a knockout comp in one evening, the winner gets $50,000. The aussie light heavys are ripe for a format like this, with extra incentive is to allow the winner a shot at the aussie title


Thats the type of boxing promotion this country needs to breath new life into the sport.

I think Eric DeMori is fighting another young LH from here in Perth Andrew Green.

Eric challenged him at the last Dawson fightcard here and Green excepted.

Should be a great fight, Both have good power and boxing skills.

I would love to see Foley vs Micevic. I've been in with both Bienke and Bolling and they are both pretty handy prospects. Hunter Sam looks like he is a good one so there would be some good match ups between those.

Only problem with this format is the 3 rounds of boxing or less, while extremely entertaining at times, it doesn't really reflect (3rounds) a championship boxing format.

My appoligies there are currently 38 active Australian L/H, this could turn into a pretty exciting division in Australia in a couple of years.

Yes 3 rounds is to short to see how a fighter will go over 10 or 12 rounds, 4 or even 5 rounds is good. Rember amatures only have 4 rounds to show there stuff. Just bring in on.

Mumtaz the Pakastani Knocked out Travis Staron last night.
He just came off a few upset wins as well.

Well I suppose thats one guy out of the mix. Mumtaz is a very good acid test for these guys. If you've got upside, you pass the test. If not, you'll either be in for a rough night, or get stopped. Foley has dynamic pop which is why he easily KO'ed Mumtaz. He still seems advanced a bit to all the other guys noted.

Would be good to see Micevic on TV. He was a pretty good amateur and very tough, exciting fighter.

I agree that in a year, a 175lb tourney would be great. Have it built so that the two finalists fight for a regional title.

Foley was way too big for Mumtaz. Kashi fights alot of bigger guys but he told me he could make middleweight. With the right preparation Kashi would be a test for anyone but not at lightheavy.

Bolling knocked out Kerry foleys last opponent on friday night.

Yeah Kashi is pretty tall but makes supermiddle comfortably. He says he can make middle but i dont think he has as yet. Bolling is one that has really surprised me as i didn't think he could punch all that hard. I was told he was looking at supermiddle division.

Spoke to Mumtaz today and he said he'll only fight at super middle from now on. I really rate the guy and has shown great improvement since he started training regularly. Told me he was offered a shot at Sherrington in may.
