Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
...fights they officially won, where you agree with the judges' verdict?
For instance, Oscar De La Hoya & Muhammad Ali have admitted they were beaten in fights with Felix Sturm (2004) & Kenny Norton (1976) respectively, but you still hear the occasional argument De La Hoya deserved his decision, & supporters of the Ali-Norton III verdict, while not especially loud, can be found.
I agree both Sturm & Norton won these fights. Can you name any such instances, though?

Richie Woodhall conceded that he should have lost against Glenn Catley.
Re: Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
Didn't Ray Leonard say that he believed Tommy should have got the decision in the rematch?

But do you think, personally, the judges got it right in a fight where the winning fighter feels he lost?
You guys feeling me on that?

Re: Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
I remember, in 1932 (I was about 8 years old), my uncle saying that Jack Sharkey walked across the ring and congratulated Max Schmeling on his win...before the decision was announced declaring Sharkey the winner. My memory could be a little fuzzy, or my uncle could have simply been repeating something he heard and believed to be true. Does anybody know, or has anybody read, anything about this?

Question is, do you think the fighter who believes they lost but got the decision legitimately won?harrygreb wrote:joe louis/joe walcott. i think joe thought he'd lost

I get it. I didn't see my example, though (Woodhall-Catley), so have no opinion on it.
Re: Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
According to some sources on the web, James Toney recently admitted that he lost to Dave Tiberi.

If the thread's premise is simply too difficult for you to figure out (&, apparently, it is, as you listed a fight you've never seen in Louis-Walcott I), & it doesn't interest you, either, we're better off for you quitting.

I think that in certain rare cases (certainly not often) that a guy deserved the decision even if he himself didn't think he won. Maybe the fighter himself isn't very good at judging a fight. Maybe he is being too hard on himself.Goodnight, Irene wrote:Question is, do you think the fighter who believes they lost but got the decision legitimately won?harrygreb wrote:joe louis/joe walcott. i think joe thought he'd lost

Perhaps a fighter is just being humble.
I think you just have judge a fight by what you yourself see.

Agreed, Alp. Some men are harder on themselves than others, but, as you say, it's probably rare. If a fighter believes he lost, he probably did.

I watched this fight again, today, and scored it 143-142 (8-7) for Schmeling.Djanders wrote:I remember, in 1932 (I was about 8 years old), my uncle saying that Jack Sharkey walked across the ring and congratulated Max Schmeling on his win...before the decision was announced declaring Sharkey the winner. You possess the bout in its entirety?

Re: Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
If my memory serves me correctly.
Oscar De La Hoya was quoted as saying something along these lines.
Don't quote me word for word here but I'm about 95% certain as it was said on a follow up HBO show to the Whitaker v De La Hoya bout.
Oscar said something like ... I was the more popular fighter and a close decision would go my way.
He was quoted by some newspaper writer,of course Oscar tried to spin it in the studio in front of Pernell and Jim.
I saw the show and Oscar was quoted but slid off the comment when pushed.
If you ever get to see the footage you will know what I mean.
Jim Lampley hosted,I think it was a half hour deal a week or so after the actual contest.

Re: Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
The quality is poor, but I scored it the best I could (based on what I have available to watch). I certainly don't have a clear enough copy to argue with anyone who thinks Sharkey deserved the win. I wonder if there is a better copy anywhere.Goodnight, Irene wrote:"I watched this fight again, today, and scored it 143-142 (8-7) for Schmeling." - DJ

I like the thread. I think honesty and modesty are qualities we see less and less in our boxers - not to mention good, old fashioned sportsmanship.Goodnight, Irene wrote:What's your problem?harrygreb wrote:well mr irene i would say nearly all fighters know who won. sometimes they cant bring themselves to admit it. i'll admit that this thread is not too interesting to me so i quit.![]()

So good on you, GI, for opening this up.
Re: Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
In 1926 Luis Lombo and Jack Ramos fought in Colombia.
The fight was originally pronounced a draw, but Lombo protested, claiming Ramos had clearly won, resulting in a change of verdict in favor of Ramos and a standing ovation for Lombo.

Re: Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
I don't think Joe ever outwardly admitted that he thought he lost, but his body language and behavior before the decision was announced indicated that he thought he might not get the decision.harrygreb wrote:joe louis/joe walcott. i think joe thought he'd lost
Personally, I don't think either guy did enough to win from what I've seen of the fight, and sportswriters were split on who they thought won, so I suppose that comes somewhat close to fulfilling the thread-starter's intentions.

But if you guys (Enrique & My2) didn't personally see those bouts in full, my intentions can't be fufilled.
Appreciate that, Witherspoon. Thanks

Re: Fighters Who Concede They Lost...
mr irene. i shall bring it to your attention that not all fights are available to be seen. in my case - the walcott/louis bout - it is a fight i have not seen but have read about more than once. these things that i use for getting this information are called books and without them i would not be able to judge around 70% of the fights that i know backwards from over 50 years of indulgence in the practice. sorry to be so sarcastic but your little pop earlier in this thread forced me into it.
...and it doesnt pay to get sensitive about the threads you post. i posted a thread about a month ago in "boxers of the past" which has received absolutely no replies!! am i crying? just shows me that noone knows (or cares) about great unknown battlers like tribuani even on this forum
