A question about betting sites

I'm probably being really thick here, but when you deposit into a betting site from your bank account and it appears instantly, how does this instant transfer work exactly? Is it that it just says it's there but in reality it takes a few days to clear?

I should imagine its like making a purchase from a shop with your credit/debit card. The transaction is instant. But that's just a an educated guess.

The money leaves your account right away.

Your online statement or the printed statement from the cash machine might not show the transaction for a day or two.

If there is any issue, like you have gone over your overdraft limit, that is between you and your bank.

Whicker you're talking shit, it comes out ya bank a few days later. I'd imagine the site logs the transactions and send them to the bank each night, then the bank will have to process it. It takes about 2-3 working days I think, they may be able to check the account balance before authorising the transaction though

Not my bank, First Direct. If I have £100 in my account, and deposit £40 in an online betting account, my account balance might still say "£100" but if I was to try to make a payment online through online banking, or draw £10 out the cashpoint , it would say "£60 available."

Or put another way, the bank account knows right away when money is drawn from it.

Its the same with credit cards. If I have £500 of credit and spend £300 on an online transaction, I can check my online card details a minute later and they would say "You have £200 available credit."

I find it is a useful way of checking if a transaction has gone through or not.

That's probably right, but the money doesn't physically go out for a few days, as I've seen with online banking
