Calzaghe in Wrexham

Post by Captain Hook »

I'm meeting Joe Calzaghe and interviewing him tomorrow night in Wrexham if there's anything you want me to ask...

Cheers lads and lasses.

Joe, is it true that you charge people 20pounds for a photo with you, when they may have brought along a camera of their own for just that? Or may have paid to travel to America to actually support you? Or bought your book/ DVD , £100 meal to come and watch you speak? As that's what I've heard (back when I used to be one of your big fans.

I don't know mate, not the full circumstances anyway. That is why it's just a question.
There were rumblings a while ago, I think I initially came across it in Letters page of BoxingNews. It's a while ago I started to wonder if I had imagined it, but I don't think so.
There was similar talk about Ricky Hatton I think.
It just seems excessive to me millionaires behaving in this manner to their fans, I would be happy for example to donate 20quid to the NSPCC or Great Ormond Childrens Hospital, Marie Curie cance care etc etc...but not to their bank accounts.
Like I said I am going off something I saw either on Boxrec or in Boxing News in the last couple of years.

Does he look back upon the ten years between Eubank and Lacy with any regret for not taking more risks (fighting abroad and with smaller purses) and going after bigger fights?

would he be tempted out of retirement if Froch beat Taylor.

I don't know if Joe or Ricky charge for pictures at dinner shows, but it does happen with some sports personalities

Why doesn't he keep his trap shut about why every other fighter he hasn't faced, or in some cases, has faced, have big, telling us about their massive flaws, and why they aren't "worthy" of facing him?

And was he drunk when he said he would stop Froch in three rounds?

Also, if he's predicting such an easy night against Froch, and that Dawson isn't ready, then why not make an easy few million?

Is it true that Jo-Emma is currently under a bout of celibacy, and he has to go to Gavin Rees to get his jollies off?

Good stuff Hook. Here's a few:

- if he could fight anybody in history who and why?
- how would a fight between Joe and a prime Jones have gone?
- which of his opponents does he have the greatest amount of respect for?
- can I have my money back from the Manfredo fight? :TU: :box:

Love the article on the kebab shop by the way.

"My shift begins at 7.15pm, when an arrogant, churlish customer ordered chips and demanded a free slither of doner meat as Mehmet was showing me the ropes. He seemed bemused when told he’d have to pay for it."

What was Terry doing in North Wales then? :-? :P

Joe how did Roy Jones go from a shot fighter who you had no interest in as you claimed in your autobiography to a suitable opponent for a major boxing event?

And why did you mock Jones Junior and say "what would I gain from being the 3rd man to knock him out", and then fail to even do that?

And do you feel like a wolly now for saying that?

Was you on crack-cocaine when you said you would slap Froch down in three rounds?

Joe once said to the cameras he believed he was top 5.
To be clear, he didn't mean top 5 at the moment, he meant top 5 ever.
So the question - who does Joe rate as his own personal all time top 5 - he doesn't even have to name himself if he doesn't want, obviously a question like that would set him up to look arrogant if he mentioned himself. So - excluding himself, wherever he fancies himself - who are his top 5 or 6 fighters in the history of the game?

I have never seen Joe charge for photos, that's ridiculous. If it was at the NEC, that must have been one of those autograph and memorabilia fairs where celebs are hired to come along by the organisers, who make their money back by charging punters because it is free to get in. David Haye has done a lot of those, plus some big name Americans. I take it the pictures were being taken by a photographer.

Joe always stops for pics and autographs and to say he charges is ridiculous. He has happily signed posters for me and I got him to do some for a mate too.

Do you really think he stands there with a big pile of notes collecting the money?

I think that was top 5 Brits ever. I have never heard him put himself up with Ali and Robinson.
