For the second time in less than a month Kevin McBride's name has been linked to a high-profile fight, and for the second time in less than a month it isn't going to happen.
A Belfast newspaper reported Tuesday that the Dorchester-domiciled Irish heavyweight champion had ``clinched a deal'' to fight his Russian counterpart Nicolay Valuev in Frankfurt on July 24, and the news was quickly trumpeted about the globe via the Internet. This development came just three weeks after Shelly Finkel pulled the rug out from under McBride and promoter Rich Cappiello with the bait-and-switch that resulted in the Clones Cyclone being replaced by cut-rate opponent Danny Williams against Mike Tyson in Louisville on July 30.
``They never even talked to me,'' Cappiello said of the premature announcement. ``To tell you the truth, we thought about fighting Valuev, and we'd have taken the fight if we thought Kevin was ready for it. But there's no way he could get ready to fight a guy who's (6-foot-11) in two weeks.''
McBride had been sparring with Tyson-dimensioned opponents, but the undefeated (36-0) Valuev is one of the few heavyweights around who actually dwarfs the 6-6 McBride. The world isn't exactly teeming with 7-foot sparring partners.
McBride had been promised $500,000 for Tyson. Cappiello walked away when Finkel tried to cut that to $250,000. Valuev's German promoter Wilfred Sauerland had offered $35,000 for the trip to Frankfurt for what would have been a World Boxing Association ``International'' title bout.
``The way it looks now, Kevin probably won't fight until September,'' said Cappiello, who has been talking to representatives of England's Audley Harrison, the undefeated 2000 Olympic superheavyweight champ, as well as New Yorker Joe DeGuardia, who promotes 21-1 Flushing heavyweight Vinnie Maddalone.

I was thinking the Valuev vs McBride fight was going to happen as a promotional tool for a Tyson vs Valuev fight as Tyson continues another comeback. Tyson is pretty much a circus act now, and Valuev would fit the bill nicely (especially when he can say "I beat the man you ducked").
Looks like that plan has been scuppered.
