2009 National Golden Gloves
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
Can we get a separate thread started for the Cal GG complaints? This thread is supposed to be about the '09 NGG and the boxers that have won their Franchise Tourney and are advancing to the NGG in Salt Lake City.
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
Just airing out how shitty the NorCal Gloves have been since they left the "City By The Bay"!
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
I think everyone realizes that CA has some issues. Subpoenas, lawsuits, threats, theft, the crap that went on with the San Francisco GG over the last few years, etc. Lots of problems.
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
Now it's coaches egos that are ruining things,it's getting to the point that there's an uneasy tension at these shows,it makes me want to take my boxers to SoCal to compete
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
If the coaches can't grow up, maybe they can sign-up as Master's division boxers and settle their disputes in the ring like real men.415BOXING wrote:Now it's coaches egos that are ruining things,it's getting to the point that there's an uneasy tension at these shows,it makes me want to take my boxers to SoCal to compete

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
The Louisiana Golden Gloves will be held on March 20-23.
The event has now turned into a 3 day event due to last years bouts on Friday and Saturday lasting into the wee hours of the morning. The event has also moved to a bigger venue as last year it was sold out with people still in lines outside of the building.
The event is sponsared by the Rajun' Cajun's Boxing Gym and it will take place at the Lafayette High School. Bouts begin Friday at 6pm, Saturday at 6pm and on Sunday at 2pm.
I will post results from all 3 days, no fighter has turned pro since last year so you can look for some champions to repeat.

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
Texas state GG are currently taking place in Ft.Worth.
Last night defending champions Oscar Cantu and Mercy Manriquez both lost.
Cantu lost to Carlos Alcala from Fort Worth at 112lbs. (Juan Leija did not go to tournament due to injury)
I will look for more results, and will be at the finals tomorrow.

Eric Manriquez and Adam Lopez were in the most competetive match of the finals. George Rincon, Errol Spence, and Robert Sherman stood out in their matches.
Sportsmanship award went to Eric Jennings of Corpus Christi
Southeast Texas (Houston) won the team trophy for the sixth straight year.

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
There are no "regionals" in California GG. Are you talking about a tournament between Central and NorCal to determine the NorCal team to the State tournament?Regionals For California Golden Gloves will be held March 21st
In San Mateo

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
This Isaac Torres guy is a real jerk and has been exposed as a talking pile of cow dung! He goes around bragging about how great he is and he shot off his mouth about how he kicked ass on Adam Lopez and said that he is "real easy" to beat. Anyway, he lost in the 2006 PAL Finals to Adam Lopez and again Wednesday night, he was ""shutout" 5-0 by this Adam Lopez kid from San Antonio. My friend was there and said it was a "mismatch". Isaac needs to keep his trap shut and learn how to fight. Bragging and popping off like that proves he is scared!

Texas 2009 National Golden Gloves
A few comments:
Ybarra and Garcia engaged in a nice match. Ybarra is gaining experience and that seemed to be the difference.
Alcala beat Cantu in semis and carried it thru the finals.
119 could have gone either way but Manriquez responded to everything Lopez did always staying just slightly ahead. When in shape, Manriquez has a wealth of natural abilities and could be top ranked by the end of the year. But if he was ever in shape, he'd probably be at 112...
125 Rodriquez was very strong, but not sure how he beat Mercy in semis, and nobody else had any answers either.
Fowler seemed rusty just back from Ireland, but he's got a diverse style that always seems to keep him front running in matches.
Rincon was very impressive to me, one to keep an eye on.
Spence in my opinion was class of the finals, handling his fight with ease and showing improvement physically and stylistically from previous years.
Good to see Colvin back, I had no idea he would be there.
Sherman is only 18 and along with Spence was in running, IMO, for fighter of tournament (I only went to finals) He has sound style, and has good size/strength. Dual citizen, this is his first run as an American.
Mack was runner up to Baker last year, broke through this year versus an undersized and tired Newton. Mack is very strong, tries to overpower.
Agha won easily, big puncher who can box some as well.

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
Thanks for the report Mike. Spence is a very good boxer. I have seen him a couple of times. He will probably be one of the guys to beat for the 2009 NGG title at 152. I truly see him as a front runner for the title.

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
No prob Dennis.
I think Spence and Fowler should both contend for titles.
Agha and Ybarra are both ready to take that next step and get into semis
Rincon and Sherman will surprise people nationally.
And Eric Manriquez has shown he can beat anybody..

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
Michael Finney is a very good young boxer. It will be interesting to see how he does in his first year of open competition. I wouldn't be too surprised to see him in Salt Lake City in May, but I don't know who his competition will be from the other 3 states at the Regionals.

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves
I agree Dennis Michael is a very good young boxer, his brother is pretty good also - Michael is coming off an injury to his arm that has kept him out a year. He looked good in the states - hopefully he has fully recovered.. 141 in our region will be interesting
Jared Robinson ranked # 3 from South Carolina
Charles Watson ranked #4 from Tn.
Michael Finney - Jr. Olympic Champion
