Why boos might help De Gale.
Why boos might help De Gale.
The "hostile fans boo gold medalist" seems to have been by far and away the most popular story in the press. Little has been said about Rogan! Most of the papers seem to mention De Gale's fight (at least online,) with the other fights being more of a footnote.
So, as they say any publicity is good publicity- even something negative like this will no doubt generate a bit of interest in De Gale's next fight.

Have to disagree with you on that point. Old addage or not, getting booed wouldn't be my preferred method of operating.whicker wrote:The "hostile fans boo gold medalist" seems to have been by far and away the most popular story in the press. Also worth pointing out (and I don't know about figures or anything) - Amateur boxing is nowadays a career in itself. You can make big cash getting to the pinnacle of the amateur sport - well I don't know if they get it as amateurs or it kicks in with the pro contract.
So I don't think that simply having made big money is a reason to dislike someone.
However, I would like as would most of us, just to see a more humble attitude. Audley Harrison was and still is the ultimate bullsh*t merchant...I wouldn't get off my sofa and go to the window and watch if he was fighting in my back garden. He uses his mouth, and the media, to swell his bank balance, when clearly, he can back up approximately 2 percent of the drivel that comes out of him. He is a chronic repeat offender. He still takes some people in on this forum to my amazement.
So any up and coming new pro's that have had profile in the amateurs I would just like to see get about their business in the ring and leave the big talk to one side.

I dont agree with booing but to me any time ive heard degale he hasnt come across well seems to think he is the best young prospect out there
On the other hand rogan comes acrosse far better and almost seems like a guy that you could meet in a pub and hed have time for a chat and not in a hatton type of "man of the people" bs.
I put a lot of it down to maturity im sure degale dosent intend to come across as cocky.

Just after thinking , could the boos have been from the irish contingent because of degale beating sutherland in china?
Btw I didnt see the fight so dont know when they booed or in what context

Re: Why boos might help De Gale.
Yes, I think they could have- I was at the venue and they seemed to be coming from that direction.metropol wrote:Just after thinking , could the boos have been from the irish contingent because of degale beating sutherland in china?
My main point , though, is slightly different.
The "De Gale Booed" story is the one that got most of the press coverage (from a VERY busy weekend of boxing.) IE De Gale is the man being talked about, if not for the "right" reasons.
So his next fight might get press coverage "the man who was booed" etc, drawing public interest etc- thats my point.

The people who started the booing were the "following" of Billy Joe Saunders, so I'm told. Don't know if it was personal or just for a laugh, but DeGale apparently dropped Saunders in sparring.
Re: Why boos might help De Gale.
True but im always hearing people talking about audley. It may be good exposure in the short term but ultimatley it will be his boxing that will be judged and as an olympic gold medalist there will be big expectations of him.whicker wrote:Yes, I think they could have- I was at the venue and they seemed to be coming from that direction.metropol wrote:Just after thinking , could the boos have been from the irish contingent because of degale beating sutherland in china?

Don't know really. Re: Why boos might help De Gale.
The only girls his attitude is going to impress are the cheap ones who spend most of their time lying around with their legs wide open, most of the girls who I know who have heard of him think he's a flash dick.
Re: Why boos might help De Gale.
The boos were definitely coming from the Irish contingent of fans at the NIA, I had to sit with themgobbles wrote:whicker wrote:Yes, I think they could have- I was at the venue and they seemed to be coming from that direction.metropol wrote:Just after thinking , could the boos have been from the irish contingent because of degale beating sutherland in china?

I agree that the stick Degale is getting is partly due to the fiasco of Harrison's career (I think to a degree this has been true of Khan also). People don't want to hear the big mouth without the evidence to back it up. That is not to devalue his, or indeed Audley's Olympic accomplishment as this is a fantastic achievement, and one the likes of Ali, Leonard and Foreman cite amongst their very best.
However, the general public judge boxers on what they do as pros and I don't think Degale's mouth is helping him.

Re: Why boos might help De Gale.
Totally agree, good post. I dont like booing but I do understand fans who have paid good money to see a fight getting angry in certain circumstances. Danny Williams at 20 stones doing next to nothing, or Audrey Harrison frightened of being hit, or the Mattew Barney fight we saw last week.Matt W wrote:I agree that the stick Degale is getting is partly due to the fiasco of Harrison's career (I think to a degree this has been true of Khan also). Re: Why boos might help De Gale.
The guy came on giving it the big 'un about how he was going to be a showstopper yadda yadda yadda....
Put on the least inspiring performance out of the featured bouts after saying so much. Everyone hates a big mouth who doesn't deliver.
"I'm like marmite, you'll either love me or you'll hate me" he said and then he gets upset when people do hate on him, fighters like Naz and Eubank thrived off the hate, it seems like DeGale will not.

Re: Why boos might help De Gale.
He does fight a lot like Audley. Amateur pawing punches, etc. Also not only that but punching far down to smaller opponent with flapper shots.
