Favourite Knockdowns?

Post by Goodnight, Irene »

Seems often when I produce a thread, people just don't read what I'm saying. I don't know why that's the case so regularly --- my threads are generally short, & the premise straight-forward. This one's about your favourite knockdowns.

Please, do not list floorings which resulted in knock-OUTS. Just knockdowns (TKO's are acceptable, however).

One I saw recently, after a long time. Jones Jr. at the close of round two against Thornton. Holy God :P

Tyson with that uppercut against Ribalta in round ten.

Foreman lifting Norton off the canvas a half-second before that third knockdown. It doesn't get half the play Frazier coming off his feet did, but you can see Norton's body lift. Scary.

Good one.

Still shudder when I hear (let alone see) Holmes hitting the deck like a sack of concrete against Shavers...

What about what Arguello did to Rooney with that right hand, late in round two?

Moore vs Durrell, all of the early knockdowns looked horrific, obviously making the come back all the more dramatic.

Mercer being dropped by Holyfield. A knock down that
Holy needed to salvage the win. Mercer's first KD and
only in his young 'prime' years.

I like Ali v Cleveland Williams,
Douglas v Tyson gave us two immortal fall-overs, not just in terms of historical significance but the aesthetic qualities of the motions involved. After Buster landed that UPPERCUT, it seemed like Tyson was in suspended animation while Buster put the rest of the combo together. That one stands up to multiple viewings.
I like how Norman Mailer described Ali keeping his right hand poised but not striking Foreman on the way down* in order not to spoil the perfect symmetry of Foremans graceful descent (or something like that).

*Something Iran Barkley did not have the artistic sense to not do to Tommy Hearns in '88.

I think Jack Dempsey's seventh round knockdown of Gene Tunney has to be included here. It was a knockdown for the ages.
