marvin hagler vs sugar ray leonard again

Post by boxerbob »

watched this fight again for the first time in years and again i have always scored it for leonard , this time i saw it................ 7-5 "115-113"

i can remember scoring the fight 115-114 a while back again for leonard but ive never scored it for hagler , heres my scorecard.......

10-9 leonard
10-9 leonard
10-9 leonard
10-9 leonard..................very close round could have been 10-10
9-10 hagler
10-9 leonard
9-10 hagler
9-10 hagler
9-10 hagler
10-9 leonard
10-9 leonard
9-10 hagler

115-113...........still great fight but i believe if it was 15 rounds hagler would have won the remaining 3 as leonard was spent , i think hagler would have won an immeadiate rematch as he would have went southpaw from round 1 instead of round 3.

Thanks Bob

Ill put my score cards up. Ive always scored it close, but like you
never for Hagler.
I think last time I watched it I had it 115-113 for Leonard.

7-5, 115-113 for Leonard, here.

The one note I'll make with my card is that Leonard should --- not could --- should have lost point(s?) for repeatedly striking after the bell, & low. However, scoring it as an official would, with no deductions, I just never found seven rounds to give the champ.

Leonard made that bumbling, plodding, off balance, head down, foot in the bucket southpaw look like an amatuer. :TU: :box:

Hagler was way over rated........

ringsider - very harsh on hagler , the key in this fight was the first 2 rounds , hagler should have fought southpaw , as mentioned if it went 15 hagler would have won

take nothing away from sugar ray , this fight propelled him from great to all time legend

That is the whole point of my harshness. Hagler thought he could box!!! Hagler could not box, let alone with Leonard, maybe Vito, but not Leonard.......so what does he do, he fights righty and gives away the first 4 rounds trying to box!! He gave away the only advantage he had...his awkward bumbling banger southpaw style.

Boxing skills are not what got Hagler his title.

And I agree that Hagler should have never agreed to a 12 round fight, it should have been 15 rounds.

All championship fights should be 15 rounds. :TU:

THE FIGHT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN IN 1982, LEONARD RETIRED. BUT EVEN LEONARD ADMITED HE COULD NOT HAD BEAT A PRIME HAGLER AND FOR 15 ROUNDS. THEY FOUGHT IN 1987, HAGLER PAST HIS PRIME. THE SAME WITH HEARNS. THAT FIGHT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN 1982. HEARNS. DID NOT WANT TO FIGHT HAGLER. THEY FOUGHT IN 1985. IN BOTH CASES IS A SHAME THERE WAS NOT A REMATCH.

IN MEXICO EN 1987 AND IN THE NEWS PAPERS. EVERYBODY AGREE THE FIGHT LEONARD VS HAGLER WAS FIXED. YOU CAN SEE IT HAGLER NOT AS AGRESSIVE AS HE USUALLY IS. AND WHEN HE PUNCHED LEONARD HE ONLY CONNECTED THE PUNCHES BUT WITHOUT ANY SNAP OR FORCE BEHIND IT. IT WAS A WEIRD FIGHT LEONARD NOT HAVING EVEN A 10 ROUND FIGHT BEFORE CHALLENGED HAGLER.

Some thing I find interesting about Leonard-Hagler is that
Hagler fans always have so many reasons as to why Hagler
lost.

The reality is...it was a big fight. It had imposed a lot of pressure
on both men.

Both did what they thought they needed to win. Hindsight is just
that.

I enjoy this fight and would have been happy with either out come
so long as both men did their best. And they did.

check out the book Sorcery at Ceasars.
i dont really buy the premise but apparently the affects of cocaine abuse played a role in the mind set of both fighters.

Its ok so far. I have put it on the back burner..mostly because so
far I have a sense of de ja vu. It seems to cover the same old
stuff and having just read the Sorcery book it feels ultra un fresh.

Ill read it soon no doubt. Just got the Patterson bio. That is a good
read so far.

Thanks for that Turn2stone.

I have wondered about the Tyson-Douglas book.
Last copy I saw was at Borders and they wanted
near $60 for it.

4 kings will no doubt get good when I hit the
Hearns section, as he seems to have the least
written about him over all.

Its nice to have a book which dedicates some huge
chunk to the Hitman.
