Former Bushey Meads pupil, Liam Shinkwin hopes to build on his victorious professional boxing debut, having outpointed Robin Deakin at the spiritual home of boxing, York Hall, Bethnal Green, in September. He has his second pro fight on the undercard of Ian Napa’s European Bantamweight title fight at the Newham Leisure Centre, Plaistow on Friday 20th March.
Liam recently signed a three-year deal with promoter Frank Maloney. The orthodox Lightweight turned professional after an impressive amateur career which saw him bag a Silver medal in the 2002 Junior Olympics in Chicago, as well as a junior ABA championship. He is the latest in a long line of fighting Shinkwins.
The 23-year-old former barber turned personal trainer’s opponent has yet to be announced, but Liam said, “Whoever is in the opposite corner, I’ll be ready”. Shinkwin intends to shake any ring rust off and go on to greater things. Liam said, “I’ve had a bit of bad luck with injuries and had to pull out of a proposed match earlier in the year. I’ve kept ticking over in the gym with Jason Rowland and I’m raring to go”.
Liam’s Manager, Richard Clark, has “high hopes” for Shinkwin. Clark said: “Liam is a very talented young man, with a sharp boxing brain and big heart. In former British Light welterweight champion Jason Rowland, he has one of the best young trainers in the country, they have gelled perfectly, allied to Maloney’s world-wide promotional reputation, hopefully he will achieve his dream of bringing a Lonsdale belt back to Watford to keep.”
