Becoming a ref

Post by Adamj1987 »

i want to apply to be a boxing ref. i know i have to apply in writing to the seceratary of th area council, im from preston in he north west so does that mean i come under the juristiction of the northern area council (secratary is in newcastle) or the western area council (secratary in wales)?

does anyone know if the BBBoC takes on refs at the ages of 21 (22 by the end if im successfull)? it says a mature person is needed im assumeing that means in the way you act not age but could someone clarify?

are there any ref's on here i can talk to for advice?

Hi,
Just spoke with Rob Smith, and yes you can become a ref at that age,
And you will be under the area you register with.

I was about to say the same thing. Hence Matthew Hatton has boxed for the Central Area title, and he's from your neck of the woods.

you need to write about your boxing background when you send the letter off,
former ABA champ and pro Tony Velinor asked me something very similar afew weeks ago, wanted to get back into pro boxing in some way or another, I suggested becoming a ref, gave him details of what to do, low and behold he was at ringside last night, doing his probation ref assement, which means, you sit at ringside, score the bout, give the slips to the oic, after a few shows, you end up in the ring, non scoring ref, then after assesment again, take charge fully of a bout, tho Bob Williams might inform you further, thats about it

checked the EBU site the other night and officials get 700euros for title fights

WBO judges and refs get between $1000-$5000 depending on the total purse of the 2 fighters

im thinking of applying myself but want to make sure i find everything i need to know about the procedures of most governing bodies

Why? you wouldn't work for the World bodies until you became a star referee, if at all you made it, dont think many referees make it to star level

I'd have thought the primary motive for wanting to do this would need to be more than money

This is something that has always fascinated me, not because I have a great interest in becoming a ref - but mainly cause I hear so many different stories about the requirements. I've heard there is a massive waiting list? Is this the case?

I once applied myself and yes at the time there was no position and when one was available there were others already in the waiting like board inspecters etc

I've heard it is like a 70 year waiting list? Is this accurate, I cannot believe it - but I have been told this.

If this is the case, do you think they should give preference to former pro fighters who want to ref, or shouldn't it be an issue?

you have to apply for a judges and timekeepers course, once passed, you do 2 seasons, (depending on the amount of shows you do in that period), in can happen in 1 season, as I done that.. then you apply if you passed to a referees course,
