Fury didn't floor Price

Post by gobbles »

Having read the constant claims by Tyson Fury's camp that David Price was knocked down when they boxed, I thought I would dig out my old Boxing News to read the report of the fight. This is the report from Boxing News on November 10, 2006 of the meeting in the North West Counties finals.
Price too good
Fury tamed by England No. 1 at super-heavy. David Randles reports.

Those few hundred fans who failed to gain entry to a sold-out Wythenshawe Forum on November 3 to see Tyson Fury stop David Price need not despair too much.
It didn't happen.
The talented Jim Egan's super-heavyweight had outlined his plan or he Commonwealth Games gold medallist prior to these North West Counties finals, but the final score of 22-8 Price says it was man against boy.
"Tyson just didn't perform," said Fury's trainer Steve Egan.
"It was the first time he'd fought in Manchester and he froze a little. It took him time to get going, by which point Price was well ahead.
"Tyson is only 18 but wants to learn and will. David won and won well, but Tyson was in a no-lose situation. I'm sure he'd do much better if we put them in again."
Price fired clinical combinations throughout, moving in off his jab and covering when Fury threatened. Other than a solid right in the second that saw him stumble but not receive a count, the Salisbury man was not troubled.
So there we are, no knockdown, no count, one solid punch but apart from that he didn't threaten. Hope that sorts a few things out.

And just to be clear, this is what Fury says now.
“I fought him when I was 17 and had just 10 amateur bouts total,” recalled Fury. “He was a double ABA champ and Commonwealth Gold medallist at the time. I put him down in the second round with an overhand right and it wasn’t even that good a shot. He got up and held on for dear life for the rest of the fight and got it on points."
So his recollection of the fight is way off, he was 18, not 17 and he had had at least 14 bouts (he won the EU junior medal in his 14th a couple of months before).

What was interesting, reading back, was that Fury had written to Boxing News challenging Price to face him in the ABAs, saying he was the best in Britain and that the Olympic place should be on the line. Price took the challenge and also fought him in Fury's home town.

No, they only boxed once. I boxed the bout before there's in the Wythenshaw Forum, an got out an watched this fight...Price won comfortably and there was no knockdowns! Tyson Fury running his mouth as usual, same way he was before the fight, saying what he was going to do to Pricey if he ever got the chance....think he might have learned his lesson but obviously not :-?

Will be interesting if they get to meet in the pro ranks.

Fury is coming across as a tosser whereas Pricey is humble and likeable.

Chris Eubank said James DeGale wouldn't make it as fame and money would ruin him.

Fury may have the same problem, albeit less money. He is in danger of becoming the next Fraudley harrison as his mouth is running away far too much for him. He gives me the impression he believes his own bullshit which could be his own achilles heel. Huis low hands and switch hitting, almost showboating esq is not going to help him.

I don't believe he has the fast hands he makes out, nor the power, he seems a very much an arm puncher and at the mo his conditioning is not that great.

i for one, would love to see him sparked out. And if it's Pryce, then even better. :TU:

One poster said he did.

Well I believe Boxing News. It mentions his best punch and specifically says he didn't take a count. Also Swifty Smith said he wasn't put down on another thread. It's just typical crap put round by Fury. But the sounds of things he got stuffed and just reinvented the fight in his own head.

Well I believe Boxing News as well given how it's backed up by Smith and Bellew as well.
