Benn - Mclellan on channel 4's kotv
they re showing benn - mclellan on channel 4 at 2.10am on friday. Nice.
Re: Benn - Mclellan on channel 4's kotv
the highlights will last about 10 mins max. It's a 30 min show, and they talk about all sorts before showing the 'classic fight'.black panther wrote:they re showing benn - mclellan on channel 4 at 2.10am on friday. Nice.
Just watched this fight again a couple of days ago - classic fight except for the ending. I was never real big on the dark destroyer but his heart and determination in that fight certainly turned me round - a bit
I actually had first bet on a fight in this match, £5 on the G-Man in the 3rd.
Pesonally i doubt whether we will see a fight of this magnitude with two in their prime "world class" fighters in a british ring again unless our boys get the finger out and start stepping up to the plate.

While it was undoubtedly a classic struggle, I'm not sure they should be showing it again, out of respect for both boxers. Benn's best-ever performance will forever be marred by the tragic ending. I was there that night and no sporting occasion I've been to has ever come as close to that. A truly awesome atmosphere and I've never felt so drained just from watching a fight. The noise of the the crowd and how it urged Benn on was amazing and you never knew which way it was going to go.

What, worse than watching a man being bludgeoned into a coma live on national television? I don't know what channels you are watching, but I don't see anything approaching that for unpleasantness.
You are not allowed to deliberately broadcast such things. If the fight was a taped one, I guarantee the broadcast would have been pulled rather than show that.
I for one take no pleasure in watching that fight, for me, the ending mars the contest.

I don't know mate, it's a cliche but the news contains much worse on an hourly basis. At least this was unintentional. I'm pretty sure the fight hasn't been shown since it was aired live because of the outcome.jamesmcdonnell wrote:What, worse than watching a man being bludgeoned into a coma live on national television? I was there too and fortunately set the video. The most electric sporting occasion I've ever been to. The fight is a microcosm of the triumph and tragedy of our sport.
As for seeing gruesome stuff, I watched Fahrenheit 9/11 last night. There is a couple of seconds of hazy, grey footage of a public beheading in Saudi. Truly awful.

yeah, me too
I'll be surprised if they show the whole fights and post fight interviews. Id be interested to watch this again. I havent seen the fight since the night it was broadcast and like most can remember the ferocity of both fighters. and sat there smug in the knowledge id witnessed something unlikely to be seen in a British ring again.knockout artist wrote:Agreed. Only the next day when the papers were full of what had happened post fight and in the following months and years did I begin to question whether it was right that boxing fans, myself included, should gain so much pleasure and enjoyment watching such a spectacle, admiring both fighters for their ability to give and take the severe punishment dished out.
So I'll watch it again this time in the full knowledge of the outcome of the barbarity on show and the repurcussions and wonder. We all know the outcome but we still rate it as one of the greatest fights in a British ring ever despite the fact we know a man was almost bludgeoned to death. Personally I'll be interested in my own reactions to this. Will I still rate it as one of the best fights ive ever seen or will i be repulsed?
Ultimately as boxing fans we enjoy the spectacle of two highly trained and exceptionally fit young men throwing potentially life damaging and certainly health imparing blows at each other and admire their ability to do it well, and as long as everyone walks away safe and well at the time we seldom think twice about what we have really watched and ecnouraged. this for me is one of the contradictions of boxing. its something which cant be explained. why do people want to box and why do people want to watch them? I dont know the answer. But maybe watching this fight again may go someway to working it out at least for me personally.
Good post neil. The sport, like humanity itself, is full of contradictions. The only people who would watch this and NOT think it is a great fight either don't know anything about boxing or are kidding themselves.
This will sound very harsh, but despite the injuries to Gerald McClellan, it was the greatest fight I have ever seen.
Fair play to those who don't want to watch it because they know the outcome - that is quite different.
I can honestly say I don't think I have seen a more exciting boxing match, on tape or live. I get the tape out occasionally. Does that make me a bad man?
I don't think so. Mind you, it is a very rare occasion that I do.

I find Eubank - Watson 2 a lot harder to watch...
The uppercut Eubank throws at the end of the 11th is just sickening. A truely amazing punch to pull out of the bag, but Watson was just GONE as soon as it landed.
Why Watson was allowed to continue into the 12th, god only knows. It was a disgrace really, he was (as we now know) near fatally injured.
The G-Man...hmmmmm.... I have heard so much about his dubious (in fact downright despicible) character that I almost wonder if it wasn't merely devine retribution what happened to him. I find it hard to feel sorry for him now anyway.
For all those animals he tortued and killed, one wonders if it was life equalling the score...

Agree with Loftgroov about Eubank - Watson. I've saw Benn - McClellan a few times since it happened, though I don't bother watching the aftermath as I still remember the scene (unless I'm imagining it), with the camera showing a birds-eye view of McClellan unconscious in his corner. A really, really brutal fight.

Most of what I have read about him, has been from a disgruntled former manager, I wonder how true it all is.Loftgroov wrote:I find Eubank - Watson 2 a lot harder to watch...

I've watched it on video several times now, and I certainly think that the headbutt contributed to it quite heavily.
However, something really wasn't right about Gerald in that fight, and later Manny Stewart claimed that he was told that Gerald had been behaving very strangely in the run-up to the fight and was complaining about something or other.
However, you have to take what the afrodwarf says with a pinch of salt, he does talk an awful lot of bollocks the minute someone points a microphone or pad and pen at him.

there were a lot of rumours flying around the french press about G Man collapsing in the gym or getting KO'd not long before the Benn fight.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I've watched it on video several times now, and I certainly think that the headbutt contributed to it quite heavily.

As for the Watson v Eubank fight 2, its easy in hindsight to say Watsons team should have pulled him out, but they didnt know how bad is injuries were. He was well up in a huge grudge match with 3 minutes to go...... boxing is about risks and in normal circumstances this would be perfectly acceptable.....
I see you're point, but Watson was absolutely GONE... he just staggered, blinking, back to his corner and more or less collapsed on his stall. When the bell went for the 12th...again... you could see he was still completely gone.
Huge grudge match or not ...future big paydays at stake or not... the ringside doctor if nothing else should have intervened looking at the state Watson was in.
I don't soley buy that "with the benefit of hindsight, the fight would have been stopped". To me, it was clearly evident at the time.

I disagree re the butt. As you say, there was something the matter with him before this. We'll never know...jamesmcdonnell wrote:I've watched it on video several times now, and I certainly think that the headbutt contributed to it quite heavily.

I came home in a slightly pissed state, to switch on the TV and find Benn-Eubank on CH5. I couldn't help but watch it all. Then switch to channel 4 and see Benn-McClellan which was in the 2nd or 3rd round. Can't believe that Benn coul be found at the same time, on more than 1 of the terrestrial channels. Anyways, it was like an extended highlights thing, must of shown about 20 mins of the fight, and then they had some interview with Benn, talking about the fight.
